Here's the list:

Albums #1-50

Albums #51-100

I only started buying my own CDs and cassettes around the early to mid-1990s (prior to that, most of "my music" was actually my dad's or my older brother's, which was mostly guitar-oriented blues, folk, and rock music from the 1960s, 1970s, and a bit of 1980s thrash and speed metal, and almost all of it featuring American or British artists). I'd gotten into a special government program that paid a monthly stipend in exchange for staying out of trouble and getting good grades in school and instead of spending it on books and school supplies like a good little boy, I went and bought Ozzy Osbourne's "No More Tears" (and a couple of American comic books) with my first cheque. It was actually my first real foray into "current" music, because prior to that, I was pretty much stuck in a time-warp populated by the Beatles, Bob Marley, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, and Carole King.

Anyway, of the 100 albums listed in the article, here are the ones I actually bought more or less during the time of their release (although I've only kept a handful of them to this day):

3. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
7. Santana - Supernatural
12. Metallica - Metallica
26. Jewel - Pieces of You (it was for my girlfriend! really!)
27. Eric Clapton - Unplugged
29. Nirvana - Nevermind
31. No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom
48. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
56. Stone Temple Pilots - Core
57. Faith Hill - Breathe (another "girlfriend purchase")
58. Sarah Mclachlan - Surfacing
68. Red Hot Chili Peppers - BloodSugarSexMagik
96. Blues Traveler - Four

Glitch Girl

Geez, I have a whopping 2 albums from both lists and I've got a couple hundred CDs.

Guess I'm even less mainstream than I thought.

Heres what happens when you've had a steady paper route with money saved up for a few years, then you start a better part-time job.
and then you think its a good idea to join Colombia House and BMG...

Hmm....
Smashing Pumpkins
Pearl Jam
Offspring
Sarah Mclaughlin
Oasis

Geeze, I guess my musical taste must suck as I only owned 5 of the 90's top selling albums.

Camma

Wow, what a scary journey into past musical trend mistakes:

Although I don't listen to the bands currently, Im not ashamed at all to have purchased:

Metallica - Metallica (last of the Metallica "metal" albums)
Nirvana - Nevermind (when the first chords of Smells Like Teen Spirit first played thousands of shredders were cast down from their rock-god pedestals)
Stone Temple Pilots - Core (maybe scott weiland shoulda kept on whatever he was on)

I wouldn't say im still a fan of these bands anymore or even of these albums i bought:

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Dr. Dre - Chronic2001
G'n'R - Use Your Illusion (1 and 2!!!)
Limp Bizkit - Significant Other
Pearl Jam - Vs.

Yee gods, what was I doing back then?:

Cranberries - No need to argue (not sure if i bought this or my roomate, but there was extensive play time so ill chalk it up to me)
Vanilla Ice - To the Extreme (My legal counsel has advised me not to comment)

Don't feel too bad, GG.  I have a whole ½ an album from the list.  I didn't even know that there *was* a 2-disc version of Bat Out Of Hell II.  U2 & the Eagles were on the maybe list, but I was never convinced either of them were worth the buy (even used).

And considering what mainstream *was* during most of the 90's, not being part of it isn't necessarily a bad thing.

*has bad flashbacks of Hansen & The Spice Girls playing on the radio, all day long*

I much prefer the top 100 selling of all time list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_in_the_United_States
*note: I looked for worldwide numbers, but apparently they're hard to quantify, legitimately.

This era represents me from age 10 to 19 (1990-1999) and you will notice the bulk of the music I owned from that list is from 1990 to 1995, at which point I was much more into metal and other stuff. Some of these I bought, some I pirated and some I inherited from my sister or an ex girlfriend but all in all this is an accurate list.

3. Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill
12. Metallica- Metallica
18. Pearl Jam- Ten
29. Nirvana- Nevermind
33. Green Day- Dookie
39. Smashing Pumpkins- Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
56. Stone Temple Pilots- Core
68. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood Sugar Sex Magik
69. Guns N' Roses- Use Your Illusion
76. Pearl Jam- Vs.
89. Stone Temple Pilots- Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
97. Offspring- Smash
98. Mana- Donde Jugaran los Niños?

EDIT: Anybody on this forum ever own that Mana album? I'm curious how it did since it's pretty much all you have on the list for foreign language. I consider good but it's no "cuando los angeles lloran" which was amazing.

Didn't own it but I was definitely aware of it (granted, I don't think my musical exposure was representative of the norm for most of the Philippines at the time... IIRC, their very limited popularity in socialist/left-of-center college circles was buoyed by their outward support of the Zapatista Army).

GrizzlyBearTalon

96. Blues Traveler- Four

The only thing on that list I have even in some way semi owned would be that album, and it wasn't even mine it was my dads.

Not that I haven't heard some of those CDs or anything... I'm just flat out not really into music. I don't think I have actually purchased a CD or even "obtained" any new music in years. I can appreciate music of various styles and genres but other than randomly hearing something by coincidence or having someone say "hey listen to this" is about as close to fooling with music as I get.

Pyroclasm

3. Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill
23. Mariah Carey- Music Box
26. Jewel- Pieces of You
28. Mariah Carey- Daydream
31. No Doubt- Tragic Kingdom
40. Mariah Carey- Mariah Carey
63. Cranberries- No Need to Argue
82. MeatLoaf- Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell

Was totally in love with Mariah Carey in high school/early college before her style incorporated too much "urban" for my tastes.  Now I have a set of CDs in my "To Ebay" box.
Still adore Jewel, and have each of her albums.  Saw her in concert.  She's wonderful.
Also a big fan of Alanis.  Hope to see her in concert someday.
Love the Cranberries and Meatloaf rocks.  (Mmmm...Sounds like a dinner!)  Still listen to those albums fairly regularly too.
I own 100+ CDs easily, and those few were the only ones on the list.

Thank god for audio-encoding software... I think I had close to 300 CDs, cassettes, and LPs (mostly bargain-bin finds and hand-me-downs) before moving to Canada and there was no way I could bring all but my very favourite ones with me (the shipping costs alone would have killed me)., although it's a shame that real loss-less recording hadn't been developed back then.

Kid Rock- Devil Without A Cause
Creed- Human Clay

Dr. Dre- 2001
