Interested in skinning ... tips?

Hey guys,

I wouldn't mind having a whack at skinning. I'm not hardcore enough to purchase software, a tablet, etc ... what/where is the best freeware available to download for skinning?

Also, nifskoping ... what do I need to download? Is it difficult?
