Hi I would like to know is there any official plans for a 3rd in the Freedom Force PC game?,

I've got some ideas for the 3rd game if anyone is interested?,

Unless the public at large rediscover the game and opt to buy it at full price and the wads of money get delivered to Irrational, or Hollywood options the game for a movie and more wads of money get delivered to Irrational... there is little chance of a 3rd one at this point.

I mean, the second game did so poorly that all support was dropped before the first patch even came out.  So yeah, basically no chance.

I keep hoping that with all the superhero movies and games coming out, FF might get another shot. But at the moment, it looks pretty dead.

But really who needs Irrational to make a third one. I always said we have enough tallent here on the forum to make an unofficial third one ourselves.

I say try it  I'd love to see another (since #2 was quick to beat) Course this would be great till Irrational finds out then were screwd XD

I would love to see an open source FF-like game.  We certainly have the artistic talent, but time, dedication, and coding talents are another matter altogether.

most def.

There's a significant lack of everything outside of skopers and skinners and you'd need people with, as cat said, enough free time and dedication to a project they're not getting paid for. I don't think you know this but...staring at code too long ends in craziness and destroyed cities. *nods wisely*

There may be two things being discussed here.

One is the idea of an actual new FF game release, with new, improved, and fixed game features, coding hooks, etc. And, that usually comes with a new campaign. That is really not currently possible do be done by the FR community, if for no other reason that the ability to make changes to the game engine requires having the code and there is no reason to think Irrational (or Take 2 or whoever owns it now, if it was part of the T2 buyout, which isn't necessarily the case) will release the code. If the code were available, I actually think those in this community have the coding chops to make some respectable improvements to the engine, especially considering that it is already very good. And, I am pretty sure that if IG open-sourced the FFvT3R engine (which I don't know if it even could do if it wanted to, depending on how its internals are licensed), I have no doubt that we would see many new and former-but-no-longer-active coders come into the fold.

The second prospect is just coming up with a new campaign featuring the FF world and characters, still using FFvT3R as the game engine. I think that is well within the abilities of the people here. I don't think there is anything artistically that is beyond people currently active and there isn't any scripting in either of the first two game campaigns that's beyond the people here. Maybe not even beyond what one can do with EZScript, though others would know more about that. Really, I think a big issue that gives the IG campaigns a polished feel that doesn't always make it into the fan mods is how much work they put into the voice acting. I don't know, but that may be a tough thing to collaborate on for a whole, long campaign mod, though I would expect it's doable. Getting people to devote the time to it, hmm...

Not necessarily.  If you are talking a complete open-sourced game built from the ground up (or using another open-sourced engine) and based on FF, but not using any of its characters or storylines, then yes, you could do that with no fear of Irrational or anyone else.  But as I said, not likely to ever happen, given the level of time, dedication, and coding talent needed.  Most projects of this type are either abandoned before a release, abandoned early on and never finished, or simply develop so very slowly that it might as well be abandoned.

But Cat as a community we are so strong and we want this so bad. I think we are willing to work hard and dedicate ourselves to this project. Heck inlist me for what ever skopes I can make.

As I said, art and 3d models would be simple, whatever format we used (it wouldn't be .nifs if open source) but who hear has tried to code a 3d engine form the ground up?  You?

I'd love to see it, but I don't think it feasable.

I'm usually the serious, realistic one on this forum. Cat seems to be taking my lines in this thread. Quit that! There's been plenty of dropped group projects. I hate to drag it up, as I'm sure cat is working on it whenever he has time, but look at Liberty Bay. It's been almost a year since the initial release and work has slowed down a lot on it. Common misconception is that group projects make things easier, that's only true in some aspects. Group projects also come with other risks and *coding* takes the most work compared to the other artistic endeavors. You can skin for 4 hours straight on a single skin (SYN!), but some people take that amount of time to make, debug, fix, and perfect a single mission or part of a mission in a long mod and that doesn't even include mapping. Then you'd need an actual story to draw on...fx...skins...meshes...maps...voices....objects...attributes...testers...

Now, I want you to sit down and think about this community. How many people fit those roles and how many are still active. You can scream ezscript all you want, but that doesn't matter when only a few people even got up to tackle the easier scripting. There's no real active fxers, there's a few skinners working on their long lists, there's 2 main meshers, no mappers active, no voicepack makers (and I mean actually making the voices with microphones, not compilers...and voices presents a whole new problem because who would voice all the originals characters?), no object makers beyond Beyonder and tiobe, attributes aren't coming out like they used to and none of Ian's stuff was implemented into FFX 3.2 sadly (IIRC), eh...testers come and go.

The fact that we keep having this discussion and no one has taken even a step forward should pretty much tell you how far that idea will go. The farthest people have gone is throwing out some ideas and maybe a few mesh pieces (Val) and that's it. Nothing more...nothing less. Sorry to say, and keep in mind; I'm the realist, I don't see any project going much further than all the others have unless a sudden surge hits everyone involved with the game. Also, I just can't help but think how Ken and other IG folks would feel if the community took over their characters and gave them a story the team didn't really want. I guess that's the writer in me more so than anything else.

*quietly injects Prev with his medicine*

That's it, Prev, take it like a big boy.  No tears, now.  Good!

Sorry you had to see that folks.  He gets a little testy without his nightly "Prevo's little helper."

Right! Seriously, Prev is correct (as was cat before him).  I know that occasionally DJ and I (actually, DJ does this constantly) carry a torch for the FFvTTR sequel that Symon prompted and for which Lunarman actually made a first level map, but I seriously doubt it will ever move forward relying, as it currently does, on unreliable louts such as myself to do the new character meshes.  I would need to quite teaching, leave my wife, abandon my child, and put my pug up for adoption before I am able to concentrate long enough to accomplish anything like a serious mod ("Why so serious? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!")--and my RL conflicts are hardly unique to this community.
