Saving my FFVTTR Disk

I've had my FFVTTR disk for a long time now, and the cracks are beginning to show, literally. My disk is so scratched that I frequently get read errors, and recently my whole computer locked up during gameplay. Is there any way to make a copy/(is it image?) of the disk so that I can continue to play without having to purchase another copy off ebay? If at all possible I'd rather that I could play without inserting a disk, but a copy would be ok. Can you suggest any free programs that can do this?

Ok, the other problem, I said my whole computer locked up. What happened was I was just rumble rooming when the screen froze, the sound froze and the computer wouldn't respond to anything. I had to reset and log back in to windows. About 20 minutes ago I tried to load up FFVTTR (first time since the lock up) and I got a blue screen of death which then proceeded to boot my computer into safe mode. I hope my scratched disk and the error are related, otherwise I've got a potentially major issue on my hands.

Anyway, thank you and any ideas?

on the ffvttr disc, a good idea to preserve it would be to mount the image to a virtual drive using alcohol 120% (if you have it) or daemon tools. Mounting it would mean you would no longer need the cd and you could probably easily burn another copy of the cd if ya need to.

Protomorph

You might also look into getting the scratches on your original disc buffed out/resurfaced. There are several products out there that will do this (such as Skip Doctor). I use a bench grinder with buffing pads in the place of the grind wheels. You may need to do this before you can mount your disk image, as outlined in the earlier post.

Lunarman

Thankyou, I'll give that a go.

Carravaggio

i own three copies of FFvsTTR
the first i bought not long after the game came out
the other two i got off ebay for about 7 bucks each
you might as well buy another one.

Kommando

Also check out game stores periodically.  Sometimes you can find copies cheap just by looking.

Right, I used Alcohol but the disk image couldn't fool the disk protection program that comes with the UK version. I also burnt a disk, but it needed a different disk key and so wouldn't load. On the second time the newly burnt disk caused a blue screen crash so I'm presuming there's corrupted files on the disk itself which is annoying. Looks like it's time for ebay.

Thanks for the help

Hey Lunar,

You probably should run a system scan just to make sure something nasty isn't on your system (or the cd drive isn't malfunctioning). As for the starforce thing, I think Daemon tools could easily bypass that if you do choose to go the virtual route sometime in the future.

That's the route I took when someone here posted that FFvT3R was on Amazon for US$5 each a little while ago. I bought three extra copies. I may keep one for backup and two more are to become gifts.

The problem for our UK members is that I don't know if amazon.com ships to the UK at a reasonable price. (It would be silly to buy a $5 game and spend $36 on shipping.) I went to amazon.co.uk and they only have the DJ version. Frankly, the reality is that someone will have the North American release (and will probably have it pretty cheap) and will ship it to the UK. I would find one of those sellers and have them ship me a copy or two.

BTW, I haven't used Alcohol 120% (the software!), but I know that FFvT3R won't work with some imaging software. I am assuming you've tried it with Alcohol 120%, but just a heads up that you want to check before buying other imaging/virtual CD programs for this use.

I initially had the DJ version but when I got my new computer last year I checked out Amazon to obtain the proper version of this game.  I can't remember the exact price I paid but it was very reasonable as I recall.

That's good news. I just went to amazon.com and went through the shopping/checkout process (without finalizing) to buy the North American release and have it shipped to an address of a friend in London. The software was just $5, but the shipping was $36. That's why I was worried that one might have to find another vendor than amazon.com, but maybe I hit the wrong shipping option or something and that's what it takes to have it sent over in a first class seat on the Concorde, with a complimentary Blue Sapphire martini.  :D

(I mean US$41 still isn't a terrible total price, but it just seems high compared to the $5 for the software alone.)

Should we take it to mean that you HAVE used alcohol 120% (NOT the software)?

Only hyperbolically.

Lunarman

Well there's one on Ebay form £1.50 + £1 postage so that'll be the one I'll get :)

I should add some information from another forum thread.

Empire Interactive has released a new budget version of FFvTTR in Europe that is essentially identical to the U.S. version, meaning no Starforce, and the U.S. modtools apparently are fully compatible with it.

If you haven't already commited yourself to that Ebay version, that might be a better bet.

Lunarman

Well the Ebay version is a rereleased Empire Interactive version so it should be fine. However I was hoping not to have to install a new FFVTTR. just use a new disk to run the game.

Thanks

MJB

I don't have FFvTTR, so if anyone is looking for an X-mas gift for me...

:P :P :P LOL

catastrophe

i bought FFvTTR and after i installed it i found out my cd-key was used

stumpy

CD key? Must be a difference between regional versions. The North American release didn't use a CD key.

Lunarman

Yeah, that's why I couldn't just use an image. the UK version has this extra "disk protection" built into it. It takes an extra 10 seconds to start up and means you have to enter a CD key at first run.

New-ish UK budget brand re-release. No Copy Protection at all - you don't need the CD in - or CD-Key. Its fixed to be mod compatible like the US version too.

Hope it helps you get FFvTTR sorted :)
