But STEAM is lame - you have to be online to use the darn game. GOG is way better.

I have to agree.
As a recent user of GOG to get my old school RPG/Tropico fix, I love them.

While I don't think that Steam is lame, as their pricing and selection and ease of use (of the people i know who use it) are pretty good. I don't like the idea that I have to be online to use a non-online game. Part of it is a crappy internet connection, part of it involves having a machine that is purposely disconnected form the internet, and part of it is just stubborn principle. I realize thats where distribution is heading and that Im gonna go kicking and screaming like the grumpy old man I'm becoming... but still.

Though in fairness, the Steam FF deal was pretty amazing.

Umm, you don't have to be online to use steam at all.
I've happily been playing games on my laptop for months while I was traveling with no Internet connection at all.
When you start steam without being connected you can choose offline mode.
The only problem I had recently was after beating ark ham asylum to near 100% completion (just didn't do the challenges) a games for windows update corrupted my save file when I did go online with it >:(

as for gog, well I just checked it out a few days ago and found the pricing to be a bit much... Games are either free, six bucks or ten bucks.  I'm not going to pay six dollars for a game that's ten years old, when on steam I can get deals like every tomb raider or splinter cell game for ten bucks.

Well to be fair, my single $10 game was actually fun (I'm not knocking their deals, its just your examples... Tomb Raider/Splinter Cell and I have issues that go way back)  :P

A lot of it is just me being old and stubborn when it comes to things I purchase. Offline mode still requires updating the game and setting up the steam client to play in offline mode. I don't want to have to deal with a client of any kind just to play a single player game -- a client (even an easy to use, non-invasive and nice one like Steam) is still DRM in my eyes, and if I pay for something it should be mine to use and do with as I please. But then I also still buy CD's, DVD's, and despise iTunes -- so I am not really the target demographic for all this futuristic online distribution.

Now get off my lawn!!

Steam's prices are often hard to beat and the dual Mac/PC license on a few titles is great. However, for most games, GOG's prices feel okay to me, especially since there are frequent rebates. Moreover, there's no e-store app needed and – this is key – no DRM – basically, you purchase the game instead of licensing it. As consumers, we'd all benefit if a DRM-free business model were shown to be viable, so I'm voting with my dollars. ;)

ok, i get the point you guys are making about gog being drm free.  if you buy a game on gog can you download it as many times as you want?
thats one of my favorite features of steam,  especially for games with games saves in the cloud, like torchlight,  i've got it on my pc, laptop...and even at my old job's work pc *shh!*

actually,  just checking out gog.com i saw beneath a steel sky and psychonauts...but no Full Throttle :(
which got me to thinking and reminded me about the new Back to The Future games coming out soon from Telltale.

Yeah its just like steam that way. It sits on your "shelf" and you can re-download whenever...

I'm really tempted by the BTTF game.
And I have the old CD installer of full throttle in my closet somewhere.... Hmmmm....
Sons of Anarchy season finale or Full Throttle disc hunt?

Actually, better than Steam because you can save the install file to a disk or whatever and reinstall it even of Gog goes under or withdraws the game or something.
I am the cat that walks by himself, all ways are alike to me.

Well you can backup all of your games from steam too,  into self installing files...as long as theyre played within steam.
So even if the steam servers are down for good,  if you have your games backed up, you'll still be able to play anytime.
