Another POV on Captain America's death ...

Marvel comics has a long history of using real life events to trigger their plotlines, and that got me to thinking.  With so much going on in America today -- like illegal detentions and wire taps, and the horrendenous stuff that went on at Abu Ghraib prison -- what if the scenario had gone like this:

1)  Cap surrendered.
2) Tony Stark became head of SHIELD
3) Stark decides that it isn't good press to have Cap in prison.
4) SHIELD is the home of the LMD (Life Model Decoy)
5) Stark creates an LMD of Cap and has it "assassinated"
6) Stark whisks the real cap off to a hidden prision
7) Stark declares Cap a hero and says wonderful PR around Cap, eliminating the Cap in prison scenario that hurts his Hero Registration Act PR.

This would allow for a series of books on the "new Cap".
Make total sense for bringing back the old Cap.
And be a pivotal plot point in overthrowing the Hero Registration Act, which is ridiculous on its face value.

Your thoughts?

I had a horrible thought last night.

What if Tony Stark created a clone of Cap (a la Thor) and that was the one who was "assassinated".

I can honestly say that Marvel has irked me, and whatever they do with Captain America (even bringing him back to life) will irk me at this point.

I'm going to guess that the pending autopsy that has been alluded to will destroy the notion that 'Cap' was an LMD.

I wouldn't completely rule out the clone thing, except that Marvel has done it before and it would be completely lame under the circumstances.

Probably the best thing Marvel could do would be to 'recreate' Captain America with a new Super-Soldier program and a new patriot.    Preferably with a known minor character who would be recognizable but open for character development, but I can't think of any that would fit the bill.

You'd have the benefit of realism (the dead stay dead) and continuity (the mantle has passed to a worthy successor) and room for plot development as the new Cap learns the ropes.  If they keep things along similar lines as the original Cap's origin, then they can plug that into the movie and it will work.

Of course, they won't.  They're bound to do something lame instead.

If it wasnt really cap then the first half of the "confession" issue would be pointless

i still hope Ancient Spirit's theory is truth. sure there is an analogy between the 'freedom' or spirit of America being dead, due in part to a lot of stuff including the Superhuman Registration Act, and Cap being killed, aka, America is dead cos freedom is dead, but dammit, i want steve rogers alive! you can't kill Cap, who the hell thinks they got the right to take Cap from the fans?
stupid bloody Joe Q...guys an arse. yep. regardless of his whole career, good and ill, i'm basing my judgment on this one event.   :P

Maybe they'll freeze the body cryogenically and the Super Soldier serum will regenerate him while he's on ice.

Yeah, I know that's dumb... but probably not as dumb as whatever they'll come up with.

I just finished listening to Jeph Loeb's point of view on it on a Fanboy Radio podcast. He wasn't really answering any questions, true, but gave some interesting insights into the Fallen Son series in the very least.

Has the "it's all a bad dream" angle been worked to death recently?  Marvel knows fans are tired of clones so the whole everything was a bad dream scenario has to be coming around on the story wheel sooner or later...that or we were watching events from a parallel dimension.

Yeah, I thought that too- pull back from a final scene to reveal Tony, Reed, Hank, etc all standing around a monitor and then have Tony go:

"And that gentlemen is my computer simulation of what will happen if this Registration act gets passed.  Obviously, as you can see, its a terrible idea with some really hideous consequences, so we must make sure that the bill goes down to defeat."

Its a cheat, I know - but its still better than what actually happened.

Then Reed has to say, "Anyway, the finglonger seems to be a rousing success."  :P

(Futurama reference, since that simulation quote reminded me of Professor Farnsworth's comments about his What If machine at the end of the "Anthology of Interest" episode. Of course, the finglonger wouldn't be of much use to Mr. Fantastic...)
