Complete newbie looking for tutorials

Hi!

I feel like I'm a little bit late to the party ;) Fortunately there are still some hard drinkers around at 4am, as I can see (metaphorically speaking).

I recently fell in love with FFvtTR. I downloaded Dr Mike's Patriot City mod (which I believe includes FFX 3.something, right?) and I of course started making my own character to play with. All that I've been using so far is the game's builtin character tool. I also used FFXEDIT to assign a template to my Nemesis attribute (apparently, I'm a wooden wraith from an alternate PAST chased by a powerful Nazi General. Don't ask.) Now I've hit a first roadblock and instead of just asking here (which I will do, in a moment ;)) I thought I should ask for tutorials because my questions are so very BASIC that you can probably not even see me anymore from UP THERE where you craft things like FFX.

So, is there a very basic newbie's collection of tutorials? I really don't think I'm going to get very far into this stuff, but I do want to mess around a little more, and I know from experience with other game mods I've dabbled with that there will be more of these basic questions, and I'd really hate to take up your time with lots of stuff that probably sounds to you like my mother asking me why she has to click TWO TIMES on an icon to start Word sounds to me.

Okay, now moving on to the actual question I have ;)

I created a character and used the Wraith mesh. From what I understand, things like lead-up time to a power and how long the power takes altogether (which in turn of course affects how quickly you can use the power again) is attached to the animations of the mesh. Is that right? I guess the "speed" setting for instance in a melee power only affects how hard it is for the enemy to dodge? If I got that right (and I believe so, since choosing a different animation with certain meshes affects the COST of the power), then how can I edit these things? I have a feeling that what I'm asking for has something to do with "hex editing" meshes, a section I saw on these forums, but I'm not sure.

I downloaded the mod tools from Irrational, and I had a look into them, and I guess my best bet is the Nif Viewer (although I've yet to find a single animation in those files I could load into it), but I haven't been able to actually do anything yet.

I guess my question is simply this: if I want the wraith's ranged attack animation to play a little quicker, in turn enabling the wraith to attack again a little sooner, what do I have to do?

Thank you!

What you're asking is very hard. Perhaps impossible. You see in order to change the length of an animation you have to alter the keyframes in 3DS max. Sadly Irrational never released the wraith mesh to the public so we've nothing to go on, if you get my meaning.

I don't think you can do it :(

Thanks for the answers!

So would it be easier to do this with a mesh that's been released? I take it the four custom meshes that shipped with FFvtTR would count as released, and I also gather there's a plethora of user-made meshes?

And I should probably take this thread into the hex edit forums. Thanks again for your answers :)
