I've been reading the books lately and have come to like the world and its characters.  Now, I hear there will be a John Carter movie.  I know we have some really movie savvy guys here.  What's the prognosis?  Will the movie makers make a movie worth watching, or will they ruin it?

I don't know. I just watched the trailer here;

As with a lot of things, theres parts I liked and didn't like. I've read the books more than one time, starting back in the 70's, and have been looking forward to this since I first heard about it. 1st impression is that the actor doesn't match my personal image of John Carter. I always pictured someone more like Clooney, Jackman or Mel Gibson back in his Road Warrior days. I lked the way Marvel drew him back in the 70's

There's already a B movie out where they updated him to a US soldier in the middle east - no immortal southern gentleman. I notice in the trailer there's no mention of the wild west background.

I hope they follow the original background and don't ruin it with an "update"

Edit   - justread some more on the site and they do mention  the civil war background. They also mention the Marvel comics series out now. I read the 1st issue and it wasn't bad.

Tawodi Osdi,
Considering how long the film as been in and out of the pipeline...
not including the attempts at an animated version...

I don't really have all that high hopes for it.  Then again, it IS Pixar so who knows.

Read all the mars books and comics since the 80s. Will I go see it yes. But like any movie based on a book or comic I will judge it on it's own. Cant wait to see it .  :thumbup:

I think it looks pretty cool.  I'm not one that thinks movies must replicate the books, but I don't like them to deviate too far.  I'm excited to see it.

I'm willing to give it a chance... but I do wish the "red men" were really red and not just red tats.  How hard would it be to just redden their skin a little?

I've been wanting this to become a movie forever....they had better not screw it up.  The movie LOOKS good, but from what I can tell, it is only tangentially related to the book.

As an old school Burroughs fan from childhood, I really enjoyed it and found it closer to Burroughs actual work than almost any movie ever done about his stuff. There were a few modinizations and liberties taken but nothing I fould detracting or offensive to the original stories.

Unfortunately it ssems that its losing money  big time so I guess no sequel.

Apparently many of the great unwashed out there think it is a rip off Star Wars etc rather than realizing  the original books as inspiration for the more recent stuff.
