Does anybody have the character creator for COH?  I got one a while back from a Korean website but my computer woulddn't open it..  Is there anything out there like this?  If it's not an official software, I apoliogize and disregard this..

I'm thinking about buying COH (again) and I wanna try out the creator before I buy it...

Ohh... That's not a problem.  ^_^

I've got a link to the current site right here: http://www.cohguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5971
Just follow the link 2nd from the bottom for the actual costume creator.
Then the instructions for changing the language to english is the post below that.

Plus thanks to someone who figured out how to unlock costume parts there is a Mod to it now.
Click this link: http://www.cohguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7546
You just take certain files from the CoH program you installed and add on his special mod files to unlock all of the costume parts up to CoV. Yes, You can make villians too with the Mod.

Hope that helps. :-)

Guys, I'm going to guess that discussion of a hack of NCSoft's software, software not supposed to be generally available to the US public and whose unauthorized distribution is officially frowned on by the publisher, is probably against forum rules.

I'm not going to debate whether it's okay to use the software privately or not.  I'm just saying this probably isn't the best place to be discussing it or providing links to it.  I'm surprised an admin hasn't already removed the thread.

This software was originally a promotional program for the Korean release of City of Heroes. It's not a hack of anything (editing your own registry and config files is legal still) and the distribution was, at least at first, straight from Cryptic's FTP server (same place you get your copy of the updater).

*However* it was removed shortly after it was released due to the Marvel lawsuit and some legalese in their settlement.

It's not illegal to posess and I do believe a number of our upstanding members (and moderators and admins) still have copies.

I will assume you've read the license for the software and know more about it than I do.  I certainly can't read Korean.  If the mods and admins say it doesn't violate the rules, that's good enough for me.  Like I said, I was only guessing that it might be.

I can't see how sharing a tool, that NCSoft once made available for download, would be a bad thing.

Exactly. The guys at Marvel were concerned`cause someone could create spider-man, hulk etc. with this program!
If u see it their way, drawing Marvel characters with your pencil at home is illegal, and they will sue you if they find out about it :P

Let me put it this way.

The fact that NCSoft mistakenly distributed it, that's their own fault.  Those who already downloaded it are, in my view, entitled to hang onto it.  And if they choose to monkey with it in any way, so long as they don't redistribute their changes in any way, that's their personal business and none of anyone else's.

The key phrase is, 'they once made available'.  Meaning they don't distribute it anymore.

I would be very, very surprised to learn that NCSoft did not include a EULA with the software.  And I would be very, very surprised if that license granted the user unlimited rights to redistribute their software, free or not.  And posting links for the purpose of illegal sharing (redistribution) of software IS against forum rules as stated.

Quote3. No posting or advocating illegal material or practices, including but not limited to warez, cracks, CD Key requests or links to sites or file sharing software with the intention of distributing copyrighted material.

But I don't intend to download the software just to satisfy my curiosity and if the license is only in Korean I don't read Korean anyway.  If anyone wants to argue that it's legal I'll have to take them at their word.

For the record, if NCSoft ever chose to officially distribute an English-version of their character creator as freeware, I'd probably snag it.

MJB

I could make a few Marvel characters using Hero Machine but it hasn't been shut down. The CoH character tool is just a beefed up version of that. Without the game attached to it all you can do is look.

I can see any company getting upset if developers put in certain items that are obviously taken from copyrighted characters. These companies have to protect their properties otherwise they run the risk of them becoming public domain. Threating NCSoft with a lawsuit was an effort to protect their properties. You shouldn't bash a company for protecting what's theirs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that a version of the Character Creator was released pre-beta. I recall Zapow talking about it.

No, I fully understand someone protecting their property. I was talking about the standalone character creator not the COH game. I can understand that they were really uncomfortable with seeing bunch of Hulks,Spidermans online, and I can understand why did they threat NCSoft with a lawsuit.
But what I don`t understand is what`s wrong with someone creating marvel characters at home, offline for personal needs.

BlueBard

Just to clarify...

I don't think there is anything morally wrong with making Marvel or any other characters for your own personal enjoyment.  If that's illegal, it's a waste of ink and taxpayer money.  Nor do I think putting your fan art up on a web page is morally wrong, especially if you're not making money off it, even if it is arguably an infringement on someone's copyright or trademark.  Maybe just imprudent.

Legally though, I may be standing on real shaky ground if I put freeware up on a file server for the whole world to grab without first seeking the permission of the author of said freeware, if that freeware comes with a license that says I'm not supposed to redistribute (share) it.

I'm guessing here that NCSoft's CoH Character Creator has a license and it isn't the GPL.  That's the only reason I ever even said anything.  It doesn't have anything to do with people using it to recreate Marvel-type characters.

And I will say that I probably should have kept my mouth shut and simply notified the Admins and let them decide what to do about it, rather than create a fuss.  I thought I was being nice and giving folks a friendly warning without getting an Admin involved.
