Actually, quite a few different cultures celebrated on that day independently based solely on the associated astronomical phenomenon.

It's kind of debatable which one first inspired the competing Christmas celebration, although Roman is likely.

Whatever the reason for the date may be, I still wish you all a Merry Christmas!
