Basically, someone (the director of the original movie) is trying to reboot the Buffy franchise, minus the series continuity.  They expect a whole series of movies.

I'll be honest... I always loved the supernatural elements, the violence, the cheesy fun... but the dialog often made me cringe. I know there are a lot of Whedon fans (I might be one, I like his comic book work) but his characters would say things out loud that forced me to watch the show in private.

So if it is buffy with better dialog I'll check it out, if not I guess it will just pass me by like most things I'm not too interested in do.

Not a good idea, methinks.
But weren't those people involved in the series anyway? Directors or executive producers or some such? The name is familiar.

Alaric

According to Wikipedia, the Kuzuis were the executive producers of the TV series.

You sometimes wonder what people are thinking... Maybe something like...

"Y'know, a movie I directed a while ago that completely failed to make any money was later redone by the writer, substantially changed, as a phenomenally successful TV series. Obviously, the entire success of the series was due to the way I directed the original film. If I can do that again, without that pesky writer involved, it should be an even bigger success!"

The Kuzuis were executive producers on the TV show because they owned the rights - they didn't actually do anything on the creative side.

This is a really bad idea for a number of reasons: it hasn't been long enough to reboot Buffy and the show & Whedon in general will have a legion of fans - the very people this film would be targeted at - who will be against it rabidly from now until the film is released.

This would be pretty bad even as some sort of prank. I totally agree with Alaric's comment that, whatever the magic ingredient for the show's success relative to the first movie, it really seems like the process here was almost designed to exclude it. "The movie was a flop. The TV show was a hit. Let's start our project by duplicating the creative talent... that was behind the movie."

In addition, the whole "each generation has its own vampire slayer" premise doesn't really work here. For one thing, the last "generation" was just six years ago (not even considering the comic book continuation) and is still on daily in syndication. So, this isn't exactly like rebooting the Teen Wolf franchise. Second, the premise itself is dead at the end of the last season; there isn't one slayer per generation, there are sort of legions of them.

As the article hinted, this really sounds like some Hollywood drone deciding, "Vampire movies are solid coin right now - the Twilight movies will be making money until the vampire 'teenagers' look like they're forty. AND, we have the rights to a well-branded name. Ka-ching!"

Instead of rebooting Buffy, reboot Teen Wolf (semi-joking).  You can't have Vampires without werewolves.

Well, this IS ausiello...the guy who kept reporting Dollhouse was done and dusted, among many other numerous reports that turned out false, and even linked to Lanie Grace's 'final episode' for TSCC. Not entirely the most reliable news source ;)

I also happen to not like Ausiello with a passion, mainly in regards to his misinformed reporting, sly digs at writers and directors in the industry, and general unsavoury manner, so I'm probably biased :D However, it's been reported on Whedonesque that its true, so I'll believe it.

This just seems insulting to Joss, can't the poor guy get a break? First, Firefly, now Dollhouse being moved to slot of death and almost not being renewed...I mean, come on, they waited until the Star Trek creator had died before they tried to reboot the franchise, can't they do the same for him? -_-

Oh, and Angel was on after Buffy ended, so that adds at least another year to the timeline, making it...what, 5 years since the franchise died? (At least on television. Let's not go into the comics/linked novels line of production)

The only quote I've seen from Joss was an "I hope it's cool" said when the news broke to him on the set of "Cabin in the Woods".  Take it as you will.

Seriously though, this does smack of money-grubbing desparation on the part of the Kuzuis.  The fact that they'll "allow" him to work on something that's he's still got a connection with (via the comics) is plain rude.  And I agree, it's not even old enough for a reboot.

Hollywood, yarg.

Yeah, the buffyverse is weird in that it is very open (a slayer is a slayer, it could be anyone, likewise a vampire) but the individual characters are too individualistic to replicate. I would compare it to Star Trek, which I never watch so I might get stuff wrong. A starship captain is a starship captain, but who wants to watch something about Captain Fred after after getting to know Captain Kirk?

You could do Mimi or Fifi the vampire slayer but will that slayer and her friends be any good? Beyond changing the setting a lot (Rosita the vampire slayer vs the barrio vampires) anything else will probably come off as a pale imitation, even if it is pretty good.

I'd actually more willing to watch the adventures of another slayer than a "reimagining" I could go with a slayer in the far future or some historical time.
