Bit of a problem here.

In a nutshell: Batman by Grenadier, alpha channels, and nifscope.

No matter what I have done up to this point, I can not get his cape to display properly via the character tool. I should also mention that this problem seems to apply to any instance where alpha channels and nifscope are concerned.

For starters could someone give me some idea as to what the correct steps are for setting up an alpha channel (if in fact that is what I am supposed to be doing). For example: do I start with nifscope or the alpha channel and Paint Shop Pro.

I'm running Windows 98SE. I don't remember my video card at the moment but I know it was something decent. This is only a starting point.

OK. I know. This isn't really a reply. That would mean that I...... uummm, heh, heh, heh, yupp

Moving right along....

I just wanted to add some info that I just discovered for the benefit of anyone who might read this.

The other day, I said that I was running Windows 98SE. I am currently working on some Freedom Force items for my nephew's birthday. I installed Character Tool on my wife's pc so that I could work with them there. My wife's OS is Windows XP. Her graphics card is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver. (I believe this is a graphics card. I could be wrong.)

I opened up Grenadier's Batman and guess what? Batman's cape - no problems.

Dark clouds are beginning to spread or'er my pc. I fear the future looks somewhat bleak.

yup, sounds like the problem is definitely your video card.

Speaking of Gren's Batman, am I the only one experiencing some graphical glitch when I use the custom batarang/bat bola FX, like the shuriken FX appears as soon as I throw something?  It happens in the Batman mod actually...

Previsionary

it's a problem with using some ff1 based fx. It's fixed by erasing the start nif of the fx.

Let Evil Doers beware..........

For there is no greater sadness in all the gaming world than a video card that has gone wrong and failed to fulfill its potential.

Oh yes, let them beware.......

for somewhere in the darkness.......

Only a few minor problems there or I would have pursued them already.

My current pc - although greatly improved over my previous model - still can't go much beyond where it is now. If I want to buy some new game software that's out there I have to remind myself to stick with the bargain bin. Primarily because its usually the older stuff.

My other problem is a  common one but a major one for me I'm afraid: severe lack of funds. I'm sure no one wants me to go any further with that one.

Here's a question. I put it to anyone who might happen to read this.

I have an ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card in my pc. It was the best I could do at the time. I am by no means a scholar where computers are concerned. What about the settings on the graphics card? Does anyone out there have any knowledge concerning the best settings for a Radeon 9250?

I used to have an ATI Radeon 9250... IIRC, that should be above and beyond the requirements to play FFv3R. Can't remember the settings that work best for the game (although I think everything worked okay out of the box... and this was under Windows 98), but you'd probably be best served downloading the most up-to-date drivers from the ATI site (although you'll want to keep your old drivers just in case the newest ones screw up your game).

SpecterFan

I'll most definitely grab the drivers.

I think I already did that but it's always best to keep up to date with that sort of thing anyway.

While I'm waiting for feedback on the settings issue, what about the correct procedure for working with nifscope and alpha channels? Maybe I'm actually undoing something that I've already done without realizing it. I have a feeling I'm leaving out a step that everyone else takes for granted or maybe doing it in the wrong order.

If this is confusing, I apologize. Alpha channels and I were only recently introduced while nifscope and I are only slightly better aquainted. Despite some rough spots, we are doing quite well.

Any input concerning step-by-step procedure for us newbie types???

If you are using an ATI card, I would recommend downloading the ATI Tray Tools:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/

They allow you to edit all kinds of parameters that you normally cant get to, and save those settings as presets.
I've found it to be really useful on my machine. I actually got Oblivion pretty close to playable.
