Spider-Man Poll

Was cruising the web looking at some comic art and I ran across a pic of good ol' Spidey. It was a recent drawing and I noticed his eyes. Spider-Man's eyes have been extra large since McFarlane popularized the look in the late 80's/early 90's. I know the look was really popular in the 90's but I'm no longer a fan.

So what do you think? Should Spidey be depicted with the extra large McFarlane styled eyes or classic Romita Sr/Ditko eyes?

Here's some pics for reference...((CLICK))

"McFarlane" Eyes

"Classic" Eyes

I like the McFarlane-ish look.

I prefer something in between, but of the two I'd take McFarlane eyes.

Forgot to add this question to the poll...

"Why do you like the depiction of Spider-Man's eyes you have chosen?"

I like the classic look because it gives the mask a bit of a sinister look. Combine that with the red/blue and the wise cracking and you have an enigma. He looks menacing but he comes off like a clown.

Just my 2¢.

Me too.  The eyes are freakishly large in that particular reference pic for the 'McFarlane' look.  The classic look is okay, but I would say that the eyes of the mask are so small that they would tend to obstruct vision.

Classic. I hate MacFarlane and I hate big Spider-Man eyes. And I hate the way Ultimate Spider-Man looks. And I hate bananas.
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

Classic. I like a more human-looking Spidey, and the giant eyes (and strange anatomy that usually goes with them) makes him look like some kind of weird alien.

Before his last issue of Spidey, Ditko was altering the size of Spiderman's eyes as away of showing his emotional state. That said, Ditko was about the only one who ever made it look right, so I'm going with Ditko.

Talavar

I like the large, McFarlane eyes, but not everything that tends to go along with them.  In my opinion, if you're wearing a full face mask, you don't want to be suddenly blinded if it shifts half an inch on your face.

The Enigma

McFarlane - just a personal preference based on what I grew up with and aesthetics and stuff. Also a fan of the blackish-blue instead of the bright blue for his costume.
The Enigma skin by Juancho, thanks Jay. Fate skin by Kitt Basher, thanks Kitt. Microhero by Reepicheep, thanks Reep. Fate smiley by Paradox. RIP dude.

Zippo

McFarlane eyes. They're just more buggy in a way. Also, I don't think someone billing themselves as "the friendly neighbourhood spiderman" should look sinister.

John Romita Jr is probably my definitive Spider-Man artist. He draws Spidey with the perfect sized eyes in my opinion.

Like I said I like the eyes in-between the small classic eyes and  really large McFarlane ones. I actually really dislike Spidey when he's drawn with really small eyes, it just doesn't look right to me.

I never liked Todd's rendition of Spidey or his webs. That being said, I do have to give the man credit for really being the first Spider-man artist after Ditko to put his mark on the character - even if I didn't like it.

Before I even saw this post, John Romita Jr was going to be my answer to the question. To me, the McFarlane eyes only work on the black suit. But then I preferred the normal eyes on it, too.

In all honesty everytime I doodle a spiderman mask I always do it with the McFarlain eyes.

Outcast

They both look good to me. But if i had to choose, i think i like McFarlane's style more. :)

This was a much closer call for me than I expected it to be.  Before looking at the pictures, I expected to prefer the classic Spidey look - it's what I remember from my childhood.  But when I clicked on the two samples, my reaction to seeing the classic Spidey eyes was, "Dude.  Spidey is wearing way too much mascara."  Whereas the same thickness of black bordering doesn't look as stark when the whites of his eyes are bigger.

Admittedly, I think it's possible for the large eyes to be overdone.  But I generally feel that the larger eyes help project the image of "your friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man."

now ive always liked romita jr.'s spiderman.i'd take it over all!

Trelau

Spiderman Tas always seemed to me like having the right size of eyes: no so big that they don't take up his all face (so that they can be sclae to give him expression) but bigger than humans eyes so that it still looks cool.
Beside, any spiderman costume with bigs eyes just looks..."ultimate" to me. And yes that's a bad thing.

I like my Spidey with very large eyes.

Large eyes just makes him look more friendly and approachable. Small eyes work better for more sinister, taciturn characters like Black Panther. Funny guys must have large eyes to give the feeling of being funny guys. Plus, I think it just makes the mask look cooler than the smaller eyes.

And maybe I'm under influence of manga.

Edit: Forgot to justify.

marhawkman

weird peeps.... I tend to prefer normal proportions, except on "garish mask"s.  Those need a bit of exaggeration in the features, but not a lot.

Kenn

The large eyes necessitate the white film over the eye-holes to make the disguise work.   I believe Ditko's original intention was to just make the eye-holes holes and they were left white in the same tradition as the Phantom or Batman.

That said, I think my actual preference is the Romita middle ground.

Also what Lightning Man and Kenn-X have been doing lately.

Tawodi Osdi

I would like a large Spider-Man Classic with just a little ice, please.  I just like the old Spidey more than the new and improved Spidey, but I am also an older guy, and I tend to be like that with a lot of things.

chuckles

I'm one of those that grew up during the '70s spidey era, and even though I'm used to the smaller eyes...I prefer the JRJR look.
So I vote for functional.

John Romita Jr has always been my favorite
