Ok, a late addition to this discussion just for fun.   I would add the Southern Squadron!  Aussie heroes produced by Aussies!  Like many of the heroes I seem to gravitate towards they are done rather tongue and cheek.  The Southern Squadron are:

•   Lieutant Smith, a female Australian military operative who commands the team. Really she is just a "highly trained" character with superior martial fighting skills.
•   Nightfighter, a a beer-swilling ocker from Melbourne who surges with super strength when ever he gets excited (according to his creator, David de Vries, he is a combination of The Hulk and Batman). The Nightfighter's battlecry being "Hold on to your braincells!", a rip-off of the Thing's trademark "It's clobbering time".
•   Southern Cross, a young, trendy North Shore fashion designer from Sydney with psychokinetic powers. Southern Cross has a power-cane, which he needs to amplify his powers so he can fly.
•   Dingo, the werewolf son of a Serbian immigrant (who fills a similar sort of role to that of the Beast in X-Men, or the Thing in the Fantastic Four, according to de Vries).

Great stuff that...and that's fair dinkum!

What makes a Kirby Hulk a Kirby Hulk?

Jack Kirby was one of the most stylized aritists who ever put pencil to paper. He was far more intersted in telling a story than looking realistic, so his characters had somewhat unusual musculature. He, like Ditko, Toth, Eisner, Cole, and others, developed a kind of pen-an-ink shorhand that managed to convey realism, without actually being all that "realistic". At the time he started, many of the comic series in the newstand books were written, drawn, inked, and even lettered by the same person, if they weren't done by a "shop". It was a time when stylists were the ones you recognized (since they seldom got ot sign their work). So many artist were average, or worse, that the few standouts went on to beome near legends.

If you want to know if Kirby did a cover, look at the knees, they're a dead giveaway. His arms and legs didn't always twist and bend like they should, but somehow it worked. Layouts were sometimes a bit strained in the perspective department, but the story zoomed along from dynamic pose to dynamic pose at breakneck pace. He was one of the few artists who could sweep me along in a story so that I didn't even see the final secret in the last panel until I got to it. With a minimum of lines, he drew buldging thews and massive muscles. Some of his inkers added feathering to the forms, but most just followed the squiggley lines Kirby drew that represented the human form.

And if I put a squiggle on a chin, it looks like my pencil slipped; when Kirby did it, it looked masculine.

So, do I follow standard anatomy, or do I follow Kirby? Is the head and hair the main thing, or should I keep the muscular definition to a minimum? What about squiggles?

Posted over in the Skins forum is a non-Kirby Hulk I'm working on. Look at it, and if you have reprints of those first few Hulk stories, look at them and look back at my non-Kirby Hulk. Tell me what you think.

daglob

Well, I guess everybody's still thinking about it.

Anway, here is a "first draft", basically starting to put shadows on the muscles and figure out where everything is.

I have kept the musculature to a minimum, and tried to figure out how I would shade a Kirby drawing if I turned it into a painting. Im not sure if the medium shade of green I used as a base is right, but I can change that when the time comes. Bluer, perhaps?

Nice thing about Photoshop, I can do a variety of faces (this one, snarl, roar), and not have to start the whole thing over. When I'm done, I intend to make a gray copy of it also.

detourne_me

Nice base!  i'm excited to see a finished product!   kirby hulk rocks!,  now we need a kirby thing too :)

daglob

Here's our boy in a gray study (all done with a little de-saturation layer).

Those look really great - I especially love the green.
Sorry if the mapping is a little goofy; not being a skinner, I'm never sure whether it's easier to make the maps flatter or to make them curved so there's less distortion.

YoungHeros

Is that just great or what?!

detourne_me

Daglob! Wow dude,  i love the grey hulk,  it's really impressive what a few well-placed highlights will do to a skin.  your style reminds me of Atomic Robot's,  and thats great, since he was a king of Silver Age characters too.

My dream mesh or skin.....A batman mesh made by Ren (or Fusion) and skinned by C6(or TUE). :P :D
And a hulk mesh by Ren(or Fusion) with the snowman keyframes mixed with all possible male_hulking keyframe sets skinned by C6(or TUE). :P :D

herodad1

i think hulk needs a snarl look.showing a little teeth.

HumanTon

Yes, to me Kirby = mouth open!

daglob

Ah!, then you'll like this version:

I'm trying to see how far I can get his mouth opened before it starts to look funny. I "greened" him up a bit, too.

herodad1

excellent!now he needs released so i can go re-arrange gamma base!hulk smash!

detourne_me

wow,  he's looking even better now!

daglob

Well, if you think he's ready, I'll send the skin to Yellow Lantern and he can release it.

You know, I've been watching old Thundercats episodes the last few days, and I've gotten to thinkinging....I would REALLY love to see the Thundercats all meshed and skinned for FF.  I know someone (I believe it was TUE) did an incredibly awesome Lion-O, but I'd love to see the other cats, and all their villains in game.  When you think about it, they'd fit in REALLY well in FF, probably the best of all the Saturday morning cartoons from back then.

catastrophe

My dream mesh for a long time is a demonic mesh with alot of spikes and horns and a coatlike robe, like Carthus from the Inhumans.

Wingzero actually did quite a few Thundercat meshes, actually.

Lord Elcorion

yanno.. i'd love to see the Bugs from Starship Troopers. i also have to second the request from the first page for the Knightsabers, and add on their Moto-slaves and a Boomer. i'd also like to see meshes of the gundams from Gundam Wing, in particular Epyon and Wing Zero movie version.

BentonGrey

Whoops, my mistake, I found the readme, and it was actually done by Zivon23.

gengoro

My most wanted dream mesh has already been made which was Archangel with animated wings.  I have others though :D.

Original Weapon X Wolverine: The original version with wires, helmet(with or without)

Feral Fire: Old city of heroes character I made.
