I was going through my massive collection of skins and meshes, trying to categorize some that haven't been sorted, when I noticed a few very similar ones... without any sort of name. I believe these are from the same person because they all had .GIF thumbnails (which is rather unusual) and (all except pwrprncss.gif) use the same glowing red light as a background:

Dreamer.gif
Dreamer.zip

pwrprncss.gif

saturngirl.gif
SaturnGirl.zip

triad.gif
Triad.zip

violet.gif
Violet.zip

Some of these I only have the .GIF image for. But I examined the contents of those with a .ZIP archive and while they do have a readme.txt, they do not have any sort of credits. It merely tells where to find the meshes that goes with their skins:

 SKin                                              Mesh
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Brainiac 5 vxMale
Chameleon Boy chameleon boy_t
Cosmic Boy vxmale
Dream Girl female_basic_straighthair
Element Lad vxMale
Karate Kid vxMale
Leviathan vxMale_lc_gloves
Lightning Lad vxMale
Lightning Lass female_basic_shorthair
Mon-El vx_longhair
Phantom Girl fb_lawhair
Saturn Girl female_basic_straighthair
Sensor Girl fl_cape69
Shadow Lass fl_cape69
Star Boy vxMale
Sun Boy vxMale
Superboy vxSuperboy
Supergirl supergirl_pg_t_kx
Timberwolf vxmale
Triad female_basic_shorthair
Ultra Boy vxMale
Shrinking Violet fb_lawhair
Wildfire vxMale_noface

[Note: I'm not looking for the meshes on the right, only the skins at the top of this post.]

Anyway, I started collecting skins and meshes several years ago, so I do not recall where I got these. I've already tried the usual master mesh lists, but came up empty. I also tried various Google searches - also a dead end. I'm hoping someone here might recognize these and offer a clue to who made them or where they are/were to be found. Any help is appreciated.

Those look like Greycount's skins from SkinIndex. Wow, I wish I still had all those skins I submitted there.

Thanks for the tip.  :cool:

Google searches do not turn up any relevant results with " SkinIndex 'Freedom Force' "... I guess it's safe to say that SkinIndex is gone now?
I seem to recall a place by that name. But if someone could supply a link for where the site used to be, it would be appreciated. I'm hoping archive.org can supply at least a partial site archive so I can confirm these skins.

the skin dex is long gone, marvel stepped in because it was doing naughty things with the sims.

I think 99.9% it was pulled off the net from all sources

that power princess looks like catmanex, but i haven't seen him around in a long time.
if you find out who they were from, and everything is ok, would you be willing to upload them somewhere for general consumption?

Panther_Gunn

I don't think those are Greycount skins, and if they are, they definitely aren't from the Skindex days.  Most of those skins are listed for VX meshes, and I don't think he ever did any skins specifically for those meshes.  That being said, you can double-check those against the skins he has loaded on alex's site.

Hmm... I don't have any skins by catmanex to compare with. I'll have to search the mesh indexes.

Unfortunately, I only have the actual skins for about half of these thumbnails:

Dreamer.zip
SaturnGirl.zip
Triad.zip
Violet.zip

But even if I did find out who they're from, don't I have to get their permission to upload for general consumption? (Or am I still not comprehending the forum rules?) Of course, sharing via email is a different story.

You know, when I first looked at these skins I also suspected they might be Greycount's. I honestly find a certain resemblance to his work. (Maybe early work, 'cause his stuff on Alex's site is awesome.) But looking at his stuff on Alex's Freedom Fortress I do not find anything close. Greycount does have skins for Lightning Lass, Phantom Girl, and Saturn Girl, but those are very different costumes and for different meshes.

BTW: I also suspected these might be from CastleBravo, but I can't remember why now... I only have one confirmed "skin" by CastleBravo and that's merely some skin pieces inside Tommyboy's war_machine_t.zip.

On a hunch, I just checked the wayback machine at archive.org: The are Thunder's skins, originally posted at Gamma Patrol.

Waitaminit... you mean these links WORK?

Excuse me; I'm going to be busy for awhile...

...Later...

Okay, not all of them work. I got two off that first page, but the rest may not be there. It would be worth checking back.

Randomdays

It appears that only a FEW links work, but still pretty awesome.

I've found that the best thing to do on the internet archive is get a mass downloader, so you don't have to waste too much time figuring out which links work and which don't

Hey, thanks doctorchallenger! Mystery solved!

BTW: For those not wanting to manually sort through what's left of the site or sort through tiered folders of images and HTML (via a website downloader), these are the links that work:

From top of main page:
* Blitzkrieg (by AVALON)
* Blizzard II (by Podmark)

From the Meshes page:
* classic_iceman (mesh by Ink, skin by Tetragene)
* classic_psylock (mesh by Ink, skin by Tetragene)
* Exodus (mesh by Ink, skin by Afghan Ant)

And from the gammapatrol.com/files/thunder/ directory, Thunder's stuff:
* Hype_2pack.zip
* JLA_canary.zip
* thunder_prime.zip
* scarecrow.zip
* grundy.zip
* grodd.zip

But I guess this means the four Thunder files I mentioned at the top of this thread are no longer available. Let me know if you need them.

Edit: I found a few more skins by Thunder on my drives:

* JLA_hawkman.zip
* JLA_hawkwoman.zip
* JSA_DinahDrakeLance.zip
* JSA_shierasanders.zip
* JusticeLords_hawkgirl.zip
* JusticeLords_ww.zip
* new_angel.zip (actually, Marvel's Angel: mesh by Ink, skin by Thunder)
* PwrPrncss.zip
* RedRaven_2pack.zip
* volt.zip

PS: bearded, you have mail...

So many great skins lost forever. As a newcomer I'm sad I arrived after the site's demise. I would love to get my hands on that Captain Mar-Vell and some of the Legionnaires...

Thunder

I still have most of my Gamma patrol skins.  It's funny that I just happened to browse the site today.

Thunder

Stay tuned...I am going to open a Yahoo group for my skins.  I have a couple of others I have done since the Gamma Patrol days.

says you, i'm happy to be gone of 90% of my GPL work.

President Raygun

Wow, that's great news Thunder, as someone who missed out completely on the GPL days I think I speak for quite a few of us when I say it's greatly appreciated

All of Thunder's skins seems to contain identical readme files, which match his skins with the appropriate meshes. But some of these meshes I can't seem to find. Were these exclusive to the Gamma Patrol site before it disappeared? Or is there still some place to find these?

* female_basic_straighthair
* female_basic_shorthair
* fb_lawhair

Of these, fb_lawhair is what I would appreciate.

I think I ended up with the equivalent of female_basic_straighthair by using "female_basic_straighthair_heels_effects" by Lord Ehmsidy. However, that file was just the .NIF mesh, with no skins or readme or anything. I got it to work, though.

Ooleyman's "female_shorthair" sounds like it may be equivalent to "female_basic_shorthair". Judging by the thumbnail image I have of Thunder's "lightninglass" skin for "female_basic_shorthair", it does indeed look to be the same. (It's pretty easy to tell because they have very unique heads and a weird, almost crooked, pencil neck.)

I may have even found something similar (but not identical) to fb_lawhair. Fusion's Temper.zip skin/mesh appears to be a female_basic with a law head. But it also has Law's blindfold, cuffs on the wrists and funky boots. And it appears to always face away from opponents, like the way Law behaves. I thought it used Law keyframes, but it does use female_basic frames. Even after replacing the keyframes, the head still faces away. :(

Panther_Gunn

I'm *pretty* sure I have the straighthair mesh (needed it for a Vindicator skin).  I can double check sometime later tonight.
