First thing I saw when I got on the computer after I woke up. What a way to start the day. :(

I'm really going to miss "The Rest of the Story". Even if someone else takes over, it just won't be the same.

It seems like he's been on the air since forever... I was first exposed to his unique speech patterns on the old AFRTS/FEN (Armed Forces Radio & Television Service/Far East Network) over twenty years ago as a young member of what the US Air Force used to call its "shadow audience". I'd like to think that my current facility with the English language is due in large part to their broadcasts.

One of the classic "radio voices" the public unfortunately seems to have taken for granted in recent years.

I haven't heard him since I was a kid, but I always enjoyed his show.

Paul Harvey . . . Good.  Bye.

You just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake
And the science gets done, and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive."

From the time I was in grade school, my dad used to take me to work with him during the Summers and on school holidays that working people don't get off. Paul Harvey's news was on in the mornings and, often, we'd catch his "The Rest Of The Story" segments on the way home. Paul Harvey just came on in the background while dad was explaining how we were going to rig a hydraulic lift, or whether I was ready to hook up a three-phase motor on my own, or something like that. I never really thought much about it.

Many years went by and I had no idea Paul Harvey was even still on the air (he wasn't on any of the stations I listened to in college or grad school). Then, I was at a lab in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a couple months when finishing school and Paul Harvey was syndicated there. All those memories of riding around in that pickup truck as a kid with my dad came flooding back. I have to say, it was pretty cool. And, I am pretty sure my dad was surprised to get a call from me just to travel down memory lane.  ^_^

I will miss that pleasant nostalgia when he is no longer on the air. Good luck on Page Five, Mr. Harvey...
