First Look at Brian Austin Green as Metallo (http://www.superherohype.com/news/supermannews.php?id=8621)

Brian Austin Green looks so different now. Anyway, I like the look. Could be cool.

Different, but for an earlier first experiment, it works.

My main criteria is, is it immediately recognizable as the original character?  Yep.

Actually , generally I like  "Smallville's" take on characters ( certainly tends to be better than current DCU IMO) just considerate a seriously alternate history but Clark really really ought to actually be Superman by now IMO.

The wings look fake, and it's way too obvious that he's on a wire, but the costume's surprisingly faithful to the comics.  I'm also pleased that they're sticking to the JSA as the older, formerly established hero team.

While I love the fact that they are staying comic faithful....in that pic it looks sorta' terrible.  I'd like to see a better image before I pass judgment though.

I think that was really lame of this show to get so excruciatingly terrible that I, a dedicated fan, had to completely give up on it halfway through the "lana R a witch!" season and then have a JSA movie which looks cool that I can't watch because I'm 4 and a half seasons behind. Did the show really get as better as it looks?

nope. as usual with smallville, there is one episode out of three that is worth watching, we still have to deal whith uninteresting side-plot. the "green arrow lose faith in him" just ended and it was excruciatingly long. the actors are still not that good (only zod is cool this season), the writing didn't really improve in 9 year so no surprise here.
by the way, if you're missing the cool episode because you're afraid you won't get what the rest is about -> read season description on wikipedia/any other website you like and then watch the good episode, it's really not complicated (you can sumarize a season in two-three sentence, they just dilute the story in a lot of episode where nothing happen) and the few that are worth watching are really worth watching
this season we had the metallo episode and...yep that was it, but now we have the JSA specialcoming so that will make 3 episode worth watching out of 12 if i'm correct (so 1 out of 4, not a bad ratio so far).
i should really do "Smallville: The Only Worth-Watching Edition" with edited episode (cut every last bit of filler dialogue and lame sub-plot...)
If you like old school reference, season 8 had a Legion of Superhero episode, and it was pretty enjoyable too.

btw don't go "if you don't like it don't watch it" on me, i'm a fan since episode one and haven't missed any episode since, but that doesn't mean that i think the show is good.

i guess i should explain a little  :P
every season of smallville has some highlight point, some moment worth watching for the superman fan i am. And if i have to sit through 22 boring episode just to see one that is interesting, i'll do it.
For example last episode (lois flashback to her trip to the futur) there was exactly one momet that i found cool: when big bad guy said to lois "your Blur is dead" we had a shot of Clark's shirt whith the superman shield hang to a pole, exactly in the same manner as the superman cape was hanging in "The death of superman". Boom, 40 minute of a uninteresting episode forgotten, just because they did one thing right. But i still think that there are too many "filler" episode, side-plot not well handled and bad acting.
So there you have it, i don't like this show but i'll be damn if i miss one episode.

I know exactly what you mean Trelau. It's like sitting through a terrible movie just because some actor you like is in it or Samuel L. Jackson says frell. The first 8 seasons are selling for 9.99 each for the next 3 hours on amazon and I'm kinda torn. I wouldn't buy all of them but I'd rather get the first seasons first but I'm more interested in seeing the more recent seasons. I'll probably just end up passing.

SMALLVILLE Absolute Justice PROMO! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATt_jYt3_AY)
I can't wait.  :banghead:

Source link (http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/01/19/smallville-annette-otoole-returns-as-martha/)
QuoteProducers are still working out the exact timing of Martha's reappearance, but a Smallville insider tells me it'll most likely fall during May sweeps. That same source hints that the mother-son reunion will be rocked by an "unexpected surprise" or two. O'Toole last appeared in season 6 when Martha moved to Washington to become a U.S. senator.

They haven't been too explicit power wise so far, but here's what we know so far--

Spoiler

He's been show to turn invisible, attack by phasing through an opponent too invulnerable for Clark to even hurt, apparently shape shift, use telepathy to enter Clark's mind to help fight a telepathic parasite, and is very much vulnerable to fire.  He doesn't seem to have much in the way of invulnerability, as an alien possessing a little kid rather easily reached his chest and plucked out his heart, but can survive extreme damage such as that--he actually walked and flew around for some time with a gaping hole in his chest from that particular incident without showing any real effects.  He also has some sort of regeneration, although not in Earth's atmosphere.  He's shown using a gun because he lost all his powers when he flew Clark into the sun to restore him from near death.  MM is currently working as a police detective and informant for the super heroes.

Somehow my original reply disappeared, for no apparent reason.  Computers.

Anyhow, I thought it was quite well done and while I thought of it as an independent story, the addition of Amanda Waller and Checkmate could have interesting implications for the overall plot of the show as well as some interesting hints toward the end, namely

Spoiler
The some kind of apocalyptic event is coming for which Amanda needs both generations of heroes.  Somehow I get the feeling this might be more than just Zod and his minions.

Also loved all the nods toward the comics and am very glad that

Spoiler
MM has his powers back.  This ep also establishes that superspeed is among his powers.  The fx for intangibility were pretty well done too.

For all that I loved about the show, two things buggered me to no end.  And one of them something I am surprised that RT didn't hark on.

Spoiler
Why kill off Wesley Dodd?  Couldn't there have been some other scenes with him as Sandman?

the other...

Spoiler
Hawkman reminded me a great deal of Chris Benoit with the beard and hairstyle.  Plus the way they had him talking.  The voice and all.  Very surreal and a bit disturbing.  I doubt it was intentional but whoah!  For those who don't know Chris Benoit was the WWE wrestler who killed his family and himself.  He lived here in Atlanta but was originally from Canada.  I looked it up and both the actor (Michael Shanks) and Chris Benoit were both from Canada.  Shanks is from Vancouver and Benoit was born in Quebec but was billed from Calgary.

and one thing I am pondering

Spoiler
Will we be seeing more from these other heroes?  The way Amanda Waller was talking, these heroes are going to be in future episodes.  This means we will at least be seeing Alan Scott and Jay Garrick.  I wouldn't be surprised to see to some other DC Heroes too that have not been seen on the show.

I quite liked this, and other than one thing they really didn't mess with continuity in a way that got on my nerves too badly.

The one thing:
Spoiler

Squishing Sylvester Pemberton and Ted Knight together got on my nerves.  I can see why they did it, but I don't think it would've been that much more difficult to have the Knights included.

I thought Hawkman was letter perfect, Stargirl was very good, and Doctor Fate was ok, though I didn't really care for what they did to poor Kent Nelson.

As for the ending
Spoiler

Am I the only one who thought Waller was talking about Apokolips? Certainly, Darkseid would require an impressive number of heroes and/or villians to defeat him.

Short review: If Smallville was more like THIS every week, rather than the "Whiny Clark and his lame friends" show, I'd go back to watching it on a regular basis.

I agree that this ice guy was very lame. He shouldn't have been a problem for the guys he was fighting. Sandman should have been able to take him out himself. Fate getting killed made as much sense as MM still looking human after he lost his powers awhile back. I guess he kept shapeshifting and lost everything else.

And one of them something I am surprised that RT didn't hark on.

First,
Spoiler
because he is deceased in the comics.
Second, the story was about 1st generation characters passing the torch to next generation characters -
Spoiler
death is expected.
Third, just SEEING Sandman done so well, for as brief as it was, was enough for me.  Fourth, there is always Sandy as Sandman II.

Finally, I'm hoping the ratings were so through the roof --- we see more of the JSA and dare I say it --- I want a spin off.... NOW!

Only watched Smallville once before, the Krypto episode.  I found it amusing, decent and not insulting --- unlike I expected.  However I've read so much about it, I just was never interested to stick with it.  I wouldn't mind see more of it, if the quality keeps up with this episode.

I have a few complaints, but honestly... they're so minor, I just didn't care.  This is something I thought I'd NEVER see.  Seeing these characters in LIVE ACTION done so well... I just enjoyed myself all the way through it.  So much, yet so little... definitely made me want more.  I hope CW delivers.

It looks like the ratings were nearly twice normal for Smallville on Friday, and Smallville is already their highest rated Friday show ever, I believe. It's still pretty small ratings compared to some of the shows, but very, very good for CW.
Title: Re: Smallville season 9 ***SPOILERS***
Post by: Trelau on February 08, 2010, 02:56:04 AM
I would get too exited with the rating...they made a pretty agressive marketign campaign for that episode (preview video, preview photo, interview everywhere on the web...)
it was their biggest episode so far, maybe just behind the serie's premiere.
so the real questions are:
_will the rating still be slightly up next week? (meaning: did they gain new audience)
_were advertiser willing to pay more for the commercial break of this episode?
_if yes, does this increase in incomes cover the costs of the marketing campaign?
_does the good performance of this week allow for a permanent increase in their commercial break value?

but money's talk aside, that very well might be the beast smallville episode ever done.
there is minor complaint of course (weak villain, not enough time to see star spangled kid and sandman in action before they were killed, the wings of hawkman, etc) et some bigger one (not flash, no green lantern, no wildcat...they even mention hourman without showing him...i know too much character would have been impossible, but still) but the episode has a really good story, some descent acting performance (am i the only one who thinks the guest star were better than the regular cast? dr fate and martian manhunter are so more believable/enjoyable than boring-one-expression clark and i-get-it-you're-a-b*tch lois) and a real respect for the original material. They already did it with the Legion episode, but i think this one is even better (but twice longer too, so probably easier too make it work as a real story)

I do have one question: were was the league? the all point of the episode was that they only assemble in time of crisis instead of learning to live with each other. I was actually expecting aquaman, canary and even zatanna to show up, to have the league battle ice-guy and loose because not enough practice/organisation and have the JSA show them how it's done to finally go with a full league/JSA team up working in perfect coordination to defeat the bad guy. I know it's been done a million time in comics, but damn would have i liked to see it in live-action.... So what's the deal? Guests weren't available? Were asking for too much money? Just don't want to come back to this show? that's my only real regret with this episode, the lack of JLA to contrast with the JSA.

You actually had exactly three from each team featured in the episode.  The point, repeatedly made is that both teams needed a reason to get together.  The JLA, as Clark repeatedly says, isn't really a team yet, and the JSA has dispersed and needs to be regathered.  This is just the start of both happening.

As for Zatanna, she's featured next episode.

Also note that both this and the Legion episode were written by guest comic book writer Geoff Johns.  I'd say he knows the comics pretty well, having written quite a few of them.

This was a decent episode.  I am so glad that

Smallville has been officially renewed for a 10th season.  (http://comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25090)

I'm really impressed the show has gone on this long, and honestly I don't find the quality has really dipped.

muahahaha (evil laugh) you don't have to go back that far to find a lame plot/episode.
I wish they'd do like with DBZ, make a new version of smallville with all the nonsense/useless scene cut out. The tenth season was pretty much a given, the show was cleary not aiming at closure for this year. let's hope it will be the last...

lol yeah that was a low point, but I'm talking more the last few seasons. I've never considered the show to be great in any way but it's usually around the same level of quality for me on the whole.

Right now Smallville is the best rated Friday show the CW's ever had.  Expect them to keep renewing the show as long as they thing they can get away with it, and then try to do a spinoff or continuation of some sort.  Frankly, I wish they'd do a JSA series instead.  I'd go for that.

well, less nonsense ^^ the "not in the manga" parts to be more specific. plus it no longer requires 3 episode to change a lightbulb. if you're interested, check "dbz kai", that the name of this remake. it's for the 20th anniversary of DBZ i think, remade in HD 16/9 and redubbed by the original cast...with all the filler episode cut out.

the "lana is a witch" almost killed the show for me, but it definitly got better. oh wait, wasn't there a "warrior angel" episode like two weeks ago, where

zatanna acted like a tramp and tried to bone clark while chloe was trying to have sex with a little boy turned into a perfect man-pet?

I read Trelau's comment as meaning that, just when the series looked like it was going so well (the JSA episode), they suddenly through in a really bad episode and ruined things.

(Note- I don't currently have a working tv, so I haven't actually seen any of these episodes first hand, so I can't personally comment on them.)
Title: Re: Smallville season 9 ***SPOILERS***
Post by: Trelau on March 06, 2010, 06:04:36 PM
Yes Alaric, that's what i meant: the work on the JSA episode was really good; they could have launch a JSA spin off if they wanted to: costume, actors, characters and plot were the best smallville had seen for this season. and they ruined everything with the next episode. they actually could have attracted and fidelize (not sure if the word exist ) new viewers: use JSA to draw attention, then  for the next 2-3 weeks doing a little more effort than usual on plot and guest money to have a JSA guy make cameo apperence (stargirl really could have started a "civilian" relationship with the others) to get the new viewers hooked and THEN decrease quality of episode like expected.
But they choose the full-stop "you though the show was good? well watch THAT!" option. In a way, that very bold. Or stupid, i can't decide.

Well then punctuation is your friend. Here's what I saw--"the JSA episode made me yell at my screen. . ."

So I read that as more ridiculousness after the JSA episode already made you upset.

But you're right, it probably wasn't the best way to right after the high point of the season, if not the series.

to be fair i exactly wrote "seeing that just a week after the JSA episode made me yell at my screen" emphasis added of course, but i don't see how i could have ponctuated that differently
i wouldn't go as far as saying this episode was the high point of the show though (the legion episode was pretty awesome too) or even of the season: Zod is the best actor out here for the moment, and since last week's evolution of the character we can hope for a great finale.
btw, was there no episode this week?

Comma before just and after episode, preventing me from reading it the way I did.  As written, it could be read as  "this episode came a week after my watching the JSA episode which made me yell at the screen" or "the episode which made me scream came a week after of the JSA episode".  You could easily read it both ways as written, and of course I inevitably chose the wrong one, which shouldn't surprise anyone.

As much as I try to prevent myself from making posts about grammar, Cat... that's a no. Commas wouldn't go where you suggested. That's not to say he couldn't have worded it better. All it [the sentence] was missing was a noun such as the word episode to make it more lucid.
Title: Re: Smallville season 9 ***SPOILERS***
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on March 06, 2010, 09:14:24 PM
A slight re-wording would have been better, that is true.

At any case, it was basically a misunderstanding.  I think we can all agree that the JSA ep was awesome and if they ever wanted a seriously good premise for a Smallville spinoff, this is it.

I love this forum so much.....I went from reading bad papers to reading this, and it just made me happy to see people actually THINKING about how they write things.  Ha, thank you gentlemen.

On topic, I may have to track down the JSA episode at some point in time.  I have vehemently avoided Smallville for years (approximately since it should have ended the first time), but that seems like something worth breaking that self-imposed embargo for (like Aquaman and JLA episodes years ago).

I'm sorry to dig up that thread, but Shortpacked! just did a comic that perfectly resume that season of Smallville

http://shortpacked.com/comic/book-11/02-the-relationshipocalypse/noflightsnotights/ (http://shortpacked.com/comic/book-11/02-the-relationshipocalypse/noflightsnotights/)

Joke aside, the Checkmate arc/villain has become more interesting than the Zod-Kandorian arc. The fact that they are suppose to stay for the 10th season clearly affected the way they handled the Zod/Clark relationship, for better or for worse (seems worse for the moment, but maybe it will be awesome after...yeah, sure)

I know i'm the only one posting here, but still:
the season finale was actually pretty good. Some character development, a great intro, an almost-return from the JLA/JSA, and a very comicbook-esque fight to the death in the end.
That one i might rewatch (it's not as good as the Legion or JSA episode, but for a season finale it's better than the doomsday one)

Spoiler
I really doubt that Zod would make such a stupid mistake, when he whispered to Clark that he killed Faora and their unborn child. Did he forget that the Kandorians all have super hearing? Also Clark holding his own (after the blue Kryptonite exposure) against Krypton's legendary soldier? I don't think so.

Spoiler

Remember Zod just got these powers.  He's not used to them yet, he's used to being powerless, so the superhearing thing never occurred to him.

Also, Clark's had to fight against opponents of equal strength several times before, so he's had some experience.  Zod is also a legendary general, not necessarily an especially brilliant soldier.  He's doubtless had better training, but Clark has experience on his side.

EDIT:  You know, I forgot all about Jor-El's extensive training all this season.  Clark probably has the advantage in the training factor as well.

I think the beginning was almost worth watching for the entire episode.  We get a glimpse of two years in the future and we see Lois being Lois, we see(hear) that Jimmy Olsen is a photographer at the Daily Planet(not going to go as far as say resurrected) and more importantly, we see (reflected) the symbolic costume.  Though I really didn't much care for the entire Kandorian arch, I liked the progression of the season.  We're given characters and plots from the Universe and introduced into this universe, Checkmate, Zod, JSA, Waller and Lord.  And of course Clark being Superman("the blur"(they really could have come up with a better name(something much more heroic))).  I just wish he flies already damnit.  Bring on the effin tights.  The whole "No flights, no tights and no Lana" rule should have been left when Smallville was just in Smallville.  Now it's a completely different show than it was nine years ago.  Only two original cast members left and we know this is like Survivor or Highlander and there can be only one... and we know who that is.  At least if we're going on to at least another year(and we see no more than two more) give us a treat by the end of the show.  I'm just curious what could next season bring?  Undoubtedly, Lex has to return... somehow.  Likely won't see Bruce Wayne/Batman, but that would be a good treat.  Callum Blue is signed for another year.Maybe the return of another villain.  Bizarro, Brianiac or someone alien?

And does anyone know who that old lady was that was sewing outside of Tess Mercer's hospital room?
