Star Trek: Into Darkness - More Awesome Than I Thought

Without going into a lot of detail, today I got to see Star Trek: Into Darkness.  In 3D.  For free.

Which is good, because it really wasn't on my must-see list.  But if I had known, it would have been.  I highly recommend the 3D part, by the way.

No major spoilers here from me.  At least not yet.

Star Trek purists won't like parts of it.  But there are several very heavy nods to a certain previous Star Trek movie from before the JJ-verse, and a certain scene in particular.  Fans of that movie will squee.  And there are Klingons, but they aren't a large part of the movie.  And lots of awesome scenes, some of which are in 3D.

Original series Klingons or TNG Klingons?   Maybe you should answer that.

"We do not discuss it with outsiders."

Just saw it. I loved it! Even better than the first one.

NOT.

Which is to say, "these are not the Klingons you're looking for..."

But if you want a better answer than that...

Spoiler
They definitely have forehead ridges.  And sharp knives/swords.  They were definitely more TNG than TOS inspired.  Beyond that, they wear masks in battle and their ships only superficially resemble Birds-of-Prey... but as they are encountered within Qo'NoS' atmosphere it's possible they were actually some other kind of small ship.

And one man took out a whole squad of Klingons by himself, which I don't much agree with even under the circumstances.

Technically, forehead-ridged Klingons come from the Original Series movies, not TNG.  They're in Star Trek 1, 3, 4 and 5, at least briefly, all before the Next Generation was on TV.

I guess the wrath will be directed against a different individual if there's a follow up.

I saw this movie yesterday on IMAX 3D thanks to the girlfriend.  She broke up with me more than a month ago then wanted to get back together.  This was a good start (Ladies love the thalaw!).  Anyway, this was the best Star Trek move...EVER!  I found it a bit predictable but even with that it was good.  Much better than the first IMO.  Action was great, story kept moving, good plot development at the right times.  Hollywood has learned the formula well....however movies like this are not very cerebral and if you are like me then you can't completely get lost in the movie because of certain nonsensical holes.

Spoiler
How big is Starfleet in this movies?
Why didn't Earth have defenses against Khan's ship coming in?
The Klingons don't have warp?  How was first contact made?

I think it's obvious that the next movie will be war with the Klingons.

Haha, good for you, man.

Well, that sounds promising!  The wife and I will be going to see this later on in the next month.  We're pretty excited!

What really got her some brownie points is that I thought we were going to see Oblivion, because I didn't see a Star Trek poster at the theater.  then when she was paying for the tickets I saw a trailer for Star Trek and started to ask about that, but I didn't know the Chinese for it.  I was crazy excited when a few minutes into the movie i realized it wasn't Oblivion.

I enjoyed quite a bit even if the wife did not. She didn't like the parallels drawn with the old material.  Chris Pines Kirk is  adequate but nothing more . I think its mostly how he's written but I don't care  for his voice. It was however IMO  not as good as

I saw this tonight with the wife and some friends, and I loved it!  It's got flaws, the biggest of which is:
Spoiler
the fuzzy motivations and somewhat inconsistent characterization of the admiral.
Still, I enjoyed the movie so much that I was easily able to get past them.  In the end, you know it's a great experience when the thing that galls you most about the movie is that there isn't more of it to enjoy!  I'll post more thoughts later.

I enjoyed quite a lot but the wife didn't as much. She thought the reverse parallels to the other universe were unoriginally done. She especially hated the reverse scream. It wasn't the equal of the wrath of Khan  though. Since kirk was almost a footnote to this Khan we'll never have that rivalry although we may have one with  Spock. My biggest issue is still the new Kirk is growing or growing on me fast enough. Everyone else id progressing to full heroic status much more quickly . ( and on a petty note , can he just win a hand to hand fight with someone significant like the old Kirk.)
