Montreal studio set to create high-end titles.

by Jim Reilly

March 22, 2010 - Warner Bros. is looking to build off the success of Batman: Arkham Asylum as it plans to release more DC Comics videogames.

The company announced the opening of a brand new game development studio in Montreal, Quebec today. The studio hopes to grow to around 300 employees by 2015, and will house "high-end interactive gaming product development" as well as animation, QA, and game translation.

"We are proud that Warner Bros. has chosen Quebec. We have done a lot of work to position Quebec as an essential place to invest that is competitive, and possesses an exceptional and highly qualified workforce. Warner Bros. has acknowledged this and we are very excited to welcome them", stated Quebec Premier Jean Charest.

While no game titles were announced during the press conference, Canadian website GameFocus was able to confirm with the President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Martin Tremblay, that the studio will focus on creating DC Comics licensed videogame titles.

Last fall, Warner Bros. announced a sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum was in development by London-based RockSteady Studios. The publisher would purchase a majority of the studio months later.

Just awesome, can't wait for a JLA, Green Lantern, and Flash game.

I'm curious to see how they're going to make a Flash game that gives you the "feel" of playing as The Flash while being, uh... playable. I just hope they don't make a Sonic rip-off or anything.

Here's hoping the new games can live up to the quality standards set by Arkham Asylum.

For Flash they should have the environment slow down around him when he uses his speed, for close combat and completing tasks. But the news of them planing to work on some new DC games sounds great

I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

Maybe they could make The Flash game like this:

That is amazing, and the freeroam reminded me of what I've enjoyed of some spidey games.

y'know this may strike you as odd, but I'd rather see a linear Flash game than a free-roam.  I'm thinking of something like Uncharted, or Arkham Asylum itself.  But of course on a much grander scale.
That way we could get some great set pieces, instead of being stuck in a giant city.
In a cool, linear action adventure now we get to see lots of cutscenes and quicktime events - I think the Flash would benefit from things like that... just imagine chasing Zoom around Mount Everest, or escaping crumbling ruins in Gorilla City, fighting weather wizard in the southern states, trying to prevent a hurricane.

I'm starting to think thats its really hard to pull off a free-roam game correctly when you have a really powerful protagonist.
I'm not sure about inFamous,  but in Prototype, by the time you were uber, all of Manhattan was out to kill you pretty much.
If you are Superman, Wonder Woman, or even The Flash,  I don't think countless minons in a free-roam should pose a threat.

That video clip was great.  You can see all of the rough edges, but the potential is there, too.  Too bad it didn't happen.

I didn't see anything that said it was a freeroam game, though.  Did I miss something?  You can't necessarily tell from that clip that it was freeroam.  For the Flash, every scene had better be really big unless you want players constantly bouncing off air walls.

Actually, they could use the bullet time set-up like in Stranglehold and Max Payne for several things in this game and it'd come off pretty well.  Especially like what was done in Stranglehold.

A similar way to do it would be an acceleration mechanic.  As long as Flash keeps moving, he gets faster, which makes everything else slow down, but if you stop moving, then he goes back to normal speed and you have to get him moving all over again.  So keep going and you can dodge bullets and take out thugs before they can blink, stop, and you suddenly become vulnerable.
I am the cat that walks by himself, all ways are alike to me.

Man, that game looks like it would have been pretty cool.

Sounds similar to how it worked in Stranglehold.  You were not Invulnerable but the movement of enemies and their bullets slowed down to where you had not only more time to dodge bullet and aim at enemies but could execute trick shots to bring down the environment on top of enemies.

If the new games in deveiopment are anywhere near as good as Arkham Asylum's storyline I think we'll be in for a treat. Personally I'd like a JSA game but with the films in development I might have a bit of a wait(unless the Cap film is an hit!)
