Just went to my local FLGS for Free Comic Book Day today and to see what's out in general

If you're reading this today, Saturday May 2nd, 2026, go out and get your free books. There's at least 30 or so to choose from.

Its a little different this year - from what I read, FCBD is sponsored by Diamond that was bought by Universal. Marvel, owned by Disney, didn't want to be a part that of that, so Penguin publishers started a second "Comic Giveaway Day" - on the same day as FCBD, so in a way you may get more choices.

My store limited you to 5 comics I picked up;

Garfield and World of Archie - I've always liked comedy books as a change of pace to the heroes.

Titan Comics "Conan - Tides of the Tyrant King".

Vault Comics - Dungeon Crawler Carl - I loved the book series, waiting for the next to come out(next one is due out 5/12/2026 - yay!), and there's a TV series announced on Peacock for sometime in the future.

Darkhorse - Masters of the Universe featuring Dungeons and Dragons - I was hoping for a crossover story with the animated series, but it was a split book instead - the DnD story looks like its set in the World of Greyhawk and features the mage Mordenkainen.

There was supposed to be a Conan book by Ablaze called "the Cimmerian - Pool of the Black One" but it wasn't there and no info on it.

In general - wow, prices. I didn't see prices on the DC covers, but some of the other were holding at $5.00 USD. There's a Spider-man / Superman team-up series going for $8.00, and a good looking remake of the classic Savage Sword of Conan, in full color of the older stories and nice and shiny, but about $20.00 USD. A lot thinner than the original as well.

I picked up my 5 free books and kept my wallet in my pocket. It was good to get out to the store and see what was going on though. Most of the people were older, around 40 plus or so it looked like, and very few kids.
