Quote from: http://comics.ign.com/articles/114/1142513p1.htmlMarvel Comics announced today the promotion of Axel Alonso, formerly Vice President, Executive Editor, to Editor-in-Chief. Alonso steps into the role formerly held by Joe Quesada, who will now be focusing solely on his duties as Chief Creative Officer overseeing Marvel's forays into other entertainment mediums.

"Marvel has a great history of the most dynamic and memorable EICs in comics history and I'm honored to step into this role," said Axel Alonso. "I've been blessed to work with some of the most creative men and women in the world, bringing to life some of the most compelling stories you'll find in any medium. This new role provides me with exciting challenges and prospects I've never encountered before, but I know one thing -- Marvel's getting even bigger in 2011."

Alonso began as a Senior Editor at Marvel in 2000, infusing the publisher with fresh talent and edgy stories as a primary voice behind the Marvel MAX imprint and an editor on acclaimed series like Daredevil, X-Men, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Punisher.

Marvel CCO Joe Quesada said, "It's with tremendous pride that I announce Axel Alonso's promotion to Editor-In-Chief. For over a decade, Axel's been instrumental in bringing fresh new voices to Marvel and reinventing our biggest characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Wolverine and so many more. He's fought to create unique imprints like Marvel MAX while also bringing fresh new voices to the Marvel family."

Quesasda continued, "Most of you know Axel from his high profile job as Vice President, Executive Editor and the man behind some of our very best and edgiest books. Time and time again, Axel has proven that he is one of the very best story editors in the history of our medium and one of the finest people I know. And, like everyone here at Marvel, he has one single focus, bringing you the best stories with the best characters in all of comicdom. That's why I have no doubt that Axel will bring Marvel Comics to greater heights than it's ever known!"

*Tom Brevoort is also getting a promotion and will be the new Senior Vice President of Publishing.*

Honestly, this could be a good or bad thing. Axel is a fairly good editor, but, and it's a big but (haha, so clever), the x-books are also a giant mess under his editorial guidance right now. They're full of errors, typos, and bad continuity, and it feels like the writers can almost get away with anything. It's not singled down to just him though, considering Marvel has a tier system and these things seem to get by ALL the editors involved.

My honest reaction is..."Oh...more of the same then". I hope that he can bring something new to the table but his track record has been a little spotty like you said Prev. But my hope springs eternal when it comes to Marvel. I guess we'll see.
I can't help it that I look so good baby! I'm just a love machine!

It's just titles changing around. Quesada is still ultimately in charge, and Alonso and Breevort will mostly just be carrying on in the roles they already had. This is mostly a no change.

However, good for them, hope it came with a pay raise.

Perhaps, but let's take in last year (2010) and compare it to the 2-3 years before (2007-2009). Quesada was practically quiet in 2010 and barely contributed anything that the fans actively know about outside of his Spider-man arc and his lust for media events for... comic events... which the mainstream does not care about. *confused*

I honestly think that Quesada was so busy and worn out from essentially doing 2-3 jobs at once that comics began to fall to the wayside, so Axel taking over the role could mean some very different outcomes... or it could be nothing at all.

Whatever happened to that guy who started Astonishing X-Men, Josh Wheatley or whatever? I haven't read any of his other stuff, but his stories and character development were good and he seems to be fairly decent at writing dialog. Now he doesn't seem to be writing anything for Marvel or otherwise. He obviously doesn't know how to keep trying after something falls through.
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

O.o   I think you are referring to Joss Whedon and I think between his work on producing/directing/writing Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse he kinda has had his plate full. He just finished up writing the Buffy Season Eight comics and is about to start his Marvel directorial debut with The Avengers movie. Joss has said he wants to work with Marvel on rebooting the X-Men franchise once Fox finally gives up their rights to making pointless spin offs of Bryan Singer's work.

Joss left the Astonishing X-Men title once he felt he told the story he wanted to tell and other projects of his were just starting up (i.e. the beforementioned Buffy Season Eight comic) which he felt needed his full attention. Marvel on the other hand just decided to replace the writer with a more fan popular one who just drove the comic straight into the circular trash bin.

There there BWPS.

May I suggest investing in <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags? ;)
