What plays better with mods and the like, the GOG or Steam versions of FF2?

I don't believe there is any difference.  Both will require some tweaking of the shorcut and possibly install directories of mods since their install paths are slightly different from both the disk version and each other, but nothing that you couldn't handle pretty easily.

Thanks for the response, Cat.  I'm looking to get FF for my nephew for Christmas, so I want to provide him with a version that will be as straight-forward as possible.  Heaven knows he won't have anyone with even a slight degree of tech savvy to help him if he runs into trouble.

What's strange is that I have the Steam version for my netbook (windows 7) and it works perfectly well.  The mod tools such as FFEdit and the Character Tool 2 work perfectly well and mods have no issue running.

The strange part is that on my last laptop (also Windows 7), I don't recall the tools working so well.  I think it is because I initially installed FFvtTR through my disc first and then the steam version afterwards, but on my netbook, I have only installed the steam version.  I guess the tools register to the first installation of the game, unless you modify your registry.

I have never used the GoG version of FFvtTR, so I don't have an opinion for that particular version.

This is a total guess, but I would expect the GOG version to work more like the CD installed version. No special steps to ensure it doesn't phone home, no clunky client interface, no random re-installs of the game because Steam has decided that the already-installed version isn't up-to-date (even though there have been no updates to the game itself in years), etc.

That's totally an expectation based on NWN. It's possible that GOG's FFvT3R has issues, but I would expect it to be better than Steam, both in terms of the above annoyances and in terms of installing mods.

Probably too late now but I got mine from gamers gate about six months ago. Directory is a little different but it works as good as my retail version did when I had it several years ago. Best $4 I've spent in a long time.
