Comic Book Scans

There was a website that had pages dedicated to all sorts of comics. On each of these pages were cover pictures of the comics and links to rapidshare files that contain one or more scanned comic books. Some were public domain, or at least the company that published them hasn't existed for decades. Some were not. There were comics going to The Golden Age in some cases. There were pages of science fiction, horror, western, crime, and humor comics. There were hundreds of web pages, with any number of links on each page.

The site has been shut down. For awhile, Google had some archive pages that you could use to access the rapidshare files. Now those archives are gone. Before they were erased, a fellow poster on a pulp newsgroup had copied them and saved them. He has posted a zip file of these pages on rapidshare. Some of the links on these pages no longer work, but many of them do. This is the address of the archived webpage archive:

http://rapidshare.com/files/388919456/comicsworld.7z

I imagine that as time goes by, many of these links will go dead.

Thank you for this.  Although, I'm a little surprised they left them in an image format, and didn't convert to pdf.

*goes to download until his modem (or the pages) craps out*

Having been happily downloading for the past 5 days, I've come across a couple of disappointments:

The LSH section is woefully lacking in back issues.  *I've* got issues older than what's in there.

Not all of the Marvel Zombies stuff had been uploaded....I think I missed something along the way.

I have been unable to find *any* of the Elseworlds material, with the exception of John Byrne's Generations runs.  If anyone else has found these, let me know where they might reside.

on a silly note, I'm a little surprised that Cherry Poptart didn't seem to make the cut, considering all of the Underground titles that did slide in.

On the up side, the sheer amount of MAD issues is almost mind-boggling.  And they have the entire run of Pizzazz...very unexpected.

Should I give the House of M arc a read, just to understand the extended pain most have already witnessed?  Will it help me to understand anything better?

Those are not all the pages that were on the site; they are apparently the ones that the poster found interesting.

I have one or two that he didn't, but they are miscellaneous vintage and such (lot of obscure characters).

Trelau

So, in a matter of weeks/month, all this work will be lost? Didn't the community behind the website reformed somawhere else?

Anyway, i'm getting my hands on anything i can (eck, i don't even know what half the stuff is) and i'm having a lots of fun reading the first issues of Superboy.
I really hope this archive don't just disappear

I imagine that a version of the website/blog will return. It will probably be lacking some of the links.

Some of the flies are corrupt also. But there is still a LOT of good (and bad, and so bad it's good) reading still available. Also, I've found some stuff in what may be the wrong areas. Marvel's Daring Mystery in the Horror section, for instance. I can't find Adventure, which I would have liked...

And does anyone want the two vintage comics pages I saved? I don't think they were included in the archive.

Ah, I see.  That makes a bit more sense (although the LSH page being emptier than I'd like still doesn't).

If they do remake the site, please let us know....I'd be interested in seeing what else I'm not seeing.   ;)

What sort of vintage, obscure characters had you saved?

I don't even know where to start. There are one or two issues of some pretty obscure stuff, like Bomber Comics, and a couple of issues of not-so-obscure Alpha Flight, so it goes from the early golden age through the silver or bronze age. Everything from 3D Dolly to Zaza the Mystic. It looks like a lot of stuff that they only had one or two issues of, so they put them here. It's over 1100 comics running over 9gb when downloaded (of course the pages are less than 300kb). Good Stuff, Bad Stuff, and So Bad It's Good Stuff.

One other thing: the site was constantly being updated. It may have been that they were working on The Legion.

It's possible to stumble upon some of the "missing" content from the main archive.  I've had some (limited) success by searching on FilesTube.com, using "comicsworld" and "wordpress" in the search parameters.  Adding other info may help narrow it down (from the over 2900), but no guarantees.  Many of them appear to be single issues, and much is probably covered in the main archive.  I've found some titles that would have been in the Western, TV and Movies, and I'm presuming Superhero (Teen Titans) categories, as well as what looks to be a few of the Dutch comics.  It's all very hit & miss, however.  If anyone would like a copy of the links I've cut&pasted that don't seem to be in the main archive (by no means all-inclusive), let me know and I can post or email them.

I would. I've about decided to post the vintage pages at CO6 for anyone who wants them.

When you open one of these sites press  ctrl + F this will open a find box. Type in what you are looking for; such as Adventure. Press next and this will take you to each title that has adventure in it. LOSH is under 3 or 4 different titles. (legion2, legionosh under superheroes) (legionotd, legionnaires, legionlost, legion under Miscellaneous) (Some of the legion is under Superboy and Action comics) (Adventure comics is under Vintage) The category Vintage is not in the zip file so that one is lost The links on the right side will not work but look under the category in the zip file and open from there and it will work :rickbm

This is what I've culled from Filestube that I thought might be of interest (and isn't in the main archive).  Some of the groupings I've had to guess on where they might be.  I've checked a couple, and they seem to work fine.

The megaupload links seem to work without any wait time inbetween.  This was from just the first 100 pages of links using "comicsworld" and "wordpress" in the search; but it only seems to let you go up to 100 pages.  At the time I didn't realize that all of the Adventure Comics and Betty Page links that I saw were "lost" ones as well.

here is a link that will help you can get Adventure Comics here http://www.mediafire.com/?wzz0wntnnzm Just download and unzip the file this will give you all the links to comicsworld files  :rickbm

At Character Obscura 6, in the files section, is a rar file called Comic Links. It has some saved web pages that were not in the original group of files saved.

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/characterobscura6/

If you aren't a member of the group, you will have to join, but you can remove your membership late if you don't want to remain a member.

Hey guys, I thought I'd add my to cents and post a link I found for the "Blaze of Glory" Marvel mini that modernized their old west heroes. I got to the page through the Internet Archive, but the rapidshare link dosen't work (actually if you just delete the archive part of the address it'll to take you to the download), posting the link here for anyone interested http://rs368.rapidshare.com/files/89482964/blaze.rar I'm guessing this tatic could work for the pages up at the Archive, but there aren't that many links.

Panther_Gunn

From what I can tell, the file that Green Hornet linked to earlier is a complete archive of all of the pages.  I've been using that one almost since he posted it, and haven't found anything missing yet.

Unless what you're finding is different than what I am, you might find this of interest.

I've run across quite a few issues that my comic reader (I've been using Comical) won't open.  In the ones that I've tried so far, it's just a matter of re-archiving them to get them to work again.

I start by extracting the issue that doesn't work (one of the last ones had 7 out of 10 issues that had this problem), then opening the .cbr file with the appropriate archiver (I'm using Winrar).  I then extract the entire folder, so I have an uncompressed folder with all of the .jpg's in it.  I re-compress that folder, and change the file extension from .rar to .cbr, and as quick as you can say " 'Nuff said!", it's all good.  Then it's just a simple matter of adding it back to the original .rar that I took it from.  I can create a step-by-step, with images, if anyone could use a little more precise/explicit instructions.

I use CDisplayEx and haven't had a problem yet (I've probably downloaded about a 100 files in the two months this threads been up)
