whats gonna be awsome is whiplash modifing one of the exo-suits for himself and attacking tony as the crimson dynamo.

@BentonGrey - it was post on twitter by Gray Whitta (writer -Book of Eli/ former PC Gamer editor) so I'm thinking it's going to happen one way or another.

some early reviews trickling in. Mostly positive, but fairly lukewarm, saying it's a little too convoluted (implying it tries to advertise Avengers Coming Soon too much) and not as good as the first.

docdelorean88

See this movie is going to be the big crunch time. Everyone  assumed this would be as good as the first, including me, and why wouldn't we? A reality based superhero movie (made by marvel) that is actually really good! The issue with this one, is the plot needs serious superhero time, so it may not be nearly as successful in execution. But if this is a flop, it could have serious ramifications for the rest of the avengers. We'll see, i'm still really excited!

I'm assuming, until I have real cause to worry otherwise, that this was just a model or prototype.

It's just a callback. It's not even mentioned at all, and it's not a big deal to any character. Just an easter egg for fans. However..., no... I've nothing to say about that.

Well I saw it last night with my gf (NOT a geek or familiar with American comics at all) and my friend (a fellow geek).
We all loved it.
Rock solid performances from everyone... except maybe Gwyneth Paltrow.
My gf said that the movie was "too talky" and i understand where she's coming from.  I think RDJ and Sam Rockwell were doing a bunch of adlib, which worked for me, but probably not for the general audience.
There IS a lot of hype about the upcoming Avengers in the movie, but I was loving it as a fanboy.

Compared to Kick-arse... I'd say it was a lot like the first Iron Man compared to The Dark Knight.
Exciting, well-thought out, very funny, and much better than your average popcorn flick but lacking the "art".

BentonGrey

Bah, who needs art when you've got awesome. :D  I can't WAIT for Friday.  I seriously considered seeing the midnight showing tomorrow, but I've got to teach the next day.

Going by appearances, I'd think it was safe to say it was an unfinished shield at the very least.

I don't know when I'll get to see it, but I hope not too long after release!

Rather funny that every major movie country in the world ins enjoying this movie before it comes out in the States...except Japan.  The power of World Cup is amazing.

I just got back from seeing it, and its a really solid film.

The 2nd act i think could be tightened up and felt like it was about one rewrite away from working as it should, and it could maybe use one additional action scene to break up the middle, but the action set pieces are heads and tails above the first one. All the actors that I thought were going to annoy, didn't, however Sam Rockwell was the weakest one for me. He's a good actor, but something about his take on the character was just felt off.

All in all it lacks some of playfulness of the first one, but improves a lot as far as an action film.

*EDIT Be sure to sit through the credits, they have another "Marvel Universe" setup (like the Nick Fury one from the original) at the end.

Saw it last night:

Spoiler

It was... OK. I don't know. The film was very "talky," that's for sure. And as much as I like the actor and his portrayal of Justin Hammer, I was really sick of Sam Rockwell by the end. It also jumped from scene to scene, plot to plot a little too fast for my taste. The action scenes were awesome, there was quite a bit of comedy, I agree with the decision to give Black Widow an American accent (Scarlett Johassen is a good actor, great to look at, but I would imagine her Russian accent would be like Natasha from Rocky & Bullwinkle), Cheadle is much more charismatic than Terrance Howard, and I think it's funny that Jon Favereau gave himself a bigger part in the film. All in all, a good film... but no Iron Man 1 in my opinion.

Also, and this may just be me and my "Conspiracy Theorist" ways, but I think the end of the film made it so Downey would NOT be in the Avengers film. Go with me on this... a film with a plethora of enormous stars would be very costly. I think, in order to save money, we won't get Tony in the armor, we'll only see the Hulk (alleviating any reason for Ed Norton to be there), Chris Helmsworth is a (relatively) no-name actor, so he won't be paid as much, and I doubt Chris Evans demands a big paycheck despite being a recognizable face.

Of course, you all can read more about my opinions on Tuesday when my official review goes up. You do read my reviews, right?

RTTingle

Caught it for the Thursday midnight flick.

Greatly enjoyed it.  Solid acting by everyone.  Loved how they used Black Widow and it made great sense.  Justin Hammer was over the top and, yeah --- it got tired fast, but I can see what they were going for.  It just goes to show how well Downey does with his character, without making us roll our eyes.

Learning more about the Avengers initiative was nice, even if it means a certain someones role may be downplayed --- but explains the stinger at the end of Hulk in better light and role.  I'm enjoying how the Marvel Universe is being exposed more and more and thankful --- that its not feeling like its shoe horned in.  Its so nice to feel as if there is more to this world and it doesn't have to be hinted at in little wink, wink - nudge, nudge - hint, hint ways.

I like how this movie had the depth and tackled some subjects like the Demon in the Bottle, Responsibility & Role, and Expectations & Trust without bringing the whole film down into a spiral of darkness.  The themes were there and tossed at you like fastballs and not heavy like a hammer on the head.  That is the way it should be for this series.

What did I like most?  The banter 'tween Tony and the Shield field agent.  I love how he gave back just as much as he was given by Tony.  It just showed me how solid the writing for the film was.  Small role, secondary if not a third string character --- but still written for well.  Its showing me Marvel as a whole is taking the idea of bringing their universe to the screen very serious.

Later,

Just got back from the movie. I really liked, probably not as good as the first one though. I liked how much they used Warmachine in the end and overall I liked the big climax better than the first one.
I found it really funny how Favereau had a larger role.

I disagree with the last part of your spoiler.  It's been mentioned that, chronologically, Iron Man II comes before the events of The Incredible Hulk.  Thus, given that Stark walks in at the end of that movie, there is still more to come that would put Stark in the Avengers flick.  This also puts the events of Iron Man II before the events of the forthcoming Thor movie.  I suspect that the Thor movie will have something leading into the Captain America movie.

PLUS!

Spoiler
The scene mere sets up that Stark would not be LEADING The Avengers but would be "a consultant" or "a team member".  This makes sense.  Captain America has always traditionally been seen as the leader of The Avengers.  The only hero that I am not counting on being in The Avengers is The Hulk as played by Norton.

Saw it, enjoyed it. Not as good as the first, but pretty darn good.

Saw it over the weekend as well, and thought it was quite good.  Looking forward to Thor!

Yeah, I don't know how I could live right now not being a nerd. I loved this movie SO much. It was better than the first. I would maybe have liked some of the fight scenes to go on longer and some of the chase scenes to go on shorter, but maybe that's a budget thing. Still, seeing War Machine and Iron Man in action together is one of the best things ever to be on a screen. Black Widow was awesome, and everything SHIELD related was awesome. If anything I would've liked to see more foreshadowing for Avengers.

I have a good feeling about Thor and Captain America. My greatest fear has become dying before Marvel Studios is done making awesome movies.
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

TheMarvell

Saw it earlier this week. It's a good film. A solid sequel. But I don't think it comes close to comparison when it comes to other fantastic sequels like The Dark Knight or X-Men 2. I actually really liked Sam Rockwell. Not sure why several here found him tiresome by the end. He made a great foil to Downey, imo. And I thought Whiplash was awesome. But I felt he needed to be in it more.

Spoiler
My biggest, if only, complaint about the movie is what's already been said: the second act drags. It's not a bad part of the movie though. It just screws up the pacing of the movie. Essentially you have one big chunk of exposition right there in the middle for a long period of time, sandwiched inbetween two awesome, but short, action scenes. If there's one thing that could have fixed this, it's to have at least one more action scene in the middle to break up the talky-ness, or cut back on the talkyness and make the other two big action scenes longer.

Seriously, that last battle was awesomely epic, but it lasts for about as long as the fight with Venom in Spider-Man 3. It's just over way too quickly

And did Whiplash die at the end? It certainly looked like it, but he could have just been knocked out. I'm hoping to see him again in the 3rd film though if he's still alive.

Overall, it's hard to say if I liked it better than the first one or not. Whiplash is certainly a better villain than Iron Monger, but the first film was much better paced. The 75% on Rotten Tomatoes is really accurate if you ask me. Good sequel worth seeing, and that's what matters.

Spoiler
Whiplash activated self destruct devices in his drones and his suit. Unless he can get out of that thing faster than Ironman and Warmachine can fly away I am pretty sure he is dead.

my question is, after the credits rolled by and you finally get to see the tie-in at the end...how do you think that will work in with the new thor movie?

My guess? The Thor film will take place in Asgard, and he will fall to Earth at the end.

Spoiler
That's right. I forgot about his suit self-destructing.

I didn't exactly care for the Thor teaser. Nothing against the character, but he's a very niche character, imo, and not a lot of people outside the comic book crowd knows who he is. A lot of people at the theater, including my gf, thought the teaser was stupid. "a hammer? What's that got to do with Iron Man?" And in a way, I kind of agree. At least in Iron Man 1's teaser, you have a character talking to Tony Stark. In this one, it was pretty much just an ad for the next Marvel movie.

I'm glad they threw it in at the end of the credits though, and not just tacked on randomly like they did in The Incredible Hulk. I'm looking forward to the Thor movie, but the teaser should have been slanted more towards Iron Man 3...unless Thor appears in that movie, which I hope he doesn't.
