Game review site

Which game review site do you guys prefer or trust? Do you have any?

Mostly avoid game review sites.  I know the types of games I like and rely on demos to make my decision.  I find many times review sites don't coincide with my opinions too much.

Cardmaster

I use Gamespy and Gamespot for game news, but don't actually read game reviews. I trust only my own opinions when it comes to games and a few of my close friends whom I know have similar taste.

I tend not to trust review sites myself, since there's really no way to tell whether the reviewer's taste in games is the same as yours (unless, of course, you're familiar with the person doing the review and know that your preferences are pretty similar). I usually use them only to download demos (for PC games) or look at videos of the gameplay (for console games) and get a general idea of the feedback about the game, but if I enjoy a demo or am convinced by gameplay videos that a game is worth a rental, a website review doesn't usually sway my opinion one way or another.

I find GameFAQS.com to be useful, though. It's the best site I've found for tracking down game bugs, and since their reviews are written by "regular people," it's sometimes more reliable to go through multiple reviews and form a preliminary opinion from there (most "professional" game reviewers have played more games than you ever will, so what they find boring might be totally exciting for you, for one thing).

I'll probably get flayed but.... ign.com

Podmark

I use Gamespot, but I really just use their reviews as a method to learn about games that I'm already interested in. I don't really look for recommendations for games to try, more so validation that the games I'm interested in have the features that I'd like.

I'll probably get booed out of here too... but I use G4's X-Play site and their show for their off the cuff and often humorous reviews. BUT much like everyone else here I always use the Demo of the game to really merit shelling out the cash for the game but when it's a console then I go for a reviewer who loves that type of game and feedback on web sites.

I use Gamespot.  I may not agree with all the reviews, but usually when a game is bad they know.  Anything that gets a 7 or better I will consider buying or at least downloading a demo.  Demos are huge now so I don't waste my bandwidth for something thats below average.

TheMarvell

I mainly use IGN. Sometimes I've disagreed whole heartedly, but for the most part, they know what's good and bad about a game. Sometimes I'll look at Gamespot too and see if they say or score anything different. Occasionally I'll watch a video review over at GameTrailers too.

There's also GameRankings.com, which is sort of like the Rotten Tomatoes of gaming reviews.

A TV show with popup ads hurray! Why do they have that thing on the bottom now? And why is Morgan Webb allowed to be on TV? While it's still the only original show on G4 worth watching (though not anymore with the thing on the bottom), I liked it a lot better when it was just Adam on Extended Play. Or with that weird girl when it was Gamespot TV. Adam Sessler is funny and likeable because he's funny and doesn't act like he's a super-leet gamer genius when he's reading off the teleprompter like Morgan does. I really don't like her. Every time I watch G4 I cry a little inside in memory of the awesomeness that was techtv and the long-deceased Screen Savers. That was such a good show. Man, back in the day they used to have SMART people talking about computer stuff. And now... Cops? And idiots who seem to have a weird disease where they think everything they say is funny even though nothing they say is ever funny. Ever. :banghead: LOL HALO AND PORN FUNNY EH? A whole channel ruined.  :(

Oh, and I read IGN even if they're wrong. Cuz sometimes they're right and usually they'll describe the game enough so I can tell if I'll like it regardless of its score.

Oh, I agree 100% with you there that Adam Sessler really rocked the reviews on Extended Play and the loss of Screen Savers from TechTV. Morgan Webb was a writer/staff member from TechTV and she was promoted up to co-host after she started going to Cons and gained the geek drool factor (heck she even did a sexy centerfold shoot for a tech magazine because of that hype factor). However I think that Blair Butler (comic reviewer from Attack Of The Show) has handled the co-cost job far better and even looks hot in a stormtrooper outfit so that must earn her some geek points somewhere especially around this forum.

The morons running G4TV right now are probably the guys who currently run the Gameshow Network and nearly trashed Sci-Fi before airing Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica saved it. I even forgave them putting pop-ups on Star Trek 2.0 because at least there was some gamer fans who tolerated that classic show. Executives put anything on their networks that can pull in better ratings but often forget that bad shows on themed channels often cost them viewers and a better chance for a new network to take over.

I caught that show during my Christmas vacation. (Had free satellite tv in my cabin.) I have to agree with your assessment, BWPS.  Morgan Webb, while not bad looking, is not meant for tv.  She appeared stilted and uncomfortable in front of the camera.  Actually, I didn't like the show overall.  The enthusiasm of both hosts (and special segment guy) felt forced and the "reviews" felt more like adverts.  I do miss the days of Screen Savers.

Previsionary

Actually, Morgan acts totally different on the different shows she appears on. On AOTS, she's more lively, on the talkshows she's been on, she's more friendly. I think X-play morgan is just her in character to balance out Adam as she wasn't that stiff and mean on screensavers either. Also, X-play has long stopped that 2.0 crap, haven't they? I know I haven't seen it in awhile, but I don't watch tv much either.

As to the question, I don't really use game review sites for the same reason I don't really use movie review sites, I typically don't agree with them.

gengoro

Gamespot and Ign, but just to learn info about the game.  Dont really care about the game scores unless they're really low across the board.  I always rent a game anyway or like others, try the demo if Im unsure about it being good.

Tech Tv for life!

Pretty much what he said for me as well.

A game review site (well more of a blog) that I like to check in on every once in a while is Games for Lunch. Essentially, the guy plays the game for a hour and sees whether the game is worth continuing after that first crucial hour.
