Matt Ryan Cast at John Constantine in NBC Series

Storyline: A man struggling with his faith is haunted by the sins of his past but is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

Written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) and Daniel Cerone ("The Mentalist"), NBC has officially ordered a pilot for "Constantine," which will be helmed by The Descent's Neil Marshall.

This def has potential, looking forward to it.

Starman

Pros:

* The actor looks the goods
* "Hannibal" proves that NBC can good great adult programs, even without swearing or sexuality
* Neil Marshall is directing the pilot. He's a genre fan and (imo) a good director

Cons:

* Is this going to be set in America or the UK? I don't have that much interest in the US adventures of Constantine (even the big storyline where Constantine travelled around the US wasn't that great, imo) ... it's just become a supernatural version of "Elementary". The UK is pretty much it's own character in the comics.
* Chas is being played by an American (but at least the guy is a good actor)
* Papa Midnite is chief villain? Not a very epic opponent.
* David Goyer has a hand in this and the guy is very hit-and-miss as a writer.

Podmark

He looks dead on, which is pretty cool.

I've never read Constantine but I think it could make a great TV show. Needs a strong actor in the lead though.

Unlike the movie,Matt Ryan looks totaly like Johny. Now since DC decided to ride the comic to TV wave Arrow created,is it also set in Arrow universe like Flash?

Starman

According to Goyer, Constantine won't crossover with Flash or Arrow.

Thats too bad actually  :( .I was hoping for a DC-TV universe.

Sorry, are they going to dye his hair blonde?
Is he British? Is he going to cross over with Swamp Thing?
Is Negral secretly going to be in the background?
Will it please be based zero percent on the movie?

Starman

UnkoMan:

Yes ... he's dirty blonde
Yes ... he's British but played by a Welsh actor. No to Swamp Thing.
Negral has been cast, so presumably yes
Hopefully, yes.

Spade:

I think having Constantine cross over with Arrow and Flash would be too much ... you'd have superhero science AND magic, which just opens the door too wide on these shows.

HarryTrotter

Thats what I thought, but I also thought that they would go for a whole TV-universe.

I have no doubts this will be a great ride.

That teaser just sold me 200% for the new series and it's first season will finally wash away the bad taste of the Constantine movie out of my brain.

Looks awesome! As soon as it was announced I thought it could def work, and the trailer reassured me.

JeyNyce

The show looks great, but there's something about it being on NBC that bugs me.  I have a feeling that NBC is going to do the show justice.  Maybe it's me.......

How about he's not allowed to smoke on the show? That's so lame I mean I understand the reason but it just makes me angry.
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

If I were to have watched a supposed "leaked" trailer.  I would say that it was really great.  I would also say that the name-dropping and visual easter eggs were fun for a true DC fan.

I'm not saying that i did find a leaked version ;) but if I did.  I loved it.

Starman

An acquaintance of mine who totally isn't me noticed that while you don't see Constantine smoke, you do see him butt out a cigarette as if he'd just finished one, as well as play around with a cigarette lighter.

HarryTrotter

We already discussed Flash,so we can disscus this too.
That was FREAKING AWESSOME.
A familiar mask makes a cameo.
Kinda reminds me on Supernatural, expecialy if they start the roadtrip around US.
Im willing to bet that Gotham will be leaked very soon...

Cool, it's a nice workaround. Real deal would have been better ofc, but that's something.

Sounds cool, I was a fan of Supernatural for first 5 seasons then I lost interest. This has potential to be better.

An acquaintance of mine is gonna see this ASAP and I'm gonna post my....I mean his...impressions.

HarryTrotter

TV doesnt want smoking to be percived as cool,so they avoid it.And lets face it,IT DOES look cool when John does it.Still,If thats the biggest complaign we have, then all is good.

The creator of Supernatural, Eric Kripke, actually wanted John Constantine to appear on Supernatural and, when he got denied by DC Comics, ended up basing the look of Castiel on Constantine - he wears Constantine's exact clothing from the comics. The Ace of Winchesters most probably inspired The Colt, an Old-West-made, demon-killing pistol seen in the TV series Supernatural. Kripke's main characters Sam and Dean also have Winchester for their surnames.

HarryTrotter

I still liked 1 episode of Constantine over 1 season of Supernatural. But Im saying people will notice similarity.

Starman

Yeah but that's not really Constantine's fault ... Supernatural, Buffy, Grimm, The Dresden Files and all those other occult investigator TV shows have borrowed a lot from the "Hellblazer" comic over the 25 years it was being published.

As I said, the guy who created Supernatural was basically writing the show as if it was in the same fictional universe as "Hellblazer" for the first couple of seasons. Unless they set Constantine in England and gave the show a more adult raring, it was always going to be compared to Supernatural.

FYI, I don't like Supernatural and I think John Constantine is waaaaaaaaaay more interesting than Sam and Dean.

HarryTrotter

Agreed.Constantine IS waaaay more interesting.
Any chance for Swamp Thing, what do you think?

Starman

I'm not sure how they'd do Swamp Thing and his powers on a TV budget without him looking like he did in those 80s Swamp Thing movies ... but it's possible, I guess. They did show Dr Fate's helmet, so other DC characters might appear.

Then again, it seems like a waste of Swamp Thing to just have him in a cameo. He's an amazing comic book character but I don't know if he really works onscreen.

trebean

Maybe have him run against John and the Green is conveniently weakened reducing his form (Like let's say his face being just moss on a rock), and in the conclusion, show his complete form. He could be a mixture of puppetry and CGI.
