Just found this in the new release section of the library.

Haven't read through it yet, but from what I have, it seems like a lot of fun.  Original superheroes are features which are obvious analogues of both DC and Marvel heroes.

Most fun of all, half of the book is narrated by the villain, which is not a perspective we see very often.  And it seems to portray him very well, both insane, and yet with a firm grasp on reality at the same time.  It also contains numerous references and in-jokes about both superheroes and other fiction, most noticably in both the book and chapter titles.

I'd recommend you check it out.

My local libraries don't have a copy and I am a little hesitant to spend the $20 on buying it, especially given that the online reviews are ... mixed.

I'll be curious what you think when you have finished it.

I thought it was great.

It's a good story, with enough leaning on archetypes to make it familar, without being a series of ripoffs. The real gold of the story isn't the actual events, but the way the characters see them and describe them. Hearing the villain narrate his battles toward the end is really funny.

QuoteI leaned in to the microphone. Time to talk some trash.
"You didn't think your prisons would stop me, did you? You knew I'd be back. I... Doctor Impossible!"
It passed the time.

Lunarman

I've seen it around, and I think I'll buy it when it comes out in paparback. there isn't enough good superhero novels around at the moment.

Try interlibrary loan.  You can find just about anything through it.  I've been reading tons of graphic novels through mine.

More comics should have protagonists like Doctor Impossible.
