There is a new State of the Game report from the new executive producer, Dan Stahl:

I missed posting about the August Engineering Report, which you can read here if you like:

Spoiler
QuoteGreetings!

Welcome back to another edition of the Engineering Report! We are certainly excited to see more players coming back to Star Trek to check out the Season Two: Ancient Enemies update. In a market where new MMOs are struggling to find a foothold and more and more games are shutting down, we recognize and thank you for continuing to support Star Trek. This is your game and we will continue to listen and drive development in the direction that you tell us it needs to go in.

Right now there are two big things we're hearing and working to deliver. Improved and fixed PVP and more PVE content for everyone. Add in more ships, more costumes, and more overall Star Trek and you can see that a lot of the changes you are asking for are on the radar. We want to see the game continue to improve and grow over time and after our six month anniversary it is amazing to look back at how many updates have gone into the game already. We plan to continue releasing updates that improve the quality of the game.

In fact, that is the goal and focus of the development team. Focus on Quality. There are many features in the game that need a quality touch and instead of promising that we have a quick fix around the corner, we are taking the time to develop a solid solution and deliver a functional and tested feature. The new PVP challenge system is an example of this. We recognized that PVP was in a scary state after the release of Season Two, and instead of rushing out a temporary solution, we've been working to deliver an improved Queue and Challenge system. Those changes have been going onto the test shard and we've been incorporating feedback and bug reports to ensure the update addresses the issue.

So while the team takes time to address your concerns and wishes for the game, we are also working on new ways to introduce content into the game. In the immediate future we will be releasing our first weekly series focusing on the Breen. These series will allow a way for us to release content on a steady basis in a fun and exciting way. Another way we want to introduce new content in the game is to allow you to make your mission content in the game via a User Generated Content Tool.

While still in the infancy stage, our vision for UGC is to not just put players in a box and let them make their own content in some corner of the universe, but allow you to create missions that take place in the existing game. Want to make a new mission that takes place on Deep Space Nine? Go for it! Want to make a mission that takes you from P'Jem to Andoria to Vulcan? Go for it! We want you to have the flexibility to use existing locales in your content as well as existing contacts. There's a lot of tech required to make that happen, and we may not even get close by the start of Season 3, but we are going to put a stake in the ground and start making the system.

Another big change we are making internally is focusing less on "big updates" like Season one or Season two and focusing more on the features, fixes, and content you care about. We all agree Sector Space needs to change. So we're working on it. I honestly don't know when we'll be able to release a new sector space to you, but the key is - its a priority and we're working on it. We'll show you progress and even discuss putting up test versions on TRIBBLE so you can give feedback. When we all agree its ready and awesome. Then we'll release it.

Given that switch away from "the next big update", I'm adding a few new sections to the report this time around to give a better idea of what is "In Development" = we have resources working on this now. "In Design Discussion" = we have designers in meetings discussing how to make or improve this feature. "On Hold" = we were in development of the feature and hit a snag or some other tech issue that needs to be resolved before we can move forward.

We look forward to delivering all of the features listed below. As we move forward, you'll see features and issues continue to move around from design to development to testing. I'm also hoping to continue to shrink the number of issues under investigation and the QA and Customer Service departments are renewing efforts to track down your bugs and ensure that we have fixes on the way for anything that is causing you an issue.

The future for Star Trek looks awesome from where I'm sitting and look forward to working together to continually improve the game.

Now on to the report!

And a new Engineering Report for September!:

http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=180790
QuoteGreetings!

It's time for another Engineering Report! Lots of stuff to review this time around. The Breen Featured Episodes are going strong (although we're surprised that only half of you have played them yet!). The next features series is well in development and is expected to offer some really cool new mission moments. New space combat tweaks are being tested on the internal shard, and the team has started development on a new targeting mode that promises to bring a new way to experience ground combat in STO.

Our recent meetings with CBS also turned up some interesting discussions and several of the features we had hoped to deliver are being rescoped and evaluated due to some concerns. This primarily impacts the Enterprise J and the Kzinti. I'm updating the report to reflect this and want to remind everyone that there is a lot of fluidity to making an MMO and in order to react to issues that get brought up we often have to shift things around. Luckily we always have a ton of new updates in the works so there will always be something new to talk about.

One of the questions I've been seeing recently is the discussion about how the "Season" releases are impacted or work in conjunction with the Featured Episodes. Seasons are our way of sectioning off the large code features we want to work on without impacting the current game. So when I think of the release of Season 3, I think of big large broad stroke features such as User Generated Content Tools, Sector Space redesign, Ground Combat Changes, and other features that cannot be done in smaller updates. So when I talk about Seasons in the future, I'm thinking less about new mission content, and more about big feature updates.

When it comes to content updates, we are not tied to specific code changes being made in the game and can continue to release new updates on a regular basis. So for the immediate future, all of the new mission content being added to the game will primarily be done through the Featured Episode updates. We expect to be adding content on a regular basis this way as it allows us the flexibility to work at a faster pace than being tied to the release of a big seasonal update. So in a nutshell, expect constant content updates to have happen regularly throughout the season and big feature updates to happen the day the season starts.

Hope that clears up some questions about Seasons and future mission content.

Now on to the report!

I'm looking forward to the new sector space design. I really hope they do away with the grid lines...it feels so confining.

The First Officer System sounds cool too.

I'm disappointed that their adding the open jacket uniform from the PC gamer cover. With the addition of the Mirror Universe outfits...there are enough slutty looking female officers around already. Oh Starfleet...how you've been degraded so.
Clothes make the man and colourful tights make the Super-Hero.

Just to digress from the topic a bit...

There are so many non-uniforms running around that I wonder how you could even call them uniforms.  But would the player base truly have been happy with a base uniform that you could only customize in limited ways?  The vast array of customizations would have made more sense (on the Fed side) if there were more career paths available than Starfleet.  Like a crew of privateers or mercenaries.  But... I'm flexible on this.  I can accept the non-uniforms.  Even in various versions of Star Trek the uniforms weren't always uniform (Deanna Troi being one notable example).  And if you factor in major characters who weren't actually Starfleet (Kira, Odo, Seven of Nine) then yeah.

It does seem at best odd that the Captain of a Starfleet vessel would be dressed as anything other than a Starfleet officer.  But from an MMO viewpoint, it sure makes it easier to tell who's who.
STO/CO: @bluegeek

Courtnall6

Off duty uniforms I can live with and don't really care about...but when Starfleet Captains, dressed in a variant of a Starfleet uniforms, start to look like they belong on a street corner rather than the bridge...there is a problem there.
Clothes make the man and colourful tights make the Super-Hero.

BlueBard

I guess the solution there is simple... don't RP with anyone who doesn't look like Starfleet.  If you run into them at DS9 or ESD, pretend they're civvies.  Or maybe somebody's pet hologram that got loose in the wild.  ("Fed Girls Are Easy" being a fairly popular holo in Ferengi establishments across the galaxy...)

I don't think the Klingons have the same issue, at least not at present.  The 'skankiest' outfits available are for Orion women and that is practically canon.  (Not sure if the Orion costume pieces are available to Klingon women or not...)
STO/CO: @bluegeek

pr1983

i'm pretty strict about my own crew (FC, DS9 S5-7 unis only), but i just leave everyone else alone.

though i am morbidly curious what you guys mean by slutty female feds... i can honestly say i havent seen any.

BlueBard

I have.  The costume pieces for TOS and the Mirror Universe are largely what makes such outfits possible for Starfleet.  Open jackets, too.

(Not gonna talk about Orion female costume pieces... they're supposed to look like that.  Although my Orion Science Captain is fairly decently-dressed.)

But I don't really think it's that bad.  What I see more often are Starfleet-ish costumes in very original color combinations.  (I saw one guy running around in a White and Green Wrath of Khan uni, once.)  And of course the multitudes of Tac officers of both genders roaming around in form-fitting body armor.

I don't restrict myself to canon outfits and colors, but I prefer not to stray too far away from the Starfleet look.

BTW, there's a new Engineering Report up.  I'll post more details when I can.

Ignoring the Long Range forecast for the moment...

I am very interested in seeing what the Vulcan D'kyr ship has under the hood, and am saving my VA ship token just in case.

I am really looking forward to Featured Episodes Series 3...
PVE Mission Queues...
Overhauled Ground Combat...
Exploration redesign...
the Duty Officer System...
And of course, updates to the Foundry.
