According to a few reports such as the one below, it's a possibility!

QuoteIn a press junket interview with CraveOnline, Marvel Sudios’ President of Production Kevin Feige revealed some news about The Guardians Of The Galaxy. Apparently, the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie will feature the modern version of the team, which includes Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon.

CraveOnline quotes Feige as saying, “We are very excited about bringing things like that, maybe things exactly like that, to the screen. [...] When you tell people, you know what would be really cool? This movie, and there’s a raccoon, and there’s a tree… And they go, ‘What?’ And people like you know what it is, and get excited. And the majority of people go, ‘Did you say a raccoon and a tree?’ ‘Oh yeah, they’re going to steal the whole movie. They’re hilarious.’ ‘Okay, I’ll believe it when I see it.’ I like that.”

Feige wouldn’t reveal a start date for The Guardians Of The Galaxy, but he did include in as one of the non-sequel priorities along with Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, and The Inhumans.

I'm probably going against all of my instincts as a nerd and as a fan of comics in general... but I will actually be disappointed in Marvel if this movie happens. Don't get me wrong, I have no hate for the Guardians or anything, but really!?! Guardians of the Galaxy!?! Of all the hundreds of characters, ideas, and properties you have to work with, what puts Guardians of the Galaxy on the top of the list? Because it has a tree and a raccoon in it!?! Because a few people heard that and went "WTF!?!" and wanted to hear more?

I'm sorry guys, but let's be honest here... that is quite possibly among the dumbest reasons to make a movie I have ever heard. If there was suddenly a successful comic series about the guardians or if Marvel suddenly based an event around them to get them more public attention... I'd almost buy it. But because it has a Raccoon and a Tree? No. You sir, fail at accepting reality.

I'd rather watch a movie featuring the original Guardians of the Galaxy. They at least have a history.

The Guardians of the Galaxy was a great book, but it seems like a really weird choice for a movie.  Obscure, potentially difficult to realize on film characters with lots of important back story (what's Drax without Thanos, for instance) just don't scream blockbuster - and the outer space nature of the characters seem to require a large budget.

Cyber, the current... well... the last incarnation of the team had history as well. I'm assuming you mean the original team had more of one?

Well, with all the space stuff swirling around with Thor and Avengers, they "could" be crafting an opening. If the film is an animation though, they'd have an easier go at it. I'm excited that Marvel is opening up and giving their lesser known properties some love. I wish companies would do that more often (in a beneficial way, I mean).

Except they're not planning blockbuster here.

Maybe you missed it before, but they have said that they are planning on 2 tiers of Marvel movies, essentially.  You have the big blockbuster movies, such as the Avengers and their lead up--all the movies so far basically, and then they are also planning smaller budget films with the lesser known characters.   Antman, Dr. Stranger, and the others mentioned in the article have previously been mentioned as being in the second category.  In other words, any Guardians of the Galaxy film will not be expected to make as much money as Captain America or Iron Man.  There is also the rumored possibility that it could be a Disney animated movie.

If it was animated, then sure, but live action is another story.  I said: "the outer space nature of the characters seem to require a large budget."  Unless the film is the Guardians of the Galaxy sitting around discussing why they were the next Marvel characters to get a movie, I don't see how it could be done more cheaply than Captain America, a film with mostly practical FX work and no big budget actors.  Rocket Raccoon & Groot are FX the whole time, probably CGI, which still isn't cheap.  They have to fight something cosmic, and any of the choices there would require lots of extras, more FX, or both.  Those two factors alone probably make a live action film as expensive as Captain America, a film which itself was cheaper to make than Thor, with its extensive CGI and handful of bigger name actors.

Two tiers of Marvel movies makes perfect sense for the company, but the Guardians of the Galaxy (unless done in animation) just doesn't work in that second tier.

So based upon what's been said here in this thread, we have two options for what this movie is supposed to be: Either it's a live action CGI fest that will inevitably have to outspend Thor to be believable (one that will inevitably tank, because the GotG do not have enough of an existing fan base to support a live action film), or it's going to be a Disney animated movie that was chosen, again, because  "This movie, and there's a raccoon, and there's a tree..."

Dr Strange? Sure, great power set and generally a great set of visuals for a movie. Ant Man? Yeah he's lower tier, but it won't cost that much to make and the fact that he's an Avengers founder at least allows Marvel to sell him. Inhumans? Ehhh... I don't think much of them generally, but I could see how it'd work if they do it right and if they do it as a good movie as opposed to a blockbuster movie.

However, I can just see Guardians of the Galaxy marketed as a cutsie wootsie Disney film, and that's not something that appeals to me, on any level whatsoever. I'd rather see something akin to Young Avengers/New Warriors(AKA a teenage/sidekick hero movie), Black Panther (A. because an african jungle setting is visually different than 90% of existing superhero films and B. because BP is awesome), or, hell, even a SHIELD movie (secret agents in a world of superpowered individuals? I could get into that.)

That's not to say there isn't a place for Galaxy roaming superheroes... not at all. There are fewer marketable space adventurers in Marvel compared to DC, and the GotG is probably one of the most notable. The problem is that Marvel doesn't seem to be pushing for a space adventure type story... it's pushing for the "WTF" factor of A TREE AND A RACCOON CHARACTER IN A SPACE MOVIE.

Haha......well, yeah, it seems that a live action version of these characters would have something of a stiff climb to be successful.  I'd be mildly interested, though I'd honestly more a bit more interested if it were the original crew.  I don't have much experience with either, but I really enjoyed what little I've read of the original bunch, plus I really enjoy the slightly more original take of a band of humans from various colonies within our solar system, something like the underrated Starcom.

I think most sci-fi tends to go the 'galaxy full of aliens' route, which is awesome, but something different is neat too.

Yeah, not much love here for the most recent incarnation of the team.  I much prefer some form of the original (they have a few different directions they could go with it).  Not really sure I'd be going to see this one, regardless of whether it ends up being live-action or animated.  I *might* rent it, but it won't be high on my list.  And I think Tomato hit the nail on the head, they seem to be hinging this one on being able to sell it based on it being weird.

Hey, I thought the most recent version of this team made a great comic, and I'm much more interested in a movie about it than the original version of the team; I just don't think it's very viable.
