The Hitman

Well, one of these threads pop up about every 6 months or so (and, oddly enough, usually by me) so it's time again to ask... what do youall listen to? I'll start with my list (in kinda-alphabetical, it's easier):

The Adventures of Flash Gordon - Old-timey radio show goodness.
After the Jump! - My old friend Andy and his college buddies do this "Pop Culture" blog and podcast. Originally a gaming show called Pod-Shot.
Around Comics - Good show about comics, about ready to end.
Film Junk and it's spinoff, Cantankerous - Film Junk does movies, Cantankerous is the ramblings of a 40-something Asian-Canadian.
Chin Stroker vs. Punter - Two Brits argue about movies.
CineCultania - Two Aussies argue about movies (can you see the trend?).
Comic Book Outsiders - More about comic books.
Coolness Roundup - Tech news.
Critical Hit - A sprawling D&D 4th Ed. dungeon crawl. By the guys at Major Spoilers.
Double Feature - Movie Reviews.
Family Movie Night - A guy and his 8 yr. old daughter review movies. Surprisingly good. They've recently covered Krull, Crocodile Dundee, and The Dark Crystal, so it's not all kids stuff.
Geek Out Loud - A monthly pop culture show.
Geek Syndicate - More comic book and "geek culture" stuff.
Major Spoilers - Probably my favorite of the lot, but I may be biased. Comic book news and reviews. I liked the site and show so much, I ended up working for them.
Mondo Movie - Lesser-know film reviews.
Movie Meltdown - Movie reviews and news.
ShowShow - Movie reviews... kinda. Really funny if you're tired (which I usually am).
SModcast - Kevin Smith, Scott Mosier and friends ramble on about nothing in particular. Very vulgar.
TrekCast - Take a wild guess.
Super Future Friends - Two gals make fun of old Legion of Super-Heroes comics.
Tell'Em Steve-Dave! - Spin-off of SModcast, Kev Smith's friends from New Jersey ramble on about nothing in particular. Very vulgar with heavy metal music.
Tenth Wonder - A show about NBC's Heroes. A favorite of the guy who plays Matt Parkman.
The Big Honkin' Show - Spin-off of Geek Out Loud. Also funny.
The Big Red Podcast - TV news.
The Gentleman's Guide to Midnight Cinema - Movies.
The Movie Club Podcast - Spin-off of Film Junk. Cult movie discussions.
The Nerdist - Chirs Hardwick talks with various comedians about stuff.
The Shadow Podcast - Old-timey radio show goodness.
The Stan and The Man Show - This one takes some explanation. I actually do the pre-and post production of this show, as well as answer phone calls while on-air. You can sometimes hear me in the background chuckling at some of the things they say. I don't particularly agree with 90% of what they say, but they pay me, so I do what they say. It's political stuff, so be warned.
The Toronto, Ontario Mo And Glo(ria) Show - Spin-off of SModcast, Kev Smith's friend from Canada and his mom ramble on about nothing in particular. Very vulgar and awkward.
Tweet Me Harder - Two webcomic creators say ridiculous things.
War Rocket Ajax - Indie comic book news.

Looking back on this list, I've come to the conclusion that I think I have a problem.

Mr. Hamrick

I wholeheartedly recommend the Pendant Audio Podcast series of Batman: Ace of Detectives and Catwoman:Queen of Thieves.  The series for Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Martian Manhunter are not bad either.  However, the last "crossover" was not that good.

I also have a few friends in bands who have podcasts: The Cruxshadows and One Eyed Doll.  Neither band updates their podcast that often.

Gonna check out The Shadow Podcast.

If I can figure out a good way to do it (and can get some scripts together), would love to do a podcast radio serial that was a mystery noir/crime thriller.

I've really been enjoying Critical Hit.  In fact, it finally inspired me to put together an RPG with some of my friends using RPTools.  I've also been really excited to fill my MP3 player with old Shadow and Green Hornet radio drama!  Now I can add Flash Gordon too?  So awesome!

I don't listen to many podcasts but I watch a lot of the Revision 3 podcast shows,
Tekzilla - tech news, hints, and reviews
Diggnation - the "best of Digg" type show
The Totally Rad Show - hilarious movie, game, and other reviews
iFanboy - comic books stuff
Bytejacker - indie games
just check out revision3.com if you don't already know about them.

Kenn

I don't listen to the stuff as much as I should, but I help in the production of much of the stuff at http://www.twerponline.net/ .  Mostly voice acting and some script editing.   I also recruited another oldtime FF person, Lightning Man, for his IMWAN 4 stuff.
My Amazing Woman - A Romantic Comedy of Super Heroic Proportions.

Also what Lightning Man and Kenn-X have been doing lately.

I'm a fan of old time radio shows (especially the Green Hornet and the Shadow, though I also like a few comedies such as Fibber McGee and Molly), so I should really check those podcasts out.

And I have a few concepts I've created that would work as radio shows.

I was just thinking about this a while back.  Why don't we have a podcast?  What would we talk about?

We almost did once.  I think the blogs sorta' cover this ground, though.

I think you answered that one yourself, Jey.  What would we talk about?  Some of us would probably just simply start arguments or argue with one another.

ALTHOUGH!

We have a "Forum Wide Event Planning Forum" that could probably be used to gather scripts and stuff.  Would a few serial podcasts be something worth doing over there.

I second Pendant Productions DC comics shows, although Martian Manhunter's been canceled.  Some of their other stuff is good too, especially Red Sands, a noir detective miniseries set in England of all places.

Decoder Ring Theatre is another good one.  They sound like a professional broadcast, even though it's a free podcast.  The writing, acting, and sound effects are all great, and they do a lot of it like the old shows did.  They have two main shows, Red Panda, an original superhero show, and Black Jack Justice, a detective show.

As a Civilization fan, I like to listen to Polycast and their Modcast secondary show, both about Civ 4.  There's also a Civ Rev podcast.  The various hosts are quite fun to listen to.

I also listen to the free podcast for one of the major political talk shows and the Christian drama series Unshackled.  Even if you're not interested in the actual subject matter of the latter, you might be interested that they still make them the way they did in 1950 when the show started--live recordings in front of a studio audience, so it's interesting on a strictly historical basis, although the episodes are now online as well as on air.

There are a few other things I listen to here and there, but those are the major ones.

I don't listen to any podcasts regularly, and the podcasts I do listen to are pretty much updated intermittently - one I think even went six months between episodes one time, so I actually thought it had ended.

The two I check out the most (neither has been updated since December, sadly):

http://www.tikibartv.com/ - Video podcast. Basically only has a plot as a way to lead up to giving you the recipe for an alcoholic drink. Fairly entertaining, even so - must be, because I watch it despite the fact I don't drink alcohol or liquor AT ALL.

http://goldenagecomics.libsyn.com/ - The Golden Age of Comic Books. Each episode focuses on one or two (usually just one) Golden Age comic book characters, and the host usually talks about the character's origin issue and gives a little more history on the character.

Well, I've been really enjoying listening to the Shadow and Green Hornet on my drives back and forth from work, when doing the dishes, etc., but I'm running out!  I've still got a good number of Shadow episodes left, but sadly, there were only a tithe of the Green Hornet shows posted there.  Does anyone have any clue where others might be found?  I love the Shadow, but my favorite is probably the Green Hornet.

Also, I've checked out Decoder Ring Theatre tonight, and thank you for posting that, Cat.  I listened to one of their sci-fi Showcase shows and a Red Panda episode, and while the sci-fi one was pretty terrible (with pretty goofy writing and a voice actor channeling Shatner on a particularly bad day), the Red Panda one was a lot of fun.  I think that detective style stories lend themselves to radio much better than sci-fi.  After all, a fistfight is a bit easier to narrate through exposition than a dogfight.

:EDIT: Ahh, I found a few more Green Hornet episodes: http://www.otr.net/?p=ghrt
Unfortunately, they use Realplayer.

Hey guys, other than Green Hornet and the Shadow, what classic Radio Dramas were really good?

Hey guys, other than Green Hornet and the Shadow, what classic Radio Dramas were really good?

Box 13, Dragnet (yes, Dragnet started out on radio), Gunsmoke (ditto, but NONE of the radio cast were on the tv show, though), and Bold Venture. *Maybe* Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar (that's one show, not two).

Box 13 starred Alan Ladd. Bold Venture starred Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

If you want an anthology, look up Escape, Suspense and Mercury Theater (aka Mercury Theater On The Air), which was Orson Welles. The infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast was actually a part of it, if I remember right.

Archive.org has a lot of good radio shows (look under `Old Time Radio'. Go browse through what they've got and see what trips yer trigger.

I know you didn't ask for comedy recommendations, but in case you or someone else who sees this needs some:

The Bickersons (with Don Ameche and Francis Langford), Fibber McGee and Molly, Duffy's Tavern and Jack Benny. Amos & Andy is also pretty good, if you don't mind the fact it has racial stereotypes and is definitely not PC.

(And I'm not a fan of Realplayer, either)

the fantastic four from the 70's was a good radio show. and the star wars trilogy starring mark hammil was very good.
