What do you think of the game?  I'm getting ready to load this on my computer.  Before I register I'm checking to see who is playing this game.  What are your names in this virtual world?  Registration asks who referred me, so I'd like to put one of your names down.  (I think there is some sort of referral program?)  Anyways, thanks for reading.

Kommando

Synthos and myself are fairly active.  Right now I am mostly working on my island and running my stores, though once the island is done I can go back to RPing more.  Some large images ahead.

some of us "stormed" a star wars party last night in full trooper uniform, heh heh, I have pics but only uploaded inworld, forgot to save to HD @_@

*sits patiently for Spud to interject his beliefs and comments on Second Life*

captainspud

Hey, until someone tries to call it a "game" or makes an attempt at extolling its virtues, I've got nothing to argue against. :P

UnfluffyBunny

ok, situation:
i'm in secondlife, roleplaying a stormtrooper.

I have HP, stamina, my trusty E11 carbine, and a wad of grenades.
I join a regiment, when we're not crashing parties we may be out looking for rebel scum.
i'm in character, they're in character, we're all having fun.

sounds like a game to me, really does >_>
unless of course, anyone would like to interject? maybe we can escalate and have the posting games forum renamed to posting text? and within a year we can outlaw dungeons and dragons?

or maybe we should all go into.... lets say WoW for example... and run round shouting OMFG WTF SUCH A NUB!!1! LOLOLOL and grind our brains our for no apparent reason? with no attachment to our characters, and then get bored and move onto another game, wash... rinse... repeat.

i'll let ya guess which one i'd say is more fun eh? so if you dont like my "game" go play your "game"

Cosplay ≠ game
On the contrary, Spud, if you liken SL to cosplay, you are likening SL to a complex form of Sprachspiel, which is a primal element of all but the mutest and least symbolic types of gaming (whatever they may be).

My argument has been that SL can SUPPORT games and HOST games, but is not, itself, a game. Simply having elements in common with games doesn't make it a game. Games can run on computers, but so does Excel. A game can use a ball, but so does water filtration. Games can involve keeping score, but so do elections.

If A has some, but not all, parts of B, A does not equal B.

(Check the "Migration?" thread in the CoH forum for the extended rant.)

ow_tiobe_sb

Perhaps my understanding of "game" is a great deal more liberal than your argument allows (for it would encompass activities such as elections, and power plays, and discourse), and perhaps I misinterpreted your pithy post above as a direct response to Syn's activities and not the activities of SL users in general.

Oh, are we doing this argument again? I've got to go home in a few minutes and don't have time to write up a big post, but if there's still any confusion when I get back from cards tonight, I'll be happy to oblige.

I recommend ignoring the person who comes into Second Life related threads purely to satify his own ego without any desire to contribute anything positive to the discussion.

From Wikipedia

QuoteTroll:  An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who intentionally posts controversial or contrary messages in an on-line community such as an on-line discussion forum or group with the singular intention of baiting users into an argumentative response.[1]

Just ignore him, he's in this thread for himself and no one else.  Its just sad that the moderators here let him get away with whatever he pleases.

captainspud

You'll notice that I attempted to stay out of it.

Find me one rule that I broke or bent in any way.

Just one.

Qwazy

oh grow up spud, you are being pathetic....not that i expected any more from you.

You dont like SL, now go off and whinge about it somewhere else.
geuss what, your opinions are just your opinions, nothing more than that.

oh and by the way, the edit button is there for a reason

WOOHOO!! +1!!!

UnfluffyBunny

i'm pretty sure i listed the whole HP and stamina thing in there... lemme go check.... yup... yup i did indeed.

so... I have hp, and stamina, and a fully operating combat system, and my carbine, and I roleplay, and engage in aforementioned combat, and thats apparently cosplay eh?

I'm not sure dearest spudly can get round the concept of actually playing a character, instead of just making him do things
(and since i'm already posting, he also cant tell this year is xmas 2007 :P, unless he's organising SS a year in advance ;) )

Right, you made a game inside the Second Life game engine.

Which is, yaknow, exactly what I've been saying you could do the whole time.

Doesn't make SL a game any more than IRC, C++, and paper are.

Wow, that was awfully random. We used the same hidden forum group as last year rather than making a new one. We all still have 2006 displayed. OMGWTFBBQ SPUD DUNT KNO WUT YR IT IZ!11!!!111!!1onehundredandeleven!!111!2

Honestly, is this the best you've got? Ad hominem attacks? And stupid ones, to boot?

I hate it when my opponents forfeit before we actually start playing. There's no sport in that.

UnfluffyBunny

maybe if you didnt consider everyone an oponent and declare yourself the victor of non-existant competition you'd enjoy life more.

holy monkey on a stick someone rename the thread "who's playing IN secondlife" so spud can stop wetting himself and bugger off to hunt billygoats

[edit]
btw, seeing as it bugged you so much, and your calling it an attack, feel free to report my last post to the mods, i'm pretty sure no-one else saw it as such

Reepicheep

I think Syn was referring to your Secret Santa 2008 thread - should be 2007.

*runs out of the thread*

As much as I hate to say it, I kind of agree with Spud. It's not a game so much as a 3d chat room you pay way too much money for. I've got a buddy who loves to quote, when Second Life is brought up in conversation, that the number one thing to get/purchase/whatever in Second Life is realistic genitalia.

You can "play" in the game, but you don't actually "play" the game. Maybe I just lack imagination and need a set of rules and obstacles, as well as rewards, in order to consider something a game.

Of course stuff like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Life_issues_and_criticisms doesn't help the "game" along either.

BentonGrey

Don't encourage him, no good can come of that at all.

gdaybloke

I think this has gone entirely far enough.  This thread was posted to find out who else was playing Second Life. If you're not playing Second Life, then you have no business in this thread.

As for trolls, don't feed them. As for accusations of moderator bias, try reporting the thread next time. Not all of us are on the forums at 4:20 in the afternoon.

Next post that does not directly relate to the thread's topic (ie, someone posting "I am!") gets the thread locked.

Pyroclasm

Anyways, any recommendations from SL'ers on getting started?  I signed up and installed SL.  My first outing was less than spectacular.  Basically spent an hour trying to figure out how to customize my avatar and left frustrated because I ended up with the same basic avatar except with a null pant texture. :/  I'm actually trying to learn SL because my boss is considering doing some teleconferencing in it.

Edit:
I changed the thread title.

Kommando

I'd recommend the SL forums, but its only accessible for paid accounts.  Check out this link, and download the SLCP.  Then you can head here and get the templates needed to make clothing and skins.  SLCP is kind of the equivalent of the Ctool, and will help you with making stuff, since I figure you'll want to skin.  Just try to keep textures at 512x512 pixels.  You can go, to 1024, but everyone who sees you has to load the textures.  As for making the clothes themselves.  You can make a folder in your inventory, and then right click on the folder to make clothing pieces.  Then put the pieces you want on, and edit them in Alter Appearance mode by right clicking on yourself.  You can add your textures by uploading them, though each upload costs 10L (about 4cents).  However, I think you start out with 400L so you have a bit you can do.  Of course, Synthos and I probably have a ton of stuff we can give you to wear.

Though part of me is wondering if I should just direct you to the furries right away :P.  Actually, you could look for an island called Limbo.  That might be your speed, its where the dragons live.

Podmark

I'm taking a class this semester about the posthuman and we'll be studying Second Life. First I heard of it but I guess I'm going to have to give it a try. I looked it up a bit and it seems kinda interesting.

The_Baroness

Well it isvery interesting indeed... it can be just a glorified chat with cool graphics and options... or could be a lot more... depends on what are you doing there and how much money are you going to invest... for instance i once got a mandalorian armor that if i remember correctly was around 5000 Lindens... but.. i'm more armed than a tank with that thing on.... thermal dets, blasters, rockets... so.. find the simulator you want (you have star wars themed ones,  warhammer 40k, cyberpunk, vampires... whatever) get the needed items and you are set.

UnfluffyBunny

the mandalorian armour would have been 2500 I believe, and made by Dazzo Street :P
he also made the stormtrooper armor I posted in a different thread, he's a friend of mine and kommando's (well.. more a friend of K's but I bug him about scripts a fair bit :P)

Actually Dazzo's armor was 5000L when it first came out.  Then it got prim ripped, so he rebuilt it and made it better and the price came down later.  He has a shop called Ad Infinitim, which is one of the one's featured in the skymall of my sim, Imperial City.
