need alpha channel tutorial

Looking for an alpha channel tutorial. I use Paint shop pro 7 (oldie but goodie) I actually did edit  the male alpha skin for Power man that I found. The alpha channel wasn't working. but i tried it with the new Space Ghost KX and failed miserably. The channel seem right, but doesn't work. I forget what I did to the other one. Something about saving a copy of the base cape skin as a layer?  can't find any tutorial on it here. Most links are old and do not work, either, or lead to dead pages. Any help would e appreciated. IT has been quite a while and my mind is not as sharp as it used to be. 61 years old now. lol

I took a quick look and didn't see anything, but it was only a quick look. I know there has been at least one Alpha-Channel tutorial, but I can't remember who did it.
