Not a flame war starter but a serious question...

I owned a Xbox 360 second gen years ago and it died on me (RROD) and I bought a PS3 soon after. I admit that I bought the PS3 solely for God of War 3 and the BlueRay function. I was also sold on this powerful Cell processor I was reading and hearing about. Truthfully though, it doesn't seem any different than Xbox's processor.

Lately it seems that more game designers are favoring the Xbox 360 over the PS3, maybe because its easier to make games for? Anyway, the Skyrim problem with PS3 has me really thinking about trading in my PS3 for credit and getting an Xbox again. Several guys in my IT class are telling me that the Xbox is much better than it used to be, it looks better, its quieter, runs cooler and no more red rings of death. So here I sit on the fence, wondering what I should do. Any suggestions?

No, that RRoD issue still exist. It might not be as frequent, but it's still there. Just heard of someone I associate with getting another one, so if he buys another X-box, it'll be numero cinco for him.

Really? So even the new Xboxs are getting the RROD? I thought that was a thing of the past. Downloading the patch for the PS3 right now, and man is it huge. Weighs in at 93MB. Hopefully this will fix that awful lag problem.

From what I understand, it's nowhere near as frequent, so I'm thinking you should be safe should you decide to switch. Also, it's no longer called "Red Rings of Death" but instead "Red Dot of Death," so I guess the "No more RRoD" statement is completely accurate. :D

But I will say this, from what I've noticed, X-box was always favored over the other consoles in this generation with PS3 falling in second and Wii being last. Sony and Microsoft also cater to separate audiences with some overlap, so I think that plays into designer choices a lot as well. That's not to say that PS3 doesn't finally have a bunch of great games to choose from, but X-box had and maintained the lead in that area from the beginning.

As for skyrim, from what I've read, every version of that game had some sort of issue from graphic downsizing to constant crashing, so that wasn't unique to PS3 at all. Seems they should have done a little more testing on that one after the mid point.

To be honest, the PS3 is a better machine, spec wise.  It's more powerful than the 360.  The 360 on the other hand has better games and is easier to make games for.  I have the 360 because of the games and the fact that I had the first xbox (I always rooted for the underdog).  I would take a look at the games each system have and decide from there.

About Skyrim - Get it for the PC.  Not only for looks, but you can mod the heck out of that game.

My pc is a dinosaur and my ps3 can run circles around it. So getting Skyrim for the pc is out of the question. I have read about ps3 being the more powerful machine, but no game developer has seemed to be able to tap into it's potential. Mostly because of the difficulty of writing programming code for it from what I have read. The ps3 may be the more powerful machine but it doesn't mean anything if game developers do not optimize their games for it. From everything I am reading on the boards, Xbox out performs the ps3 with Skyrim, despite ps3 being technically more powerful.

Well the ps3 version of skyrim was just patched... still waiting on the xbox and pc patches...should be later this week.  i hope it resolves all of the rand CTD issues i've been having with the game,  and sometimes pink textures.

Oh, Flame War eh? I'll KILL YOU!

Er, I mean to say that I've always understood it to be that each machine has different respective strengths.  A lot of games which are common to both consoles can have the edge on the 360, as this is the easier one to code for and so the one the game is primarily built on, then ported to the PS3 (speaking in broad generalities here, and it was more prevalent back in the day).  However, PS3 tends to have the better exclusives (again, in general), and if you want to see games which make the most of the PS3 then this is where to look (e.g. the Uncharted games for example)

With respect to Skyrim, my understanding was between the two versions, one ran more smoothly while the other had nicer textures.  Or something.  The main problem with the PS3 version (as I understand it) is that there is agame breaking bug which slows everything to a crawl once you've played it long enough.  Which doesn't sound ideal, if I'm honest

I installed the patch and it is indeed better but not totally fixed yet. I still get lag, but not like before. I definitely don't want this thread to be a xbox vs ps3 thing either. I am just taking notice of developers tendencies to favor the box and port to the ps3. I think I have decided though to switch over to the box not just for Skyrim but several games that I want to play are box exclusives. I just remember how angry I was when I got the RROD on my old box a couple years ago, and fear it happening again.

Just remember as much as I love Skyrim, it's a buggy game

Mr. Hamrick

have said it once and will say it again about the RRoD... it can usually be fixed.

Well if you wont start a flame war, I will: everyone is wrong and pc is better.  ;)

As for console failures I'm sorry to hear your box died but those are really infrequent.

captmorgan72

I have a pc lugaru, but my ps3 blows it out of the water when it comes to gaming. It all depends on your hardware, but your right of course. If you have a nice gaming computer, it will always beat consoles.

Are these guys faster than Microsoft, for fixing the box Hamrick? Fifty bucks to fix it doesn't seem to bad to me. Just wondering how long it would take. I tried fixing my old box following a guide off the net, but it only worked for a month or so, until the RRoD returned. How long is their fix guaranteed for?

Velocity

Honestly, I've had way more problems with PS3s than 360s. I must just be lucky.

Yes, they are pretty fast.  Warranty is 60 days, I think but it might be 90, I forget.
