Title: Doctor Strange Movie
Post by: Figure Fan on October 27, 2014, 07:15:10 PM
Benedict Cumberbatch is Stephen Strange:

Also, I couldn't find an existing thread for this, so hopefully it's ok that I created a new topic.

Nice choice.  Looked him up on IMDB and he's been around.  I wonder if in the future there will be a Defenders movie?

Seems this isn't 100% confirmed just yet but I really hope this is true. I'm a big Cumberbatch fan, he's awesome in Sherlock and in Star Trek, but I'm not a big Strange fan, so putting an actor I like in the role is a nice perk.

Just a rumor apparently. I don't believe there was anything to it.

They key phrase is "negotiations are about to begin" so he hasn't actually agreed to anything, at least not finally.

Hopefully it will work out though. I think he's be brilliant.

Bendynoodle Crumberpants is gonna play Stephen Strange?  I hope that Bandicoot Crumblycake will do justice to the role.

Hmm...interesting choice.  He's certainly got the presence, but I'm not sure.

Joaquin Phoenix was reputedly very close to signing, but balked at the multi-movie deal Marvel insists on.  Which is great, if Benedict Cumberbatch is cast!  He's awesome, but hasn't had a chance to show it really on the big screen yet.

I gotta be honest, I think this Marvel movie so far has probably the best cast so far.  These guys are standouts!

That said, I hope he's not playing Dormammu.  It's hard to get the intricacies of the actor when your head's on fire.  Mephisto however...

Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One? Really? Does everything need to be modernized?

Does it really matter?  Would you rather have Ben Kingsley play the Ancient One?

I actually would not mind that.  I don't think him bad at all, and honestly, the only reason why he gets a bad rap is because of what they did to the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 which was NOT his fault.

It would be odd to see him playing two characters in the MCU, though :P

@Benton: Hahaha, if only, right?  Hoss is talking about Dr. Strange's and Baron Mordo's teacher, the Ancient One.  Former Sorceror Supreme and Master of the Mystical.

Ha!  Right Shogunn!

Spyder, I know the character, I was making a joke about the rather strange look of Tilda Swinton. ;)

Tilda's gonna be amazing. She never disappoints, and really her becoming Marvel alumni fits with some of her recent co-stars, Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston. Eventually everyone will become a character in the MCU!

Awesome.  This so made my day.  He looks fantastic, right on target for the comic appearance, and darn it if Cumberbach doesn't look PERFECT as Strange.  Take note WB/DC, THIS is how you honor source material.  I'm getting excited about this film!

Well, for whatever it's worth, he was played by black voice actor Kevin Micheal Richardson in the animated film.

Though the rumour currently circulating...
Spoiler
is that Mordo is not the villain in this film.  That honour goes to Mads Mikkelson (sp?), whose character has not yet been announced.

Well, 1) I love that actor, and I'm sure he'll do a good job, unlike the guy playing Aquaman, but 2) I DO hate it when they switch a character's race for no reason.

Still a better casting choice then Will Smith as Deadshot.
Who could Mads play?Hood maybe?

What do you think are the chances of Hulk making a cameo in the Dr. Strange movie?  It would be cool to see 2/3 of the original defenders.

And new photos and video.  It might just be me, but the collar seems even higher now.  It's like their reaction to people making fun of the collar is "You mean like THIS!"

I like the fact that the superhero trend is turning toward actual accurate costumes.  Finally.

I don't know that it's so much bigger, as it is less folded in that set photo. Still, as anyone who watches Sherlock knows, Cumberbatch looks really good in a high collar anyway.

Yeah, all the images I'm seeing look absolutely perfect, other than Mordo.  His costume looks more or less fitting, though.  Cumberbatch just looks like he stepped off of a comic cover.  I have to say, I'm excited about this!  Did y'all see the pictures of him buying Dr. Strange comics?  That's just awesome.

I love the dedication to getting it 'right' that he displays in that interview.  That's what leads to Marvel's success!  :D

Cumberbatch is just going to be perfect in this role.  This has got to be the best casting since they got Downey for Iron Man.

Agreed.  I think in some ways Marvel/Disney are prepping Cumberbatch as a star replacement for Downey Jr. when he inevitably leaves the films.  Like Downey Jr before him, Cumberbatch is significantly more famous already than most Marvel leads were to begin with, he's someone with serious acting chops, and he's playing a character known for his arrogant jerkish ways.  And he looks amazing in costume here!

The Doctor Strange teaser trailer is in the wild.  Doesn't show too much--mostly setup for the uninitiated--but it definitely has a different look.

So I just watched the trailer, and I quite liked it. It really gives me an Inception vibe, though that might be a good thing, since I really liked Inception.

Edited because I'm a space case...Tilda Swinton is not sitting well as the Ancient One for me.  Why not cast an older Asian actor?  They don't get many roles as it is.

I completely understand your reaction, Dana, but my guess is that they are trying to avoid the cliche of 'old asian guy teaching martial arts.'  Sadly, they're doing so by changing the race of an character who is actually asian, but at least Swinton looks weird enough as to seem otherworldly. :P
