The Alan Grant Effect

Howdy guys, I just wanted to put up a post to explain my absence lately.  I have been incredibly busy trying to stay caught up with my classes.  The addition of a third class slowed me down more than I thought it would.  However, that isn't the only reason I haven't been around.  Apparently my computer has contracted some type of virus, and despite my best efforts to fight it, I don't seem to be making headway.  One of the more bizarre effects of this is that I can't seem to access FR from home anymore.  I'm limited to checking it while I'm in my office at work, so if you want to contact me, your best bet for the moment is email.  Just a heads up, and don't worry, I'm not leaving FF or anything.

Whoops, I  meant "Alan" Grant.

The protagonist of Jurassic Park, Dr. Grant has an antipathy with computers, and they seem to break just at a touch or a look from the ill-starred palentologist.  I have a similar relationship with electronics, and I call it my "Alan Grant Effect."

I thought it was an amalgam of Alan Moore and Grant Morrison and you had something pithy to say about modern comic writers being inane, self-important and rather reliant on gratuitous bloody violence. I'm so disappointed.

Alan Grant is also one of the founding writers of 2000AD, making your post extra-confusing.
Well, extra-confusing if you're a Brit who grew up in the 70's....

Good luck with getting your new electromagnetic powers under control, Benton

That's what i was thinking, but I'm not Brit.  Just a fan of older Sci-fi.

There are many ways to fight the virus nowadays, BG.  Good luck!

Sorry to hear that, I was having the same problem last week because of some virus. Hope everything works out.

So...I've got a file on my PC that I can't delete.  It always tells me it is being used by another program, even in safe mode.  My various virus programs don't find anything funky.  Any suggestions?

Just a heads-up ladies and gentlemen, whatever has my computer in its cold black grip isn't letting go.  I'm going to have to reformat.  Now, I've got all my important stuff (and FF is at the very top of the list, of course) backed up with an online backup, but it amounts to around 50 gigs of stuff.  It'll take probably a week or two of constantly downloading backed up files to get back up to speed once I nuke it.  I'll likely still be around, but I probably won't be able to do any FF stuff for a while.

Before you reformat (if I'm not too late):

Have you booted from the Windows disc yet, and gone to the Recovery Console? (a bit of a misnomer in my opinion, as I'd expect a "console" to be a GUI, rather than the command line it dumps you into)

You can try deleting the offending file from that command prompt, as it shouldn't be loaded into memory at all, since you've booted from CD.  You should be able to strip any Hidden or System type of flags off of it as well from there if you need to.
