So I just got laid off today, from a job I worked at for 2 and a half years. About half the part-timers (including me) and a handful of full-timers got the axe with little to no warning whatsoever, despite back in August, the bigwigs said the last thing they wanted to do was do a mass lay off (instead, they insisted they'd move people to other departments). Gotta love backstabbing, two-faced, shady corporate America!

This sucks. :(

Silver Shocker

Gotta love backstabbing, two-faced, shady corporate Canada too (I'm Canadian, and I've been there and then some). That really does suck royally. Good luck man, hope things improve for you.

My Dad was laid off like 4-5 years ago from a realty company. He fixed things for them (on their property and the offices), until a new boss came and layed off a a lot of people. Its all god now though, so I'm betting things will go good for you too.

And corporate society does suck. People will do whatever it takes to get to the top and stay there. Using bodies as steps means nothing to them.

Yeah, worked for a security company that lost the account I was at.  (ESPN headquarters, actually)  They got us together at a meeting and told us that they'd be losing the account in a couple of months and promised us that they'd be waving the non-compete clause (which no other security firm has, by the way) so the new company could take us on.  Suddenly and without warning they reversed that with a month to go and basically told us we were all out of work.

So yeah, I hear you.

I worked for title/real estate/insurance company. Our volume of work was going to be lower in the fall, and they told us this, while at the same time telling us they'd be getting more business in other departments. Instead of sticking to their word, they laid off about 40 people in the last two days.

I know there's better jobs out there, but with my wonky school schedule and in the middle of the semester, it's going to be frustrating trying to find a part time job that works and pays decently...

The Phantom Eyebrow

Sorry to hear this Marvell.  I hope things turn around quickly for you.

Glitch Girl

Me too.  Though your industry isn't exactly the most stable at the moment.  Here's hopng you find something good quick.  :)

Stupid coroprates... man... bummer.

Good luck with this. Y'know what they say, "Everything happens for a reason."

BentonGrey

I've been there, sorry to hear about that man.  Good luck getting back on top!

Outcast

Don't lose hope Marvell. I'm sure you will find a new job that's way better. Like Hitman said, "Everything happens for a reason". Maybe you were meant for greater things. Just keep on doing your best, man.

On the plus side, more time to play CoH...

On the minus side, pretty much everything else.

Bummer dude.

TheMarvell

well, I suppose I could just use this time to focus more on my school work, but why do that when I can play Halo 3? :P

No really though, thanks for the support guys. I've been looking around and hopefully I'll land one soon. Looking for a new job can be such a pain in the arse. I applied for a job that made me take this ridiculous survey that took 40 minutes to finish, and I kid you not, one of the questions was "Even when I'm not at work, I'm thinking about work. ~Agree, Disagree, or Neutral?" How in the world do you answer that one?! And within 24 hours I got an automated reply via email telling me "my talents didn't match up to any of their open positions at this time, blah blah blah" Nobody even looked at my resume, just that stupid survey bull****. And this was for, of all things, a data entry position, which is what I've spent most of the last 2 years doing.

Ugh, I hate those things. Even most minimum-wage jobs are switching to them, it's insane. And it doesn't help the managers eithor, because we have a Borders out here with one of those hiring systems desperate for workers, but no one can beat it without losing all credibility.

Ah the days when you could get away with having a few old coworkers lie for you about personality, I miss you so.

I've taken that test too.  I was applying to work at Blockbuster video and couldn't pass it!  Yet my buddy who's been in and out of jail, has a problem with stealing, and is an alcoholic passed with flying colors.  Go figure.  That's one of the things that prompted me to move out of the country.

The Hitman

FYE's just switched to that system, and I'll tell you, it's terrible. No one's getting hired because of it.

I think it's one of those things that strikes corporate america as a "good idea" because hey, they don't have to waste time with interviews and getting a feel for a person, they can get a full psych readout online. Except practically speaking, psych profiles mean nothing, especially when the people who are trying to be honest in them are prejudiced against.

But hey, anything to save a few hours worth of work, right?
