Title: Movie Ironhide Complete!
Post by: Valandar on June 15, 2007, 11:30:58 PM
Okay, so I know I said I wouldn't do any Autobots or Decepticons from the movie or third season... but this guy ain't exactly an Autobot or Decepticon, is he?

Hrms... wonder how long he'll take to skin and animate...

And that is one awesome alien.

Doesn't he appear in the last episode of beast wars as well?

And it's Quintesson, actually.

Not as far as I know. The only non-Terran, Non-Cybertronian life forms that show up in Beast Wars are the Vok.

BTW, for size reference, he's about the size of the "Autobo Car" meshes - you know, like Bluestreak and Sideswipe.

Not quite. He's from the 1986 Transformers animated movie.

The idea is that in the ancient past, the Quintessons are a bio-cybernetic race that either created or enslaved the Transformers (they claim they created them, other sources claim enslaved), and mass-marketed them as servants and combat machines across the galaxy (which explains the presence of other mechanical life in the galaxy, such as the Paradrons and the Lithonians - Paradrons show up in Season 3, and Lithone is the planet that becomes an intergalactic Happy Meal for Unicron at the beginning of TF:TM).

Eventually, however, the Transformers rebelled and drove the Quintessons off Cybertron, wrecking their 'business' and pretty much isolating them on Quintessa. They become embittered, and declare all mechanical life "guilty" of "stealing Cybertron". An individual may be "innocent", i.e., was not present at the time the Quintessons were kicked off Cybertron, but they're fed to the Sharkticons, anyway. The Quintesson I show above is one of the "Judges", who are also the leaders of the race. There are a wide variety of other forms, including Scientists, Bailiffs, Prosecutors, and others, and the only Cybertronian "life" they still control are the Sharkticons and Gatorcons (in TF:TM, Kupp and Hot Rod spark a Sharkticon rebellion, but this is quelled and the Sharkticons back under Quintesson control by the time of Season 3's episode "Five Faces of Darkness").

Post by: Valandar on June 17, 2007, 02:35:06 AM
For these guys? They're not really that powerful, that's what their legions of Sharkticons are for.

I'd say a Strength of about 3-4, Endurance maybe 5-6, Power of 6, and the rest at 2-3. And they have never shown any attacks, but that's not to say they can't whip lightly with their tentacles or blast energy beams from their eyes...

Oh, here's an image with the skin. I added a couple layers of Meshsmooth, so it's... well... smoother than the low poly version...

Animating it might take me a while, I gots me some serious $$$ work suddenly piling up.

Title: Re: From oblivion I return... with a WIP!

I should qualify here...

1 ) I actually rather LIKED the Beast Wars cartoon. I did NOT like the toys, because TOO many of them were "Stand up, flip the head back/forward, use the tail as a sword" type of transform. On the other hand, I did NOT like the Beast machines show OR toys.

2 ) Looking at what TF: Cybertron figures I have, I am becoming SORELY tempted to make meshes for them. The polycount would end up being higher than for the GeeWun figures because, unlike them, I won't have to "cheat" to give articulation. One Cybertron/Galaxy Force already has a mesh (I'm using it for War Within Starscream. :P )

3 ) I hate the movie designs. Period. Someone once described them (I think somewhere here) as "Terminator endoskeletons with car vomit all over them". BUT... some of the movie figures are actually pretty durn good, especially the figs for characters that... um... well, don't actually appear in the movie, but rather in the game. :D The Real Gear figs also look pretty good. HOWEVER - none of them look good enough for me to make figures for.

4 ) As I did with Starscream (see a trend?), I'm considering making some revised meshes for certain characters based on the Classics toyline. However - this does not include HotRod ("Rodimus") as I dun like the character, or Astrotrain as I dun like the figure. And any others would still be up in the air.

5 ) The upcoming "Transformers: Animated" has me both worried and a bit looking forward. On the one hand, the art on that poster is ATROCIOUS. On the other, it has more than a bit of "GeeWun" flavor to it, which means the line for it might end up being VERY similar to Classics - that is, classic characters re-done with todays technolody and articulation.

I can really respect, and for the most part agree with everything you just said.

As for the animated series, well it's not really the kind of style I'm into, but I felt the same way when I first heard of Clone Wars, and now I have both DVDs.

1)  Agreed.  Beast Wars was quite well done...Beast Machines, on the other hand... *pukes*

2)  For some reason, I loved Cybertron at first, and ran out to buy Prime.  Lately, though, I've started to actually resent the series/line for some reason... I'm not 100% sure why, either.

3)  I'm one of those who actually really like the new movie designs.  They're new, refreshing...and there was a LOT of thought put into them.

I DO hate Prime's flames though...seriously, what would give someone the idea to pimp Optimus Prime?

I do feel it's a shame that you're not making any movie meshes, but I mean, it's pretty understandable for a few reasons:

-First, and most importantly, if you don't like the designs...well...why would you waste hours and hours of time making something you hate?
-Secondly...the designs are WAYYYY too freaking complicated.

Still, if you've got any advice on which parts I could use to make an Optimus_movie hex on your TF versatile, any help would be appreciated.

5)  The whole Transformers: Animated thing is scaring me... really, truly scaring me.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Quintesson doesn't wanna export.

So, I'm gonna try my hand at one of the Transformers: Cybertron figures:

Unlike most of the other car/truck form TF's, this one isn't gonna have a separate vehicle mesh (yet). Instead he's going to have a melee animation where he backflips, transforming as he does so, then rams the enemy, and transforms back. :D

I still have to make the launch FX 2-sided, as well as re-hide the "display box" (used to make the FX visible, but I didn't need it at this angle) and fix a bizarre little quirk that just spawned. Should be done tonight.

Title: Re: From oblivion I return... with a WIP!
Post by: Valandar on July 06, 2007, 12:56:00 AM
Thanks. I recently started using a new technique set when I make the skins, based on making a hi-res version of the model by smoothing it (with smooth groups to delineate sharp edges), and using a gradient global to "bake on"fake shading and what's called ambient occlusion, then save those out as maps to overlay and/or multiply onto the Diffuse skin in question. :D The fine details (like the lights, the grill on the front, and so on) are painted on, while the metal plates are a pattern I set to overlay,as an example.

By the way, I included a "base skin" for the main robot in the zip file. I didn't include one for the extras (the rifle and missiles), but since they're 90% grey, it wouldn't be TOO hard to lighten it up amd turn the red grey. The new proccess makes it a lot easier to make "base skins", you see, so I might be including them in the future.

And if you want alternate skin ideas, BotCon recently repainted the Armorhide toy as Huffer, with an orange main body and blue limbs, and there's going to be a "Sector Seven Target Exclusive" repaint of Armorhide (though with the same name) that has been nicknamed "Nemesis Huffer", since it's charcoal grey, medium grey, and with touches of aqua (like the original Scourge / Nemesis Prime).

OH MY GOD, THAT MISSILE LAUNCH LOOKS INCREDIBLE IN ACTION!!!  :o

Seriously, Val...that's gotta be one of the sweetest animations to ever be seen in Freedom Force.  Excellent, excellent work.

Also, I took a look at the transform/ram animation at a slower rate in ctool.  The transformation is very detailed...the majority of it is all the actual parts of the bot mode just moving into place, and that's just incredible.

Okay, a poll for the next one I do...

Should it be this one?

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=761&size=0&start=0  (Note the repaint in the line of Swerve - http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=780&size=0&start=0 , and a repaint coming up in blue)

This one?

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=795&size=0&start=0

This one?

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=678&size=0&start=0

This one?

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=568&size=0&start=0

This one ?

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=569&size=0&start=0 (or GTS Repaint here: http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=951&size=0&start=0 and 'cop type' repaint here: http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=952&size=0&start=0 )

This one?

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=774&size=0&start=0

Or this one?

http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=779&size=0&start=0  (with alternate 'hovercar' transform for flight and hovering animations - fan made mode, but hey)

I should note that is about the limit of what I have of Cybertron, and probably won't make any of the figures I don't have.

As for the Classics, we have:

This one:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=927&size=0&start=0  (with repaint here: http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=1082&size=0&start=0 )

This one:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=1051&size=0&start=0

This one:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=1002&size=0&start=0

Or this one:
http://www.seibertron.com/toys/gallery.php?id=1050&size=0&start=0

There is a chance... a SLIGHT chance... that I might make some of the Real Gears or 2007 movie characters. If I make some of the 2007 movie characters, they will be based mostly on their toy forms so I can use them for proportions and such.
Title: Re: From oblivion I return... with a WIP!

Cybertron:  Crosswise or Swindle

Classics:  Grimlock, for sure.  :D

The Slight Chance of a Movie Mesh:  You would be my GOD if you made movie Prime, but really, anything from the movie would be cool.  The real gears would be neat, too, in their own way...they'd be very tiny onscreen compared to ANYTHING else, which would be interesting.
Title: Re: From oblivion I return... with a WIP!

cybertron:Swerve

classics:bumblebee

I wish cybertron-hotshot was a choice. I just always liked him.

EDIT: Changed my decision to swerve.
Title: Re: From oblivion I return... with a WIP!
Post by: Valandar on July 07, 2007, 03:42:35 PM
Meh, I never liked him, mainly because the toy has a very awkward shoulder arrangement. Like I said, I didn't get a lot of Cybertron, mainly because I was a little shallower of pocket.

As for the Movie characters, the potentials are:

Real Gear Longview

Real Gear Zoom Out

Real Gear Booster X-10 (Not likely, unfortunately, as I don't have the time to make brand new animation sets right now)

Possibly more as I get them.

((The Real Gears would actually be about 2/3 human height, for ease of game play. More on them later))

Jazz (based on Deluxe Jazz)

Bumblebee (based on 2008 Deluxe Bumblebee - not available until later in the month)

Ironhide (based on Voyager Ironhide)

Ratchet (based on Voyager Ratchet)

Barricade (based on Deluxe Barricade)

Brawl (based on Deluxe Brawl)

Wreckage (based on Deluxe Wreckage. Note: Though not actually a character in the movie, he was one of the intended characters)

IF I did Prime, it would have to be based on the Leader Class, and I only have the Voyager class (smaller, much better oseability and overall a nicer toy, but not as "movie accurate" in its transform scheme, leaving it with a large 'backpack')

Now, as for the Real Gears, here's what I was thinking:
Basically, since they have no guns or anything, their "Idle" pose would be, instead of just standing around, laying around in object mode. Melee Idle would be unaffected, and the original idle would be available via hexxing as "idel" or some nonsense like that. The ranged animations in the 'standard Transformers' set that have guns would have them doing something funky based on their alt mode instead - as an example, Zoom Out would become a video camera that shoots, Longview would turn into his binos and shoot, and so on.  Sound good?

Oh, and these meshes WILL have a "Handle" node if I make them, so if you prefer a more G1 flavor you could hex them to the size of a typical Minibot. :D
Title: Re: From oblivion I return... with a WIP!
Post by: The Pwime on July 07, 2007, 03:49:55 PM
Out of the movie toys, I've got:  Deluxe Jazz, Deluxe Barricade...and... Leader Prime.  If you need pics, videos, anything...I could make some.  Of course, it depends on if your actually interested in making Prime, and I don't want to sound like I'm trying to force it on you.

...Even though I am.

Just kidding.  :P

And the real gears have got me excited.  You've already figured out an awesome way of putting them in the game (animations, size, etc).   :D

Meh, I never liked him, mainly because the toy has a very awkward shoulder arrangement. Like I said, I didn't get a lot of Cybertron, mainly because I was a little shallower of pocket.

Oh well, It really doesn't matter who you do. It is still gonna be an amazing mesh. And don't worry about the deepness of your pockets. I don't even have pockets(figuratively speaking of course).

*shrug* It's how I made the Armorhide mesh so accurate.

Hey Valandar, that render looks completely awesome as-is...
... did you do anything to it to get those soft shadows?  I've tried a bit of 3D modelling before, in Poser and Bryce, but that is amazing looking!  Is it something you can do in 3DStudio?

It's something you COULD do in 3D Studio... version 6 or higher, unfortunately. I did it in a program called X-Normal, and it's called an "Ambient Occlusion Map". It's basically rendering a high contrast soft lighting scene directly to the texture template instead of to a picture. You get a nice greyscale map that you can then overlay, multiply, or whatever on top of your original texture maps.

If I had the Skillz, I could take Male Basic, ramp up his polycount and shape muscles into him, then use that to 'bake' an Ambient Occlusion map that would have the end result of acting like a greyscale base skin.

And the Armorhide mesh IS extremely accurate.  Absolutely beautiful in-game as well, I might add.

PS.  I took a look at the mesh in nifskope, and...I love how he even has a ball joint under his neck.  :)

That's actually something the "real" Armorhide doesn't have, but was needed for the way meshes animate in FF.

Valandar, you should post those options for stuff for you to make in the polls board. You could get more voters that way.

Yup it's called a 'render to texture'.

Great to see you back Val^^

As I mentioned, I've started doing the schtick where you render to texture, using a hi-res version of the mesh as the base.

And since Movie Ironhide seems to be winning the poll, I started work on a hires Ironhide head:

Note that, unfortunately, the Ironhide mesh will not actually transform in game - there's just waaay too many parts sliding and moving and stuff, so he'll have a secondary "Topkick" mesh along with him.

But, like Armorhide, I -WILL- include a "base skin" for those that want to give him a new paint job... :D

And the actual game mesh's head!

I need to clean up the "ears", but otherwise it seems pretty good to me. :D

And a warning... Ironhide will also likely end up being pretty high polygon, probably... the head, alone, is 290 polys

The hi-res Ironhide body is moving slowly. Looks like some of the detail will have to be added in Photoshop, anyway...

It's POSSIBLE... I have the Big Cat keyframes I made for the Big Cat mesh and the Predacons, but right now I really don't have a "Bird of Prey" keyframe set.

On the other hand, I -DO- currently own Ravage and Laserbeak. They come with the reissue of Soundwave ($35, currently available as a Toys R Us exclusive). :D

Oh, and as I promised, there will be a base skin for the Ironhide mesh included, in case you decide you want to make your own skin for him:

Right now I have the upper torso and arms complete, along with his forearm guns. The hips and legs are next, then I bake in the details, and use Photoshop to add in the finer details.

Hey, really nice job. Are you going to make a BumbleBee mesh and skin, from the movie.
Title: Re: Movie Ironhide WIP shots
Post by: Valandar on July 23, 2007, 07:58:34 PM
-IF- i do, it'll have to wait until I can get ahold of the 2008 Bumblebee Deluxe toy. As for what's coming after Ironhide, here. well, I have a poll in the Polls section of the forums, and Classics Grimlock looks to be winning.

At this point in time, the actual 3D mesh for Ironhide is complete - I am rendering to texture now, then I'll start adding all the various details to the skin that I couldn't model onto the hires version (for time reasons).

Of course!

And the Render To Texture is nearly complete, by the way. Then I add details, rig it, modify the ranged animation from my default TF keyframes, and let 'er rip!

Okay, the rendered detail and shading is done. Now to add further surface detail (to both the standard and the base skins), and rigging time!

Maaaaan, that looks tidy. Hope you don't mind that i'm already thinking of other uses for this mesh in games of FF, mainly end boss robot enemies?
I really like the twin wrist guns, are you planning on having a range of animations with a different number of shots? sometimes meshes come without a single shot animation, leading to HUGE power costs.
Title: Re: Movie Ironhide WIP shots
Post by: Valandar on July 23, 2007, 11:59:58 PM
Oh, don't worry.

There'll be single shot, four shot burst, and sixteen shot OMG BARRAGE! animations. :D

BTW, the skinning is almost done. :D

Of course, Val's fantastic mesh is based on the designs of the toy version of that character.. unlike the movie designs which never heard of the "KISS" (keep it simple, stupid) principle in design. I managed to get a few transformation clips from the movie and you just see a CGI blurr of parts moving around before it reaches vehicle mode - ILM never seemed to think like the toy designers by having less steps in moving those parts around between modes. Sure the robot mode looks a bit more like their disquise but that was a big element in their original cartoon versions anyway.

Great work Val..... downloading as I type.
