I saw this a while ago and thought, why couldn't they make The Incredibles 2???  Cars wasn't all that great.  SIGH!  Superheroes are the "IN" thing now.

I was actually much more impressed by cars then i was the Incredibles. I felt they didn't ever show us true superhero type things. It all seemed too 007 to me. I think the musical score had a lot to do with that though. I will say however, cars 2 isn't looking to good.

Cars is the worst Pixar movie - by a lot.  Why are they doing a sequel though?  Easy - it made a lot of money, and its toys sell really well, even now several years after its release.

Bah!  Why is the right question.  The Incredibles is much, MUCH better than Cars.

The only Pixar movie I haven't even seen. And it doesn't look like any of the other CGI cartoon makers are going to step up this year either. Winnie the Pooh is the only animated movie I have any desire to see and I can't even admit that without seeming really weird but the animation looks so good!
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

Sorry, but I liked Cars.  It's more of a kids thing than other Pixar movies, though.

I agree, Cars is one of my favorite Pixar movies.  Talavar is right, though.  Plus, making cash cow sequels is what Disney does.  This really shouldn't be a surprise.

That being said, an Incredibles sequel would be awesome.

I'm part of the Cars was terrible team.  I would rather see a sequel to Incredibles or Bolt.  IMO Cars really fell apart when it could have gone in a better direction....sure that's more mature talk and maybe the cute cars are popular with kids....but this is my opinion.

Not only does that intro from Sheryl Crow psych me up every time I hear it, I can watch that movie every time my kids put it on. Even the end of the race was great, It sent a real message about doing the right thing.
My kids Put that on every chance they get. Those toys are still selling strong also.  Over Xmas the 20 pack car set was hard to find.   Chalk me up for seeing Cars 2.

I didn't actively DISLIKE Cars, but by the end of the film I felt like my time could have been better employed elsewhere.  It's not a bad movie, but it is in rarefied company.

Interesting my kids didn't like it either. we've got most of the others on DVD , but nobody wanted cars. I know my kids aren't normal kids though.

I liked Cars... the first dozen times.  It has heart, even now.

We have the DVD and my little boys are still into it.  The older ones are bored with it... but I guarantee they'd watch a Cars 2.

And that's why.

Judging by people I know with kids, Cars as an IP is much easier to merchandise.  Kids have been playing with toy cars as far as I can remember. Back it up with Mouse Power and you literally have a licence to print money.

The biggest question of why Pixar/Disney rushed into doing a Cars 2 sequel before anything else.. they are on a deadline.

Both the sequel and a Disney California state-of-the-art amusement park ride (which is the biggest land project they have done in decades) open in the Summer of 2012.

While that may be a factor, Pixar has stated many times that they still have freedom to do the stories they want to do and only do sequels if they come up with a story they feel very strongly about.

Cars was a decent movie (though I do rrreeeaaalllyyy prefer the Incredibles), my son (11 months old) loves it and will calm down to watch it when he's in a hyper mood. Hopefully, the sequal will have the same effect.

oldmanwinters

As a hardcore NASCAR fan, I absolutely love the story of Cars, yet I think it's probably one of the weaker properties for a sequel and I think it could end up as Pixar's first critical bust.  I really wanted to see The Incredibles storyline expanded upon.  However, the new Cars 2 trailer actually has my interest... and it is Pixar... so I'm optimistic.

MJB

I heard they were making this movie quite a while ago so the trailer didn't surprise me.

Why Cars 2, you ask? Well as others have said it's quite popular with the kiddies. They still make tons of Cars based toys/merch & it sells well. The fact is I'm not the targeted demographic. I'm not a fan of NASCAR, nor cars in general. I'm also out of the age range they are probably shooting for. Saying that if my youngest son wanted to see this I would probably take him to it.

Oh & since we are on the subject of Pixar... Is it just me or does Pixar/Disney have a tough time making a trailer to these movies? What I mean by that is I don't think I have ever seen a trailer for a Pixar movie that was appealing. They make the movie look awful but when you see the flick it's usually a good movie. *shrugs* Probably just me.

Amen to that, brother.  I want all FOUR of mine to sit still for it.

Bit of a necro-post, but I saw this article today: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/disney-cars-has-crossed-8-99438

For those not feeling like clicking through - the 8 billion dollars in Cars merchandise is why Cars is getting a sequel ahead of worthier Pixar properties.  Cars only came out in 2006....

JeyNyce

I was at the Disney store in NYC and they have a Build your own Cars section.  You can take McQueen or Nater and mod them.  It's almost like Build-a-Bear, but with CARS!  I understand why they're doing this, but I would have prefer Incredibles 2

But Incredibles 2 would make no sense.  It's not really a superhero story, it's the story of a family coming together--who just happen to be superheroes.  That story is done and I see no way to continue it without it being forced.

Cars is more silly, and you can always continue silliness.

The ending to Cars just really sucked steel...bearings.  I hope Cars 2 gets it right.

I thought the first Cars was easily one of Pixars worst movies. That said, the spy stuff actually kind of makes me want to see the sequel.

And an Incredibles sequel would be an easy story to tell- the story of the return of the supers - led by the Incredibles- and how the world copes.  Just need to widen the scope a bit.
