I'm fairly certain someone here has read this series, as it is several years old, but I just found it the other day.  It's very well written and follows the activities of Astra, America's newest superhero from her manifestation as a superhuman onwards.  Honestly, I'm only about 3/4 through the first book but I will be buying the rest!
