Maybe it's me, but it looks too bright.  I was hoping it would be dark like the fan film:

I would kill to see a Green Hornet film in that same vein...instead of whatever dreck Seth Rogan is going to shovel at us.

:EDIT: As a matter of fact, they should just have given those guys a 100,000 bucks or so and seen what they could come up with.  That is one of the coolest fan films I've ever seen.  It's well made, well choregraphed, and well acted (what there is of it).

Honestly if it was not for the director I would not be all that interested, using "real" directors for comic book movies has really helped make the movies credible and few directors are as nutty as Michel Gondry. I'm a sucker for music video directors in general, but while most people here wont recognize the name you might recognize "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Science of sleep" (I have not seen "be kind") but all his movies have this amazing "hand made" quality and a ton of super subtle computer effects and smart transitions. Like if he ever did Doctor Strange for example... man... but this might be a chance for him to hold back and make a more disciplined movie.

So he's pretty much nothing and Kato is everything?

BentonGrey

Urg.......this looks like about half a decent movie wrapped up in a whole lot of stupidity and suck.

Looks to me like Seth Rogan will go down in infamy as the man who killed the Green Hornet.

Okay, we all know Kato is the more dangerous of the two but c'mon... I can't take seriously a Green Hornet who --

Spoiler
shoots himself with his own gas gun.

We didn't need a Green Hornet who's his own comedy relief, we didn't need another superhero parody, and I have zero interest now.

I agree with you, Bluebard.  Green hornet is a not silly, funny, nor should it be full of comedic moment, and the GH should not be an idiot dependant on Kato for every little thing.  I don't mind them beefing up Kato's role, but not the point where's he's the only one with any brains, common sense, or any real heroism.

Green Hornet should have feel similar to the new Batman Begins--a dark hero that the police see as a vigilante but is really out to do good.  The whole "protecting the law by breaking it" think I don't like much either.

i'd be ok if they were new, made up characters for THAT movie.not the green hornet.GH should be taken as a serious movie. not like that.

I remember there was a crossover between the old green hornet tv series and the old Batman.  Batman suddenly became a serious show for that one episode because even the Batman producers knew that you had to take the Hornet seriously.

I liked it. DIfferent time for the character. The acting looks good, the Black Beauty is gorgeous and action scenes look good. Somewhere in the movie, Rogan will become the awesome hero you want. Just not right out the box. Ironman is a serious character too, yet they were able to incorporate lots of comedy into the films. I think this will work out fine.

I agree with Thanoson.  I think (and hope) that the new version of the character will become more serious as the movie progresses.  Because it is a great character arc for a guy who is a buffoonish playboy who has never taken anything seriously to become a hero who is quite serious about what he does.  The other benefit to a character transitioning like that is that it allows Rogen to play a more serious character but still show the comedic sense early on that fans expect from him.  By the end, Rogen is easily more accepted in serious roles.

BentonGrey

You know, not all comedy is created equal.  In the Iron Man movies, there is certainly room for humor, and they are very funny films in their way, but while some of it may be wacky (I laugh myself silly every time his robot sprays him with the fire extinguisher), it is of a different stripe than what I've seen exemplified in this trailer.  The scene of Rogen shooting himself with his own gas-gun reminds me very strongly of Old School, when Frank the Tank shoots himself with the tranquilizer dart.  You have two very different schools of film making here.  One who can tell an exciting, moving story, and still take time to laugh, and another whose primary purpose is to be stupidly funny.  That is, after all, Rogen's pedigree, such as it is.

Bruce Lee made the old show, he's dead. It makes sense to take it into a different direction. Seth Rogan's good movies are good, this one may not be funny enough is my only worry. Also Cameron Diaz sucks. Overall though: It looks awesome.
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

Bet you they don't go that route.  Sure, he's going to get action and look good doing it.  So did Steve Carrell as Maxwell Smart in that movie reboot.  That's what stunt doubles are for.  But I bet he still comes off as an idiot when it's all over, somehow taking credit for everything Kato does.

I agree with BG.  You can have funny in a 'serious' movie, in the same way that there were funny moments in Iron Man 2.  But to play it as a parody/comedy, no.  I would have flat walked out of the theater if Tony Stark had been played as a total idiot who can't tie his own shoes without falling down or the if armor had malfunctioned in goofy ways.

They aren't getting my money, unless it's a rental.  And probably not even then.

I hope the trailer is misleading or at least heavy handed in the editing about Seth's take on Britt Reid.  It does appear to make Britt appear a bit of a buffoon at first.  I can see what they're trying to do with the comedy - like stated before w/ Iron Man and the robot with the extinguisher.  It seems they just don't pull it off as well.  I'm hoping there's more to it that we just don't see.

Seems they kept certain parts of Kevin Smith's script as well.  Not sure if its an update or a legacy thing though.  The trailer seems to hint at both --- so I'm a little confused about how it starts so to speak.

The sidekick as the real/better/whatnot hero thing isn't unique to this movie, let alone this take of the Green Hornet.  Lets face it, Kato has been and will always be the more interesting hero to watch in the fights.  Keep in mind, Kato, since the beginning radio serials has always been the inventor of the Black Beauty, the gas & gasguns... thats not new to this movie.  So nothing is being taken away from Britt and being given to Kato to make him seem less heroic.

Also, the Green Hornet "breaking" the law to uphold it is not a new concept for just this movie.  That's always been how the Green Hornet operated, undercover as a feared mobster himself.

Unlike other recent features of older characters, while it may poke fun --- it still seems to have respect for the source material and is sticking to it for the most part (I'll have to hunt for any Lone Ranger easter eggs.)  I'll still go see it --- keep my expectations in check and hope to have a good time.

Looking at the trailer again and it's not as bad as I thought it was.  He's not a idiot, but a "kid" who likes to party and now he wants to do good.  He has all these new "toys" and he's like WOW!, I want to play with everything!

I'm afraid I just see Old School with masks.

Maybe Pineapple Express with masks and fedoras, but not Old School.  Not by far.  They've already said this is action with comedy.  Not a comedy with action.

On top of that, they're saying along with the 3D bit will be something called "Kato-vision" which is supposed to change how fight scenes are viewed, like bullet-time was for Matrix.  We'll find out more about it when the con hits San Diego.

I think the trailer was just top heavy with the comedy so to speak.  Lets not forget Bales dip into the fountain with 2 models in Batman or Downeys booty shaking, wine bottle blasting and give me a fat beat to beat up my pal bit in Iron-Man.  They weren't in the trailers, but were in the movies.

Let me remind you again... Kato designed the gas guns.  When Britt picks up the gas gun, its his first time handling it.  Played for comedy?  Sure.  Mockery?  No.  'Cides, I thought the bit where he exhales the gas out his nose when he is passed out was actually a nice detail and is what really made me laugh.

Considering they're not updating the costumes or Black Beauty to something "hip" (And I'm so happy about the Black Beauty cause for me... its better than the Batmobile)... not making major changes to the character (Remember, Kato said his father was "complex" for all we know --- this may be a passing of the torch story which is whats going on in the Kevin Smith comic for Dynamite.) I have faith in them.  Plenty of respect for the IP still.

Will it be Batman Begins?  No.  But its not going to be Old School with masks either.

Sorry RTT, I've been pretty good at remaining hopeful on comic movies lately, and there have been a lot of great ones in the last few years.  I am a huge Hornet fan, and while I was really excited when I heard they were making this movie, I utterly despise Seth Rogen, and not only as an actor.  All of the trailers I've seen, including the new ones, still have too much of him acting like him in them for me to hold out any hope.  You're staying hopeful, and I can respect that, but I just passionately wish that this movie were in other hands.
