I seem to have solved this, if it ever happens to anyone else: I noticed that FFedit wouldn't run either, but instead in task manager I could see that the process had started, and was just ramping up and up its memory use trying to open.  So I replaced my FFX dat files with an older backed up version, and presto, it works.  I guess when the game crashed on me it corrupted one or more of the dat files.
