I dislike the new He-Man design. It's kind of an ugly costume.

spydermann93

Yeah, I'm not too fond of it all that much, either.

That He-Man costume looks like what NetherRealm Studios would come up with. Isn't He-Man basically just Hercules power wise?

BentonGrey

Ehh, it's not too bad.  I'm curious as to what TUE thinks of this.

the costume sucks and sucks hardcore, as do all of the redesigns for this comic.

as well ast the spoiler that was revealed in the mini series.  wanna guess the big bad of the he-man universe its not skeletor, its not hordak, its not flogg or even horde prime it.....

wait for it.....

Spoiler
its orko, thats right the comic sidekick is actually some demonic god all the other villains are actually scared of and has been working behind the scenes to grab power

daglob

That makes perfect sense to me, considering the way so many modern writers seem to try and de-mythologize heroes to make them "more real" or "more adult". They seem to have no love or respect for the originals and want to "make them better". Either that, or they want to write "The Watchmen" all over again.

I refuse to talk about First Wave; I'll either get depressed or get so mad I start smashing thing.

BentonGrey

Ohh my freaking goodness...that's one of the dumbest things I've ever read.

I think I saw that in a Robot Chicken sketch.

I kinda like the new He-man, but my interest in the Masters of the Universe franchise is pretty low.

It's not a terribly imaginative design. I think brown leather pants would have been a better alternative to the blue ones. They look kind of random. I'm okay with the ponytail, though. Overall, it's a better look than the fur speedo and the squire hairdo.

yeah because doing a cross over with an established popular 30 year old property is sinking to a new low

Tomato

er... he might have been referring to the Orko thing, since that was DC's writing too.

*sees dana open his mouth to respond*

*elbows him in the ribs* Isn't that right dana? We wouldn't want to upset the crazy MOTU fan, would we?

Man, Warner of late has really liked to turn their pint-sized sidekicks into criminal masterminds.

Remember Scrappy Doo at the end of the first Scooby live action film?

Which issue was that?  DC has put out a number of similarly titled He-Man books in the past couple of years.  I recently bought a lot of them at about half-price.  As much as I hate that idea, I'm curious to see how they try and execute the concept.

it was the last issue of the first mini series. it doesnt outright confirm it. but the end throws some major obvious hints

oldmanwinters

Anybody been following this series?  Issue #2 came out this week.  I've been followed the main He-Man DC series for the first 7 issues, but I haven't taken the plunge with the crossover... I might wait for the TPB.

deano_ue

its keeping the same level that has been shown in the mini and its on going, poor to mediocre.

the art is poor, the designs are sloppy verging on pathetic and the dialogue is stilted to the point you can see where the writers have thought that it has to be so dark and edgy to remove any form of the classic series

the pros to the series are that it has established that eterina is some mystical place thought a myth ala shangri la etc, and that john Constantine is seen as the same to the motu based wizards and mystics. and the fact that superman got his arse handed to him by skeletor and he-man, which sorry dc buffs its gonna happen when both are powered by magic

Aw, I certainly understand the fan frustration with the other DC He-Man books.  Even though I was never a big He-Man fan, I was curious to see what DC would try to do with the franchise.  Too bad you haven't enjoyed the crossover; most of the comic review sites have been favorable to the 1st issue, but I guess it's all a matter of taste.  I really do with the dialogue was more reflective of the show and less reflective of contemporary attitudes.  Teela has been almost unbearable.

i wanted to enjoy it, and i have no problem with them darken the aspects of the characters seriously its barbarian vs a warlock with a floating skull for a head so i can see where they are trying, but it just seems to have been done so poorly. you hit the nail on the head teela as a character has been butchered.

as for designs

how do you go from this

Spoiler

to this

Kenn

Well, Aquaman, Green Lantern and Man-at-Arms looked like themselves.   Considering the number of characters in the picture, though, that ain't a good ratio.

Drugs.  Lots of drugs.

On a more serious note, I have no idea how you get from Point A to Point B without some major contempt for the original designs.  The same with the revised He-Man costume; someone said "This is silly, I need to change it" and voila.

The best adaptations, IMO, are those that you can still see the origins, but they've taken what works and emphasized it.  The more recent Thundercat designs come to mind, as does the new TMNT animated series. This?  No.

look up a guy named scott neitlich or as he goes online toyguru. i'm convinced hes the one behind or has given the carte blanche to dc to run wild

seriously he's the brand manager of motu at mattel and the crap he's pulled would make your head spin, from lying to the fans, to fixing numbers to change outcomes of polls, to even creating his own gary sue character that in his version of the mythos is the greatest hero (a time traveler no less)

gg they are great examples another is the 200x version of masters yes a hell of a lot was changed but at least you were able to recognise the characters

Tomato

200x is probably the gold standard for what a MOTU reboot should be, IMHO. I'm not a big Motu fan, but I did genuinely enjoy that show, and it did seem to understand what the best aspects of the property were... whereas I only bothered with the first issue of the DC book, and I found it completely missed the point.

BentonGrey

Man, the 200X show was downright fantastic.  I'd be quite happy ranking it as superior even to the original.  I haven't read this comic series, but yeah, the reboot show is definitely the gold standard.  Heck, I'd say it could easily be held up as a model for any show or property.

A DC book where they completely miss the point of the character(s)?   During the Radium Age?   That's impossible.

*sigh*

If only everyone would drop DC books after the first issue...  At least in an era where completely missing the point of the characters are the books' raison d'etre.
