I'm sorry to hear that you're having computer issues. I'm always available to help out if you need someone to check out your skopes if you're working on anything new.

Did you lose all of your content or just the ability to access it? If you've lost stuff or maybe need a mesh to use a piece for a skope, hit me up and I'll see if I have it.

I lost a ton of stuff on a hard drive crash a couple of years ago. Instead of HDs, I either do backup disks as always, or for data I want to be changing or editing, I put works in progress on sd cards. A little slower, but small and compact and no moving parts to fail. So far not one problem. And if the computer were to die, I can just pop it out and put the card in a different computer, and off I go.

A 32 gig SD card right now is under $20, so its not as big as a hit in the wallet all at once either

I can't believe I hadn't commented on this yet!  I'm glad you're back with us, CB, as I've said to you already.  FR isn't the same without you, man.

I've been using Carbonite online storage, and I rather like that.  It's saved me tons of heartache over the last five years or so.  It's like $50 bucks for a year's subscription, which seems pretty fair.

That really sucks to hear, Cyber. At least you have a little bit of your files backed-up.

If there is anything that you're missing, I'd be glad to see if I have a copy and send it to you.

I hope you're able to get everything fixed soon, though.  I definitely know how much it stinks when your HDD dies and your computer refuses to work.

Ouch. Most families come with, ahem, baggage, but at the end of the day, still provide support, respect and comfort. It must be pretty awful if you're contemplating leaving behind so much. I do hope the relationship with your family improves sooner rather than later.

For years my family treated most everybody better than me. I just waited them out.

Sometimes, though, it was a near thing.

I've always been very grateful for my in-laws.  They are crazy, but they are good people, and they've always treated me well.  I just wish my wife were so lucky...

My family is crazy, and while they've always treated Lady Grey well, their madness is of a less benevolent sort.

When it comes to family, it really amuses me how quickly they forget what they post on Facebook.

It's not ok to lie to my face about something especially when they have posted something contradictory on their timeline/wall/whatever.

It's even worse when they post pictures of the family gathering that "Never occurred".

It seriously breaks my heart when my daughter sees these pictures and I can't answer her question of "Why wasn't I invited?".

I avoid Facebook when she's around because of this, but once in a while, she'll sneak up behind me when she can't sleep.

And this is a big part of why I am willing to walk away from everything and start over.

That is just terrible, Cyber.  I am sincerely sorry to hear that they would do something like that to you.

I am in agreement with you of starting over if that means that you can get away from this terrible treatment.  Do what you need to do to find yourself some happiness. You really deserve to be happy based on how willing to help and how kind you have been to the many members on this forum. Seriously, based on even the small discussions that I've had the pleasure of having with you, you're a really nice guy and completely undeserving of crap like this. It pains me so much when such kind and generous people get stepped on and lied to.

But, as odd as this sounds, and as tough as it is, just remember to always keep your family in your prayers. This sounds very strange; I know.  They do something as terrible as this to you and you should show them kindness? It's not the typical response, but please do not treat them the way that they treat you.  Hatred only ever breeds more hatred.  They're still your family, and even if one thinks that they are undeserving of any sort of compassion (which I can completely understand why), I still believe in wishing everybody the best.

If you have an older version of Word which doesn't export to PDF, IIRC, you can use the free (as in beer) Ghostscript as a printer driver. Another solution would be to open the document using the free (as in freedom) Libre Office or Open Office.

(Geek note: ...Or you can use a Mac, whose display technology is based on PDF, giving out-of-the-box PDF export to every app.)

Post by: Panther_Gunn on December 11, 2013, 05:25:03 AM
There's also a few other free pdf programs that you can export a file as a pdf, such as CutePDF, which installs itself as an available printer that you can "print" to, and it outputs the file as a pdf.  Not sure if it's ever editable with a full version of Acrobat or some other program, though.

Well at least it didn't blow up...last comp I had that gave up literally blew up...well actually the hard drive blew up but it took out a good chunk of the motherboard and left some flaming bits near the dvd player...was really quite fun to watch if it weren't for the fact it meant a new build needed.

I Just screwed up the install of my FF by trying to put in some maps and messing up my dats. This gave me the chance though to reinstall on a 32gig SD card. Now I have FF, maps, ffxs, mods and all the characters in one place. If the computer should happen to die, they should be safe.

I had tried doing the same a couple of years ago on a USB HD, but it died and took everything with it. Hopefully the SD card is safer with no moving parts in it. I still have my backup dvds and the stuff I made in my yahoo groups as well just in case.

Yeah, I no longer have faith in them either... especially dealing with a laptop for 4 years, external hard drives really only lasted 6 months to a year before needing replacement. I've got my laptop hard drive hooked up as an external at the moment, but all the important stuff is saved to my main computer and I only use it because I haven't bothered to move stuff over.

All I can say is thank you, the support and friendship that I've received from the community over the years has always been appreciated. I have always been grateful that I've had FR to escape to.

I've been burned out before.. I started feeling it lately after the Serpent Society.. until I read the Suicide Squad by Ostrander all over again.

But I think after the Suicide Squad and a few other things I've promised, I'm going back into burn out mode for a little while.

I'm right there with you TUE, between family, work, and classes, life just feels routine, and sometimes pointless. It's the same thing, day in and day out. I'm getting to the point where I'm just dreading the next day. I really need a change, an exit from the slump that I've fallen into.
Title: Re: Anyone else feeling it?

TUE & Cyber, I'm feeling the exact same way that you are. I'm, essentially, burned out on life in general and am frustrated that I don't have the time or desire to do one of the few things that always took my mind off of stuff and provided an escape from RL garbage.

Jup. Sorry to hear you and any of you are ailing. Seems the time of year, state of world affairs and time's arrow are making an abrasive grind on most folks. For me those stressors make me work on FF stuff more though, as well as you already know a lack of outlets until spring here. Hey, you and anyone else: Do what you need to when you do, there's never any fault in that.
If it helps your inner reserves (whoa, a  :ff: pun!!! ) your work is a great inspiration to mine and I'm like a kid on Xmas when you release new FX especially. I download and use almost every one you make.

Ahh, I'm sorry guys!  I know the feeling, though I'm not currently there.  It sounds like y'all need a change.  That doesn't necessarily have to be huge, a new career or the like, but perhaps just something small, or a number of small things.  Try breaking your routine, getting out and walking around in nature for a bit.  Watch the sunset, listen to a river, or perhaps find some live music.  Break the monotony.  It won't fix everything, but something like that can feel like a breath of air after you've been underwater a bit too long and your lungs are starting to burn.  I'm very sorry to hear that y'all are so discouraged, and we'll keep y'all in our prayers.

I'm feeling it as well. Sometimes you feel in the mood to create, and thats sinking to a low point. Luckily, though my drive for modding in FF is taking a dive I'm picking up steam back in Neverwinter again.

Other days I'm in the mood to play. I just installed King's Bounty the Legend and Heroes of MM 5 that have been sitting around for a while. A lot prettier than Heroes 3, but not sure it packs the same punch

And then there's the days I just feel being a vegatable in front of the TV. I just finished watching season 1 of Gilligan (for some reason I found Ginger really annoying this time) and I'm half way through season two of Wild, Wild West and season 3 of Get Smart. also checking out some of the new things like Resurection and maybe "the 100" when it premieres.

I'm with you there Random, with motivation to create for FF at a low point, I've been watching a bit more TV. I've enjoyed the first couple of episodes of "Resurrection". I recorded "Believe", but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

I've got a handful of Skopes that are currently in progress, but just haven't had the energy to finish them yet.

Unfortunately, the Credentialing Program that I am in mandates that I stay where I am, so moving is currently not an option. If I don't finish the program, for any reason, I automatically default on my loans and have to pay every cent back in a ridiculously short amount of time. This is part of the reason that I have been feeling trapped, and is also a big part of my burned out feelings.
Title: Re: Anyone else feeling it?
Post by: BentonGrey on March 19, 2014, 04:37:15 PM
I know that feeling, to a degree, CB.  You've got to find ways to feel free within the confines of your situation, and it isn't easy to do.  I was stuck in IL because my wife was in her degree program, and it wasn't like we could just pick up and leave until she was finished.  We were both miserable there, but we were too far in to turn back.  We had too much invested, both in terms of time and money.  We started escaping on the weekends to a state park a couple hour drive away.  IL was hideous, but that place was beautiful, and we felt like we were getting away for a little while.

Of course, FF is always an escape of mine too, though I sometimes have to fight through ennui to get back into it (and sometimes I can't).  I have been dragging on my Pulp mod for months now, not making any progress.  Last night I decided to approach it from a different direction.  I've just been writing, not playing it, so I decided to play through the mod for a change of pace.  I had a blast, and I find that I'm interested in the project and characters again.

Obviously, what worked for me isn't necessarily going to work for anyone else, but nothing lasts forever, and if you can find a way to soldier on in the interim, hopefully something better is on the horizon.

Well, the Class I've been taking recently finished, so I have a week or two until I start up again. I'll admit that I'm still feeling pretty burnt out with life in general, but at least I've gotten back to Skoping some of the projects I've had on hold for a while. Barring any problems, I'm hoping to get at least a few knocked out before I go back to School.

I had a blast, and I find that I'm interested in the project and characters again

I'm glad to hear that the Pulp Mod is being worked on again, I always enjoy running through your Mods.

Me too!  I've got spring break this week, and I'm hoping to make some major progress!

I'm glad you've got some time off.  Get some rest, and I hope you'll go back refreshed.

I am going to apologize in advance, I have fallen a bit behind on my Skopes. I am scheduled to move back into my house this weekend, but I still have to finish with this quarter as well, so I am coming down to the wire.

I know that I have started a few projects for people, they are still heavy WIP's, but I haven't forgotten about them. Since I will pretty much be living out of boxes for the next few weeks (At least), I'm expecting a few weeks before I get back into Skoping.

If anyone wants/needs these Skopes sooner, I won't be offended if you ask someone else, otherwise, I will happily resume work when I am able.

Again, I apologize for falling a bit behind.

You don't need to apologize CB. Everyone knows that life outside modding makes it's demands. As well you've done more than enough already for anyone just in addition to being a really nice person here. G'luck with everything and always looking forward to your releases when they come.

Much appreciated guys, I always feel bad not being able to keep a commitment in a timely matter. After next week, I should have a bit more free time to catch up.

I hate to admit it DJ, but you are very much appreciated. You're older Skins (AOA, DC, Etc.) are still some of my favorite. I always loved the style they were skinned in, and their colors were extremely vibrant.

And the Nazis that you an Carravaggio were doing were very inspiring.
