I've heard of Space Empires V, but most seem to agree that Galactic Civilizations is superior.  You might like to try that one if you haven't before.

can you mod GalCiv? SE5 is really fun to mod. Actually mods are what makes it so awesome. Anyone can do them really.

Very much so. In fact, the latest expansion lets you add completely new tech trees (each civ has its own) if you want to.

hmm... I'll look into it but most people I've talked to said they thought it was kinda boring....

Gal Civ is great but easy to break... I made some ships that I could crank out cheap and spam and I ended up wiping out the big badguy civilization with little effort. Great game though and I think there are a lot of mods and expansions for it.
