So my dad's got all these major authentic reel to reel back in Mexico of old jazz and louisiana jazz and such. Any way's he wants to turn them into MP3 so Im wondering which is the best program to rip audio from a mike port imput and hopefully export the file as a high quality mp3. Any clue?

I have found that Total Recorder (www.highcriteria.com) is an excellent program for recording from most sources, even the speaker outputs! And it's not that expensive. I think it's like, $12 (at least that's how much it was when I bought mine). it doesn't record to mp3 (I think) but the .wav files can be converted by many programs out there.

I'd be interested in some freeware/shareware solutions, as I've still got a couple tracks on vinyl that I haven't found CD replacements for (because I refuse to pay retail for a CD for one or two tracks).  And since I only have something like 8-10 songs like that, I can't justify it to myself to actually spend money on a program for it.

Usually I go for anything that's freeware, but that proggie I mentioned above works so well, that I didn't mind buying it.

I regularly do similar stuff, recording and mixing down (music my dad and grandpa play) from a 4-track recorder to my computer, cleaning it up and burning to CD.  I use Cool Edit 2000, a really great program by Syntrillium Software.  It was fifty bucks when I got it....

...and it looks like they were bought out by Adobe, who now sells a $350 package.  Dang, that's a bummer.

I'd just recommend looking around and checking out demos to see what fits your needs.  That's how I stumbled onto Cool Edit, and I've used it for LOTS of audio things.  Good luck.
