QuoteThe Science Channel is kicking off an all-day Firefly event to lead up to the premiere of Firefly: Browncoats Unite tonight. A Firefly full series marathon kicks off starting at 7 AM ET.

After the Firefly marathon, Firefly: Browncoats Unite will air on November 11 at 10 PM ET. In the special, the Science Channel reunites Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion and the entire renegade crew of the Serenity. Serenity crewmembers participating include Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres and Jewel Staite; along with executive producer Tim Minear and executive story editor Jose Molina.

Is it weird to anyone else that the Science channel shows Firefly?  I mean, as sci-fi shows go, it wasn't one that really emphasized the science.

Maybe it didn't emphasize it, but with the exception of River's powers, it stuck with very scientifically plausible things.  No FTL travel (the whole series is one gigantic solar system) and most of the technology show except for some of the spaceship stuff already exists or is under development.  It's one of the most realistic sci fi shows out there.

One of the most realistic sci-fi shows out there, with the exception of the giant system full of planets capable of supporting life.  That's a pretty big exception.  It's basically the same narrative shortcut as FTL travel.  Where most sci-fi says "let's make spaceships go unimaginably fast," Firefly just changed it by saying: "let's make space really small."  I think my favourite sci-fi workaround for the vastness of space and relativity is Futurama's, where scientists just raised the speed of light.

Also, that most of the technology demonstrated in a show set hundreds of years in the future already exists strikes me as decidedly unrealistic.

It's stated that almost none of those planets were capable of supporting life.  They terraformed them.  It's actually a handful of planets and a bunch of moons.  The terriforming is the biggest handwave, of course.

Sure, but still dozens of planets/moons that were capable of being terraformed.  Our solar system might have 2.  To have enough planets & moons within the potentially habitable distance from a star, the Firefly system would have to be something extremely unlikely.  This isn't bashing or anything - I think Firefly was a pretty great show - but not really any more realistic than most, despite the absence of FTL.

Ok, so I was a late-comer to this show. I was sick for three days with the flu and watched the entire season and Serenity. I instantly fell in love and was very disappointed to finish it. But... what is Browncoats Unite?
I am not, nor have I ever been a Rude Naked Hero!

I was wondering that myself. Is it a new movie, or just a cast get-together?

Tomato

I assume a get together. none of them have the time to be doing firefly stuffage for realzies (Avengers, Castle, etc.)

Yeah, it was a cast and crew get together, minus Whedon, who presumably too busy with Marvel stuff these days to make it.
