Console Exclusives... I hate them... so very much...

I actually saw this said as a serious statement on another forum...

Quoteif Sucker Punch ever give this gem to Microsoft they would've made the mistake of their lives.

Ignore the horrible grammar of it but this quote was in regards to them releasing Infamous on the 360 as well it is also from another forum. Which won't happen though Sucker Punch is third party developer, they have ALWAYS worked exclusively with Sony. Of course at this point this makes me wonder about certain things.

How can doubling your possible amount of buyers ever be bad? Why would you want to sell less than the maximum amount possible of copies?

Of course using that logic most developers should be focusing on the Wii, which might actually happen if Nintendo supported third party developers but they don't. Nintendo has always been rather stupid in that regard, I guess they like short life expectancy consoles... Gamecube, Virtual Boy, Nintendo 64 and all that.

Considering at this point the PS3 and Xbox360 literally have almost exactly the same size install base of users... why would you make an exclusive? Isn't it really just shooting yourself in the foot? I can understand not touching the PC market with a release to an extent, and as mentioned before the Wii isn't third party friendly (Nintendo never has been) so no Wii release also makes sense not even considering that they usually have to muddy down graphics & settings or totally remove features for Wii releases, so I can see why they don't release all games on everything. Why not release games on both Xbox360 and PS3? The only real reason I can figure for exclusives is the existence of first party & second party developers... but even then... I'd be awfully tempted to renegotiate all those contracts (at least as a second party developer) to get to double my potential amount of customers. Especially in the current market where both consoles sit pretty much equal, seeing as how few exclusives they both have.

Perhaps the companies making exclusively for one platform get a much better deal from the console company they make games for. That would make some sort of sense.
Also I suspect if game X is exclusive to platform A, and game Y is for platform A and B, game X sells a bit better on platform A than game Y does. People like "exclusive" things.
Plus, porting to another platform requires extra work, extra staff, higher costs.
I imagine all the above make it make economic sense for the "exclusive" developers to keep doing so.

But otherwise, I agree, it makes no sense at all to half your potential customer base.

Ehh, y'all are underestimating the number of people silly enough to have both consoles. :P

Guilty

I basically bought my PS3 for the bluray player (cheaper than a standard player at the time) and God of War III.

Exclusives can get annoying...especially Downloadable Content. I originally bought Fallout 3 for my PS3...little did I know PS3 owners would get a complete shaft on DLC. Before I buy a game now...I have to check which system gets the exclusive DLCs.

Not a complete shaft- you're getting the DLC, just much, MUCH later than everyone else

I think its just a fact of the console companies offering some developers a boat load of money to stay exclusive.  Makes sense from the console makers standpoint unfortunatley.

I agree though, I cant stand them as well.  Especially when its console exclusive characters and modes.  Whats even worse is that some of these exclusives are in fact on the disc of the opposing console version already but are locked away so that they may be purchased as DLC later.

I remain PC only...

Haha..ditto, though PS3 is awfully tempting for Little Big Planet *le sigh*

I agree with the principle behind this thread but as has been mentioned, this is more about selling consoles than games.  Sony / Microsoft need high profile exclusives to distinguish their product and that's the way it is, alas.  Although I can imagine if there were NO exclusives whatsoever, each machine would still have their respective selling points.

From my point of view it doesn't bother me too much really.  If a great sounding XBox game comes along that isn't on the PS3, I'll tend not to pay it too much attention so that I won't end up being too envious  :P.  There's usually something available in a similar vein anyway (e.g. Halo / Gears or Killzone / Resistance).  In the case of Infamous, which spawned this thread, I gather that there is a similar game coming on both consoles, called Prototype.  I don't know anything more than that about it though.

Yeah, this is an unlikely forum for console waring, if anything we all just seem annoyed when we cant play something. In my case like I said I'm PC only so I never got to try out Dead Rising which looked right up my alley, not to mention some fun looking Wii games and of course Little Big Planet which was mentioned earlier.

daerdevil

I'm guessing that there must be more money trading hands for "exclusives" than there is for actual sales.  I tend to not buy into most of the exclusive stuff.  I ended up buying the Xbox 360 because of the apparent backwards compatibility support (which has since been abandoned) so I could pick up those exclusives that never made it to the Sony (namely KOTOR).  Plus I had to have that Dead Rising.  As for all the PS3 exclusives I just tune it out...don't even know what Little Big Planet is other than the little doll you see everywhere.  Infamous, I thought that was Prototype.  Just give me some Rock Band songs and Fallout 3 content and I'm happy.  If I had my druthers, I'd stick with the PC, but I never seem to meet the specs for anything worthwhile.

I know, man. I can't get anything for my 2600 anymore. I hate console exclusives!

Ha ha ha, looking at the game, I was thinking "Isn't someone already making this, except with a slightly better premise?"

I HAVE a console, but I can't actually remember when I last played it. I almost dragged it out for Wolverine...it will be dusted off for Batman and Prototype, I think, but I'm pretty sure they're coming out on PC as well. Doesn't bother me so much, 'exclusive' content, because with a PC game you can just mod it in, which is one of the main reasons I haven't used my console in so long  :D
I so need booze -_-

there have been rumors galore about Metal Gear Solid 4 porting to the Xbox360, and for whatever reason, people actually get angry at console exclusives porting to other consoles. Hell, remember when Resident Evil 4 went from the Wii to the PS2? All these gamecube nutjobs went crazy mad at Capcom.

And it makes absolutely no sense. The only reason why I can think anyone would get upset, is if that one single game was what convinced you to buy the console. If the only reason why I bought a gamecube was for RE4, and then it went to the PS2, then yeah, I could understand the anger. But it's also fairly selfish when you boil it down. And this generation is different. There aren't that many console exclusives, and when they do port (Bioshock, GTA last gen) I would think it would be a good thing for everyone, really. The game companies get more money, the franchise gets a larger userbase, etc.

I understand setting your console apart from the competition, but that doesn't explain why consumers get upset...

Eh, that's basically it. Single-console owners don't want to experience buyer's remorse. So when it boiled down to it, the Nintendo fans with limited money felt bad that PS2 also got the very best game of all time, causing a situation where PS2 would have been the better purchase overall. Which of course is stupid . Also stupidos on the internet love to fight over consoles. I used to do it for no reason.
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.
