Just got back from seeing this, anyone else see it yet?

Now, I'll be honest, my fondness for the turtles has only come about in the last few years: I wasn't allowed to watch the cartoons as a kid.

Anyhoo, I was pretty excited, because this was coming from a real up n coming animation studio and it was supposed to do some great stuff with the medium.

It didn't disappoint; I went in just hoping to be entertained, and it achieved that in spades. Additionally, I gotta hand out major props to the animation team behind this one, they did great work with challenging (but fantastic) character designs.

Sooo, yeah. Anyone else see it yet?

This is the best movie I've seen in months, and one of the best I've seen in years!  It's got the style of Pixar's best, the depth of a Timm project, and the action of....well....I don't know, but it was AWESOME!  It was really WAY better than I had any hope for.  I was expecting something pretty low in complexity and depth, and I was wowed.  When I talk about what I want from comics, and entertainment in general, this can now serve as a good example of it.  It was emensely entertaining, had nothing objectionable morally, had the depth to entertain and compell the attention of an adult, the action and hijinks to entertain and keep the attention of a child.  In short, it was simply great.

BatWing

you guys saw it too!!?
i've just got home from the theaters and now i'm off to play  :ffvstr: with revenat's turtles!

captainspud

I've heard it's very much a children's movie.

BentonGrey

Not really, Spud.  I had heard that too, so I went in thinking I'd be really simple, but there is a lot of character development and a surprising amount of depth to it.

Filmed entirely in my hometown, I'd like to add. ^_^

Took my boys to see it tonight. I have never been a Turtles fan and I don't know what I was expecting, if anything at all, but I've got to say I loved it! Like others have said I was surprised by the depth to the story, but definitely pleasantly surprised.

We watched Eragon last week and I was struck by just how poorly directed that film was. TMNT on the other hand I thought was a very well directed flick. It makes quite a difference.

Good stuff. The filmmakers should be proud. Even if once in a while I was brought out of the story when I remembered "that's great, but they're giant talking turtles!"

BatWing

eragon? eeww
teenage mutant ninja turtles!!!! doo doo doo doo doo doo!

MJB

Ms_MJB and I took all of our boys to see TMNT earlier and fun was had by all.

I especially enjoyed the flick because it brought back fond memories from my younger days.

Midnight

It was good. It's not *very much* a children's movie, but that's obviously who it's marketed towards. The animation is shaky in places (raindrops that hit the exact same spot every time, trees that look like a swarm of angry hornets) but holds up generally. The plot is full of conveniences and oversights.

And the character development... it saddened me to see only Leo and Raph actually have three-dimensional characters who go through any sort of change. Mike and Don are pretty much caricatures (funny guy, smart guy) who just get cheap laughs. April and Casey are actually featured in a more prominent role plot wise.
In fact, I'd argue that the main protagonist is Raphael who actually undergoes a crisis of faith and comes out a stronger character.
It was good. Not great. Not a cerebral movie, but has a certain... geektastic quality.

MJB

To further prove my "geek-itude" my favorite turtle always has been Raph. To see him get the bulk of the story only made me happier. In fact, I may hate myself later for admitting this, when I got my first Raph toy I came up with the idea that in his time away from the turtles he became a hero. My cousin Matt had a mego Batman suit that he wasn't using and I dressed Raph in it. The Bat-symbol and the cape went missing long before I used it.

I forgot what I called my "super" Raph but it was a big validation to see Raphael dressed as a vigilante hero in the flick.

Monkeyman

I know I'm a bit late, but i have to defend this movie. I was skeptical about it; it looked like a toddler movie. I'll admit there are plenty for the kids to be happy about, but the movie as a whole was excellent. It is the kind of fun you get when you read comics, that sort of subconscious joy. I know many complained about the plot, but i found it compelling. I actually felt sympathetic for the main villain. The move made me love the characters, and that is something i haven't felt in a theater in a long time. Oh and the animation was fantastic, really, it surpassed all my expectations. My only complaint was the length; i wish it had been longer. Go and see it!

I've heard it's very much a children's movie.

Actually, they had DIFFUCULTY keeping toning it down to a PG rating. The director and producer said in interviews that they wanted to make it PG-13, but took it down to PG because they wanted to draw in the larger demographic. They said in a later interview that they'll make a sequel PG-13 but they'd prefir to do it R.

I loved this movie!

Saw it a while back, midnight showing I think I went to. The thing that makes me happiest with the film is that not only was it nostalgic but it was excellent even if I put all my nostalgia away trying to be more objective.

I loved Raph in the movie, and Leo as well. It is true that Mike & Don were basically caricatures but really I do not think the movie had enough space for them to develop with everything else going on. Maybe the next movie will change its' focus to the other two turtles somewhat.

and more action too!

I haven't seen it yet but those guys were my heroes when I was like 8, so I'm definitely going to see it due to all these positive posts.

Rented the new DVD last night, and I have to say, it was surprisingly good. I mean, I'd heard that it was decent fare for the younger set, but I'm surprised at how it didn't talk down to the audience. And the animation and direction are great... it's not quite The Incredibles but the designs work very well for the action sequences, very fluid and dynamic, and not the stiff-fest I was expecting from a relatively mid-budget CGI movie. Voice-acting was great, too... Mako (RIP) was great as Splinter, and I was surprised at how well Zhang Ziyi worked as Karai (although the linguist in me caught a bunch of "Mandarin-isms" in what was supposed to be Japanese accented-English that pulled me out of the film for half-a-second or two, but I imagine it's unnoticeable for most people who watch it).

Excellent film overall, and as far as this year's comic book movies go, this one tops Spider-Man 3 and FF2 in the fun department.

Silver Shocker

I recently caught Rush Hour 2 on tv (which had Zhang Ziyi as one of the villains) and I was surprised how her voice in that movie sounded nothing like her Karai voice. her Karai voice was much deeper. However, I thought it was a great voice, and considering she didn't even speak English when she did Rush Hour 2, she did a good job. Actually I thought all of the actors did. The new Turtle voices did a good job of sounding like the old movie voices. I even though Mikey's voice reminded me at times of Beast Boy from the Teen Titans cartoon.

I'm one of the few who wasn't a huge fan of the Splinter voice. Mako's Spinter sounded so differant than what I was used to from the cartoons and movies that it bothered me the whole time, but it is a good voice, and perhaps more appropriate for the charater, but I laughed out loud at his "I still got it!" line. Actually there were at least half a dozen jokes in the movie that had me laughing (not the least of which was Donnie's phone service bit).

I actually was planning to see this in theatres, but the local theatre screwed it over with movie times, which made it almost impossible for me to plan a visit to see it in time. But I rented it as soon as it cam out and really liked it.  I also love that the DVD is double-sided with a widescreen and fullscreen, as I don't own a tv that's Widescreen-friendly, but I'd like to one day.
