Okay.........I just watched the trailer, and there are actually several bright spots in here, but there are still many, many dark stains.

Red ninjas: Yay!
The Rock as Roadblock: Boo!
Snake Eyes being awesome: Yay!
Anyone associated with the last movie: Boo!
Cobra Commander looking like Cobra Commander: Yay!
Lack of anything else recognizably G.I. JOE: Boo!
Storyline that actually seems like G.I. JOE: Yay!
Made by the same people: Boo!

This one doesn't look nearly as awful as the last one, but there is still plenty of time.

It looks like Jinx is in the movie as well.  Not only is the rock playing Roadblock, but he is leading the Joes.  It just doesn't look right.  The story does feel like a G.I. Joe story, except the fact that all of the other Joes are Dead and they are the only ones left.

Yep, not enough that they be locked up, like in similar stories from the comics.

The Rock as Roadblock "leading the Joes"?  It looked like Bruce Willis was gonna be the guy they turned to for leadership.  He does appear to be playing "The GI JOE" that was the namesake for the team or a similar character.

I've no problem with Roadblock taking charge of a situation if he had too.  Especially if he had a personal stake in it and was the senior ranking officer out of those three that looked like they survived.   Any ideas who they were suppose to be?

gi joe became action force in the uk, and the original 12 inch figures were know as action man

so if willis is the first ever joe, you could say his character is the original toy, so therefore bruce willis is the original action man

Duke, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes are apparently the only survivors of who were at The Pitt at the time of the attack.. and from the news feeds the new team lineup is adding Tunnel Rat, Clutch, Roadblock (who apparently shows up and finds the survivors who were not captured), Jinx, Flint, Lady Jaye, and Havoc to the roster. Bruce Willis showing up as Joe Colton I'm sure is a second act surprise (ruined of course by the teaser) to take over training the newest Joes and give Duke a major kick in the arse to resume his role as team leader (I'm assuming that Roadblock takes over because Duke is tramatized by losing his old team in The Pitt).

Zartan apparently is going through with Cobra Commander's last plan.. and Destro and Baroness are not listed among the returning cast so I'm sure they will probably explain he is off rebuilding his weapons company once he was freed from the Joe prison and she is still being deprogrammed. But it's awesome they will be revisiting the Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes conflict as it seems that he was found and resurrected like I figured he would.

I almost missed it too, because it's shown after Snake eyes appears and it's a similar enough look for the brief time it's up there to confuse the two.  Nonetheless he does have a variation of the classic Cobra Commander look, which actually looks pretty good.

I don't like the whole killing off most of the Joes thing, but at least this looks a lot better than the first one.

Well, it looks like it has lots of explosions, so I guess it can't be too bad.

When i saw the trailers for the first movie, I thought it looked like an absolute embarrassment of special effects and bad CGI.  After seeing the movie in theatres... I have to admit I liked it.  It seemed like the movie decided to emphasize the fantasy side of the franchise as opposed to the military aspect of it.  I'm guessing that's probably why Channing Tatum accepted the role of Duke.  I thought the characterization, casting, and acting on many of the characters was disappointing, especially Baroness as a mere mind-controller old-flame of Duke and brother of Cobra Commander.

So, I guess I'm trying to say that I'll approach the second film with an open-mind.

"We're going to do a conscientious 3D job because we've seen how it can better box office internationally," one of the studio execs just told me. "Jim Cameron did all of Titanic's 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out."

This just ticks me off.  As one of the few people who liked the first movie enough to want to see this sequel, I have to say this just about kills all my enthusiasm to do so.  I noticed the other week at the comic book store that they've already released the movie prequel comics too.  Man, this is either stupid or a remarkably desperate bid to put the movie up against some lesser competition.

Sounds like they are quickly opting out for a three-fold stall to: 1) Avoid being buried by Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, and Dark Knight Rises, 2) Reshoots for adding more scenes and fixing stuff that secret screeners have told them they were not happy with. 3) Convert the film into 3D so they can try to make for Avengers numbers because obviously charging more for tickets is why that franchise broke major records in just a week.

Paramount might be hoping that their deal with Hasbro might replace their previous Marvel franchise deal but they are dreaming and smoking some major drugs to even think that.

I can't help but think there were gonna be a few major character deaths in the movie and that Hasbro finally got scared about the fan backlash and decided to either add some scenes (like you said) or redub some lines of dialogue).

While all of the above are valid points about box office competition, you don't pull this kind of a move this close to a release date unless something is very wrong, or else you have no confidence in the film at all. Had they announced this 3-4 months ago, it would have made some sense (especially given the performance of movies like John Carter), but to do it now after so much advertising has been spent and a bunch of the merchandising already released to distributors.... its pretty unheard of and looks like a really bad sign.

I'm also thinking that Paramount is looking at their numbers coming in on Battleship (which I saw today at matinee price and was a fairly entertaining popcorn flick but not a "epic blockbuster" that the ads have been hyping it to be) and what they might be up against with the other summer films to come with their current incarnation of G.I. Joe Retaliation and just decided to panic and bail out for a later date. I've seen movie studios do this tactic before and it's never ended up well for the movie because it just sounds like they are making excuses for themselves releasing it before it was really ready. I'm sure many people would have hoped that Michael Bay's Transformers franchise might have been so much better if they pushed back the release of their films until they had all of the bad elements polished out of them.

I still find it amusing that Hasbro has to be hitting their head against the wall for letting their franchise rights lapse with Marvel right now after Avengers skyrocketed.

Yep.  Movies just ain't made and put out with the American audience in mind.  They're going after a larger slice of the international pie.  Will likely ship the finished movie to a studio overseas (ie here in China) then add 3D.  My buddy in Beijing doing outsourced post production editing is gonna love this. 

I liked the first movie too.  I thought it was fun.  I'll see how I feel in 9 months when it comes to seeing this sequel.

Hearing this, I can't help but think the 3D post-conversion is an excuse to delay a movie the studio has no confidence in releasing, particularly in a busy summer.  That doesn't necessarily mean it's bad (studio execs don't always pick winners or losers accurately, by any measure), but the movie was supposed to come out in a month.  It's unheard of to reschedule a release so late.  The studio execs are probably thinking next March looks open, and they can take a #1 box office weekend there by default, rather than risk get beaten by the Avengers in its 7th week of release, which would be embarrassing.  And no one wants to release an expensive flop, like Battleship is shaping up to be.

Well, there were a few moments there that felt like G.I. JOE....now if they'd just read some of the rest of the books, they might be able to make a decent movie...not this movie, but a decent one, someday.

To be honest, compared to that last pile they made that nearly wrecked my childhood 20 years after the fact, this movie was Saving Private Ryan. Yes, I'm saying it was THAT MUCH better. I'm not saying this movie was perfect or did everything right or even that it's a good movie. I'm just saying I can't adequately explain how BAD the first one was and how this one basically couldn't go anywhere but up.

I mean, it was a popcorn movie. I went in expecting it to be.  I came out seeing just that. A lot of action, some corny dialogue and and absolutely zero thought provocation.  To be honest, it actually met my expectations. Yes, they were sadly lowered, but it met them. It actually even surpassed it in a lot of respects.  I got to say I had to "appreciate" them trying to integrate aspects of the comics.  The Blind Master(who was black, which I forgot), Zartan's part in the death of the Hard Master, actual vehicles, Storm Shadow fighting WITH Joes and (though it wasn't the comic) the movie version of Silent Interlude.  They even had Snake-Eyes using Uzis, references to the Pit and dumb references to Roadblock rhyming.

In all, it has it's faults, yeah.  The comic DEFINITELY has much more drama and way better characterization, and writing. But after that... Whatever-you-call-it a few years ago and for what was to be a hour and a half mindless action flick, it could have done a lot worse.

I've not seen it yet, so I can't comment too much on the quality of the film, but the early box-office reception suggests the studio made the right call in delaying this from a late June 2012 release.  It may not have ended up being a "Summer blockbuster," it it might well be on its way to being a "Spring hit."

Mr. Moviefone actually gave it a positive review.  Well just barely, but he did say it was worth watching basically.

I'm honestly not sure how they could have messed up the first one so bad.  All you need to know is bad guys with lots of guns fight good guys with lots of guns.  Throw in a vaguely sci fi plot and the familiar characters and have lots of explosions and call it a day.  I'm not sure how they managed to mess that up the first time.
