AVG Free is the best anti-virus program available as far as I'm concerned... it has caught the most viri, spyware, and bad things of any program that I've used thus far. The regestered (pay) version is even better if you want to add on the internet protection tools as well.

QFT.  AVG free was the only thing that was able to tackle my friends "Tower of Prn" (so he called his desktop).  Granted we ran it over and over for 3 days but it worked.

I've used computers with both, and have AVG on mine.  I've never had any problems with AVG, but Avast has given me a few headaches, based more around its controls and interface than its actual virus finding skills.

You really can't go wrong with either program... it's all personal preference. Another program you might want to look at is Avira Antivir (IIRC, it's was actually developed earlier by the same guys who eventually made AVG)... I've been using it for almost 6 years now and it's served me well in that time.

to the people who use avg  do you use the free version or do you buy the full thing

Pyroclasm

I use the free version of AVG.  It doesn't catch everything (like some browser hijackers) but that's why I use Spybot Search & Destroy as well.

Camma

Free version here as well.  And yes i also use Spybot and Adaware.

GGiant

Also get an anti-rootkit program Avg free doesn't cover that up and rootkits are used to hide virus.

I just got a message on AVG Free this morning-- apparently it's going to shut down in June? Or something?

Uncle Yuan

Not shut down - new version coming out that you'll need to down load.

GhostMachine

Adaware should usually get the job done if your anti-virus doesn't. I ended up dumping Spybot because I rarely, if ever, had to use it and its easy to screw things up if you don't know what you're doing when you use it, and someone else who uses this computer is an idiot when it comes to things like that.

I use McAfee because my ISP provides it for free, but I was using it before that. Had Norton for a while, and didn't care for it at all (the auto download updates got screwed up somehow for one thing, and those yellow screens are fugly).
